Actes 21
1 Après nous être arrachés à leurs embrassements, nous mîmes à la voile et nous allâmes droit à Cos; le lendemain nous atteignîmes Rhodes, puis Patare.
And it came to pass, after we had torn ourselves from them, and had put to sea, that we came with a straight course to Cos, and the day following to Rhodes, and from thence to Patara.
2 Là, ayant trouvé un vaisseau qui faisait la traversée vers la Phénicie, nous y montâmes et partîmes.
And finding a ship crossing over to Phenicia, we went aboard, and put to sea.
3 Arrivés en vue de Chypre, nous laissâmes l’île à gauche, nous dirigeant vers la Syrie, et nous abordâmes à Tyr, où le navire devait déposer sa cargaison.
And having come in sight of Cyprus, we passed it on the left, and sailed to Syria, and landed at Tyre; for there the ship was to unlade her cargo.
4 Nous trouvâmes les disciples, et nous restâmes là sept jours; et ils disaient à Paul, par l’Esprit de Dieu, de ne pas monter à Jérusalem.
And having found out the disciples, we remained there seven days; and they told Paul, through the Spirit, not to go up to Jerusalem.
5 Mais au bout de sept jours, nous nous acheminâmes pour partir, et tous, avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants, nous accompagnèrent jusqu’en dehors de la ville. Nous nous mîmes à genoux sur le rivage pour prier;
And when we had completed the days, we departed, and went our way, they all accompanying us, with wives and children, till we were out of the city; and having kneeled down on the shore and prayed,
6 puis, après nous être dit adieu, nous montâmes sur le vaisseau, tandis qu’ils retournèrent chez eux.
we took leave of each other, and went on board the ship; and they returned home.
7 Pour nous, achevant notre navigation, nous allâmes de Tyr à Ptolémaïs, et ayant salué les frères, nous passâmes un jour avec eux.
But we, finishing our voyage, came down from Tyre to Ptolemais; and having embraced the brethren, remained with them one day.
8 Nous partîmes le lendemain et nous arrivâmes à Césarée. Etant entrés dans la maison de Philippe l’évangéliste, l’un des sept, nous logeâmes chez lui.
And on the morrow we departed, and came to Caesarea; and entering the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, we stayed with him.
9 Il avait quatre filles vierges, qui prophétisaient.
And this man had four daughters, virgins, who prophesied.
10 Comme nous étions dans cette ville depuis quelques jours, il arriva de Judée un prophète nommé Agabus.
And while we were staying some days longer, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus;
11 Etant venu vers nous, il prit la ceinture de Paul, se lia les pieds et les mains et dit: « Voici ce que déclare l’Esprit-Saint: L’homme à qui appartient cette ceinture sera ainsi lié à Jérusalem par les Juifs et livré aux mains des Gentils. »
and coming to us, he took off Paul's girdle, and bound his own feet and hands, and said, Thus saith the Holy Spirit: So will the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and will deliver him into the hands of the gentiles.
12 Ayant entendu ces paroles, nous et les fidèles de Césarée, nous conjurâmes Paul de ne pas monter à Jérusalem.
But when we heard this, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go to Jerusalem.
13 Alors il répondit: « Que faites-vous de pleurer ainsi et de me briser le cœur? Pour moi, je suis prêt, non seulement à porter les chaînes, mais encore à mourir à Jérusalem pour le nom du Seigneur Jésus. »
Then answered Paul, What mean ye that ye weep, and break my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.
14 Comme il restait inflexible, nous cessâmes nos instances, en disant: « Que la volonté du Seigneur se fasse! »
And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased; saying, The Lord's will be done.
15 Après ces jours-là, ayant achevé nos préparatifs, nous montâmes à Jérusalem.
And after those days we got ready our baggage, and went up to Jerusalem.
16 Des disciples de Césarée vinrent aussi avec nous, emmenant un nommé Mnason, de l’île de Chypre, depuis longtemps disciple, chez qui nous devions loger.
There went with us also some of the disciples of Caesarea, bringing us to one Mnason, a Cyprian, an old disciple, with whom we should lodge.
17 A notre arrivée à Jérusalem, les frères nous reçurent avec joie.
And when we arrived at Jerusalem, the brethren received us gladly.
18 Le lendemain, Paul se rendit avec nous chez Jacques, et tous les Anciens s’y réunirent.
And the day following Paul went in with us to James; and all the elders were present.
19 Après les avoir embrassés, il raconta en détail tout ce que Dieu avait fait parmi les Gentils par son ministère.
And having embraced them, he recounted particularly what things God had wrought among the gentiles through his ministry.
20 Ce qu’ayant entendu, ils glorifièrent Dieu, et dirent à Paul: « Tu vois, frère, combien de milliers de Juifs ont cru, et tous sont zélés pour la Loi.
And they on hearing it glorified God; and said to him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of believers there are among the Jews, and they are all zealots for the Law.
21 Or ils ont entendu dire de toi que tu enseignes aux Juifs dispersés parmi les Gentils de se séparer de Moïse, leur disant de ne pas circoncire leurs enfants et de ne pas se conformer aux coutumes.
But they have been informed concerning thee, that thou teachest all the Jews who are among the gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children, nor to walk after the customs.
