2 Samuel 20

1 Il se trouvait là un homme de Bélial, nommé Séba, fils de Bochri, Benjamite; il sonna de la trompette et dit: « Nous n’avons pas de part avec David, nous n’avons pas d’héritage avec les fils de Jessé. Chacun à ses tentes, Israël! »

There also happened to be at the same place a troublemaker whose name was Sheba son of Bikri, a Benjamite. He blew the trumpet and said, “We have no part in David, neither have we any inheritance in the son of Jesse. Let every man go back to his home, Israel.”

2 Et tous les hommes d’Israël s’éloignèrent de David et suivirent Séba, fils de Bochri. Mais les hommes de Juda s’attachèrent à leur roi, depuis le Jourdain jusqu’à Jérusalem.

So all the men of Israel deserted David and followed Sheba son of Bikri. But the men of Judah followed closely their king, from the Jordan all the way to Jerusalem.

3 David revint dans sa maison, à Jérusalem, et le roi prit les dix concubines qu’il avait laissées pour veiller sur la maison, et les mit dans une maison gardée. Il pourvut à leur entretien, mais il n’alla plus vers elles; et elles furent enfermées jusqu’au jour de leur mort, vivant ainsi dans l’état de veuvage.

When David came to his palace at Jerusalem, he took the ten slave wives whom he had left to keep the palace, and he put them in a house under guard. He provided for their needs, but he did not sleep with them any longer. So they were shut up to the day of their death, living as if they were widows.

4 Le roi dit à Amasa: « Convoque-moi d’ici à trois jours les hommes de Juda; et toi, sois ici présent. »

Then the king said to Amasa, “Call the men of Judah together within three days; you must be here, too.”

5 Amasa partit pour convoquer Juda; mais il tarda au-delà du temps que le roi avait fixé.

So Amasa went to call Judah, but he was delayed beyond the time that the king had allotted for him.

6 Alors David dit à Abisaï: « Séba, fils de Bochri, va maintenant nous faire plus de mal qu’Absalom. Toi donc, prends les serviteurs de ton maître et poursuis-le, de peur qu’il ne trouve des villes fortes et ne se dérobe à nos yeux. »

So David said to Abishai, “Now Sheba son of Bikri will do us more harm than Absalom did. Take your master's servants, my soldiers, and pursue after him, or he will find fortified cities and escape out of our sight.”

7 Derrière Abisaï partirent les gens de Joab, les Céréthiens et les Phéléthiens, et tous les vaillants hommes; ils sortirent de Jérusalem afin de poursuivre Séba, fils de Bochri.

Then Joab's men went out after him, along with the Kerethites and the Pelethites and all the mighty warriors. They left Jerusalem to pursue Sheba son of Bikri.

8 Lorsqu’ils furent près de la grande pierre qui est à Gabaon, Amasa arriva devant eux. Joab avait pour vêtement une tunique militaire, et sur cette tunique était ceinte une épée attachée à ses reins dans son fourreau. Comme il s’avançait, l’épée tomba.

When they were at the great stone which is at Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Joab was wearing the battle armor that he had put on, which included a belt around his waist with a sheathed sword fastened to it. As he walked forward, the sword fell out.

9 Et Joab dit à Amasa: « Te portes-tu bien, mon frère? » Et la main droite de Joab saisit la barbe d’Amasa pour le baiser.

So Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my cousin?” Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.

10 Amasa ne prit pas garde à l’épée qui était dans la main de Joab; et Joab l’en frappa au ventre et répandit ses entrailles à terre et, sans qu’on lui portât un second coup, Amasa mourut. Joab et son frère Abisaï se mirent à la poursuite de Séba, fils de Bochri.

Amasa did not notice the dagger that was in Joab's left hand. Joab stabbed Amasa in the stomach and his bowels spilled out to the ground. Joab did not strike him again, and Amasa died. So Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba son of Bikri.

11 Mais un des jeunes hommes de Joab resta près d’Amasa, et il disait: « Qui est favorable à Joab, et qui est pour David, qu’il suive Joab! »

Then one of Joab's men stood by Amasa, and the man said, “He who favors Joab, and he who is for David, let him follow Joab.”

