1 L’Ancien, à Gaïus, le bien-aimé que j’aime en vérité.

The elder to Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth.

2 Bien-aimé, sur toutes choses je souhaite [que l’état de] tes affaires et de ta santé soit aussi prospère [que celui] de ton âme.

Beloved, in all things I pray that thou mayst prosper and be in health, as thy soul prospereth.

3 J’ai eu bien de la joie, lorsque des frères sont arrivés et ont rendu témoignage de ta vérité, [je veux dire] de la manière dont tu marches dans la vérité.

For I rejoiced greatly, when brethren came and bore witness to thy truth, as thou walkest in truth.

4 Je n’ai pas de plus grande joie que d’apprendre [que] mes enfants marchent dans la vérité.

I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my children walk in the truth.

5 Bien-aimé, tu agis fidèlement dans tout ce que tu fais pour les frères, et particulièrement pour des [frères] étrangers;

Beloved, thou doest a faithful thing whatever thou doest to the brethren, and that to strangers,

6 aussi ont-ils rendu témoignage de ta charité en présence de l’Église. Tu feras bien de pourvoir à leur voyage d’une manière digne de Dieu;

who bore witness of thy love before the church; whom if thou send forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, thou wilt do well.

7 car [c’est] pour le nom qu’ils sont partis, sans rien recevoir des païens.

For in behalf of the Name they went forth, taking nothing of the gentiles.

8 Nous devons soutenir de tels [hommes], afin de travailler avec eux pour la vérité.

We therefore ought to sustain such persons, that we may be fellow-workers for the truth.

9 J’ai écrit à l’Église; mais Diotréphès, qui aime être le premier parmi eux, ne nous reçoit pas.

I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the pre-eminence among them, receiveth us not.

10 C’est pourquoi, si je viens, je lui rappellerai les œuvres qu’il fait, et les méchants propos qu’il tient contre nous. Et non content de cela, il refuse lui-même d’accueillir les frères, et il empêche ceux qui voudraient les recevoir et les chasse de l’Église.

Wherefore, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words; and not content therewith, he himself doth not receive the brethren, and those that would he forbiddeth, and casteth them out of the church.

11 Bien-aimé, n’imite pas le mal, mais [imite] le bien. Celui qui fait le bien est de Dieu; celui qui fait le mal n’a pas vu Dieu.

Beloved, do not imitate that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God; he that doeth evil hath not seen God.

12 Tout le monde, et la vérité elle-même, rendent un bon témoignage à Démétrius; nous le [lui] rendons aussi, et tu sais que notre témoignage est vrai.

To Demetrius testimony hath been borne by all, and by the truth itself; yea, we also bear witness, and ye know that our witness is true.

13 J’aurais beaucoup de choses à t’écrire, mais je ne veux pas [le faire] avec l’encre et la plume:

I had many things to write to thee, but I do not wish to write to thee with ink and pen;

14 j’espère te voir bientôt, et nous nous entretiendrons de vive voix. La paix [soit] avec toi! Les amis te saluent. Salue les amis, chacun en particulier.

but I hope to see thee immediately, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. The friends salute thee. Salute the friends by name.