22 Que faire donc? Sans aucun doute, on se rassemblera en foule, car on va savoir ton arrivée.
What then is to be done? The multitude will necessarily come together; for they will hear that thou hast come.
23 Fais donc ce que nous allons te dire. Nous avons ici quatre hommes qui ont fait un vœu;
Do this therefore that we advise thee. We have four men who have a vow on them.
24 prends-les, purifie-toi avec eux, et fais pour eux les frais des sacrifices, afin qu’ils se rasent la tête. Ainsi tous sauront que les rapports faits sur ton compte sont sans valeur, et que toi aussi tu observes la Loi.
These take, and purify thyself with them, and pay the expenses for them, that they may shave their heads; and all will know that those things of which they have been informed concerning thee are nothing, but that thou thyself also walkest in observance of the Law.
25 Quant aux Gentils qui ont cru, nous leur avons écrit après avoir décidé [qu’ils n’ont rien de pareil à observer, sauf] qu’ils doivent s’abstenir des viandes offertes aux idoles, du sang, des animaux étouffés et de la fornication. »
But concerning the gentile believers, we have written to them and decided that they should observe no such thing, save only to abstain from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from what hath been strangled, and from fornication.
26 Alors Paul prit avec lui ces hommes, et après s’être purifié, il entra le lendemain avec eux dans le temple, pour annoncer que les jours du naziréat étaient expirés, et il y vint jusqu’à ce que le sacrifice eût été offert pour chacun d’eux.
Then Paul took the men, and the next day having purified himself with them, entered the temple, announcing the completion of the days of the purification, until the offering was made for every one of them.
27 Comme les sept jours touchaient à leur fin, les Juifs d’Asie, ayant vu Paul dans le temple, soulevèrent toute la foule et mirent la main sur lui, en criant:
And when the seven days were almost ended, the Jews from Asia, having seen him in the temple, stirred up the whole multitude, and laid hands on him,
28 « Enfants d’Israël, au secours! Voici l’homme qui prêche partout et à tout le monde contre le peuple, contre la Loi et contre ce lieu; il a même introduit des païens dans le temple et a profané ce saint lieu. »
crying out, Men of Israel, help! This is the man that teacheth every one everywhere against the people, and the Law, and this place; and besides he even brought Greeks into the temple, and hath polluted this holy place.
29 Car ils avaient vu auparavant Trophime d’Ephèse avec lui dans la ville, et ils croyaient que Paul l’avait fait entrer dans le temple.
For they had before seen with him in the city Trophimus, the Ephesian, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.
30 Aussitôt toute la ville fut en émoi, et le peuple accourut de toute part; on se saisit de Paul et on l’entraîna hors du temple, dont les portes furent immédiatement fermées.
And the whole city was in motion, and the people ran together; and they laid hold of Paul and dragged him out of the temple; and forthwith the doors were shut.
31 Pendant qu’ils cherchaient à le tuer, la nouvelle arriva au tribun de la cohorte que tout Jérusalem était en confusion.
And while they were endeavoring to kill him, tidings came up to the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in an uproar;
32 Il prit à l’instant des soldats et des centurions, et accourut à eux. A la vue du tribun et des soldats, ils cessèrent de frapper Paul.
who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down to them. And seeing the chief captain and the soldiers, they left off beating Paul.
33 Alors le tribun s’approchant, se saisit de lui et le fit lier de deux chaînes; puis il demanda qui il était et ce qu’il avait fait.
Then the chief captain came near and laid hold of him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and inquired who he was, and what he had done.
34 Mais, dans cette foule, les uns criaient une chose, les autres une autre. Ne pouvant donc rien apprendre de certain, à cause du tumulte, il ordonna de l’emmener dans la forteresse.
And some cried one thing, and some another, among the multitude. And not being able to gain certain knowledge on account of the uproar, he ordered him to be carried into the castle.
35 Lorsque Paul fut sur les degrés, il dut être porté par les soldats, à cause de la violence de la multitude.
And when he reached the stairs, he was obliged to be borne by the soldiers, on account of the violence of the crowd;
36 Car le peuple suivait en foule en criant: « Fais-le mourir. »
for the multitude of the people were following, crying out, Away with him!
37 Au moment d’être introduit dans la forteresse, Paul dit au tribun: « M’est-il permis de te dire quelque chose? » — « Tu sais le grec? répondit le tribun.
And as he was about to be led into the castle, Paul saith to the chief captain, May I speak to thee? And he said, Canst thou speak Greek?
38 Tu n’es donc pas l’Egyptien qui s’est révolté dernièrement et qui a emmené au désert quatre mille sicaires? »
Art thou not then the Egyptian, who before these days made an insurrection, and led out into the wilderness those four thousand men of the assassins?
39 Paul lui dit: « Je suis Juif, de Tarse en Cilicie, citoyen d’une ville qui n’est pas sans renom. Je t’en prie, permets-moi de parler au peuple. »
But Paul said, I am a Jew of Tarsus, a citizen of no mean city of Cilicia; and I beseech thee, suffer me to speak to the people.
40 Le tribun le lui ayant permis, Paul debout sur les degrés, fit signe de la main au peuple. Un profond silence s’établit, et Paul, s’exprimant en langue hébraïque, leur parla ainsi:
And when he had given him leave, Paul stood on the stairs, and beckoned with his hand to the people, and there was a great silence; and he spoke to them in the Hebrew tongue, saying,