12 Or Amasa s’était roulé dans son sang, au milieu de la route. Cet homme, voyant que tout le peuple s’arrêtait, tira Amasa hors de la route dans un champ, et jeta sur lui un manteau, parce qu’il voyait que tous ceux qui arrivaient près de lui s’arrêtaient.

Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the middle of the road. When the man saw that all the people stood still, he carried Amasa off of the road and into a field. He threw a garment over him because he saw that everyone who came by him stood still.

13 Lorsqu’il fut ôté de la route, chacun passa après Joab, à la poursuite de Séba, fils de Bochri.

After Amasa was taken off the road, all the men followed on after Joab in pursuit of Sheba son of Bikri.

14 Joab traversa toutes les tribus d’Israël jusqu’à Abel et Beth-Maacha, et tous les hommes d’élite se rassemblèrent et le suivirent.

Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel of Beth Maacah, and through all the land of the Bikrites, who gathered together and also pursued Sheba.

15 Ils vinrent assiéger Séba dans Abel-Beth-Maacha, et ils élevèrent contre la ville une terrasse, qui atteignait le rempart; et tout le peuple qui était avec Joab s’efforçait à faire tomber la muraille.

They caught up with him and besieged him in Abel of Beth Maacah. They built up a siege ramp against the city against the wall. All the army who were with Joab battered the wall to knock it down.

16 Alors une femme avisée se mit à crier de la ville: « Ecoutez, écoutez, je vous prie! Dites à Joab: Approche jusqu’ici, je veux te parler. »

Then a wise woman cried out of the city, “Listen, please listen, Joab! Come near me so I may speak with you.”

17 Il s’approcha d’elle et la femme dit: « Es-tu Joab? » Il répondit: « C’est moi. » Et elle lui dit: « Ecoute les paroles de ta servante. » Il répondit: « J’écoute. »

So Joab came near to her, and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” He answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Listen to the words of your servant.” He answered, “I am listening.”

18 Et elle dit: « Autrefois on avait coutume de dire: Que l’on consulte Abel, — et tout s’arrangeait ainsi.

Then she spoke, “They used to say in old times, 'Surely seek advice at Abel,' and that advice would end the matter.

19 Je suis une des villes paisibles et fidèles en Israël; toi, tu cherches à détruire une ville qui est une mère en Israël! Pourquoi détruirais-tu l’héritage de Yahweh! »

We are a city that is one of the most peaceful and faithful in Israel. You are trying to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why do you want to swallow up the inheritance of Yahweh?”

20 Joab répondit: « Loin, bien loin de moi! Je ne veux ni détruire ni ruiner?

So Joab answered and said, “Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy.

21 La chose n’est pas ainsi. Mais un homme de la montagne d’Ephraïm, nommé Séba, fils de Bochri, a levé sa main contre le roi David; livrez-le, lui seul, et je m’éloignerai de la ville. » La femme dit à Joab: « Voici que sa tête te sera jetée par-dessus la muraille. »

That is not true. But a man from the hill country of Ephraim, named Sheba son of Bikri, has lifted up his hand against the king, against David. Give up him alone, and I will withdraw from the city.” The woman said to Joab, “His head will be thrown to you over the wall.”

22 La femme alla vers tout le peuple et lui parla sagement; et ils coupèrent la tête à Séba, fils de Bochri, et la jetèrent à Joab. Joab fit sonner de la trompette, et l’on se dispersa loin de la ville, chacun vers ses tentes; et Joab retourna à Jérusalem vers le roi.

Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. They cut off the head of Sheba son of Bikri, and threw it out to Joab. Then he blew the trumpet and Joab's men left the city, every man to his home. Then Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

23 Joab commandait toute l’armée d’Israël; Banaïas, fils de Joïada, commandait les Céréthiens et les Phéléthiens;

Now Joab was over all the army of Israel, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and over the Pelethites.

24 Aduram était préposé aux corvées; Josaphat, fils d’Ahilud, était archiviste; Siva était secrétaire;

Adoniram was over the men who did forced labor, and Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the recorder.

25 Sadoc et Abiathar étaient prêtres,

Sheva was scribe and Zadok and Abiathar were priests.

26 et Ira le Jaïrite était aussi conseiller intime de David.

Ira the Jairite was chief minister to David.
