2 Samuel 19
1 On vint dire à Joab: « Voici que le roi pleure et se lamente sur son fils. »
Soon Joab was told, “The king is crying and mourning for Absalom.”
2 La victoire, ce jour-là, fut changée en deuil pour tout le peuple, car le peuple entendit dire en ce jour-là: « Le roi est affligé à cause de son fils. »
Victory that day was turned into mourning for the whole army, because they were told, “The king is grieving for his son.”
3 Ce jour-là le peuple entra dans la ville à la dérobée, comme entrent à la dérobée des gens honteux d’avoir fui dans la bataille.
They stole back into town that day like defeated people steal in, ashamed of running away from the battle.
4 Le roi s’était voilé le visage, et le roi criait à haute voix: « Mon fils Absalom! Absalom, mon fils, mon fils! »
The king held his face in his hands and sobbed loudly, “My son Absalom! Absalom, my son, my son!”
5 Joab vint vers le roi chez lui, et dit: « Tu couvres aujourd’hui de confusion la face de tous tes serviteurs qui ont en ce jour sauvé ta vie et la vie de tes fils et de tes filles, et la vie de tes femmes et la vie de tes concubines.
Then Joab went inside and told the king, “Today you have humiliated all your men who have saved your life, and the lives of your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your concubines.
6 Tu aimes ceux qui te haïssent et tu hais ceux qui t’aiment, car tu montres aujourd’hui que chefs et serviteurs ne sont rien pour toi, et je vois aujourd’hui que si Absalom vivait et que nous fussions tous morts en ce jour, cela serait heureux à tes yeux.
You did this by loving those who hate you and hating those who love you. Today you have made it plain that the commanders and the men don't mean anything to you. Today I'm sure that you'd be quite happy if Absalom was alive and all of us were dead!
7 Lève-toi donc, sors et parle selon le cœur de tes serviteurs; car je jure par Yahweh que, si tu ne sors pas, pas un homme ne passera avec toi cette nuit; et ce sera pour toi un mal pire que tous les maux qui te sont arrivés depuis ta jeunesse jusqu’à présent. »
So get up, go out, and thank your men. I swear by the Lord that if you don't, you won't have a man left by tonight. That will be far worse for you than all the disasters you've had from your youth until now.”
8 Alors le roi se leva et il s’assit à la porte. On l’annonça à tout le peuple en disant: « Voici que le roi est assis à la porte. » Et tout le peuple vint devant le roi. Israël s’était enfui chacun dans sa tente.
So the king got up and went to sit at the town gate. Everybody was told: “Look, the king is sitting at the town gate.” They all came to see the king. In the meantime the Israelites had run away and gone to their homes.
9 Tout le peuple, dans toutes les tribus d’Israël, s’accusait, en disant: « Le roi nous a délivrés de la main de nos ennemis; c’est lui qui nous a sauvés de la main des Philistins; et maintenant il a dû fuir du pays devant Absalom.
Everyone among the tribes of Israel were arguing with each other, saying, “The king rescued us from the persecution of our enemies, he saved us from the Philistines, but now he's had to run from the country because of Absalom.
10 Or Absalom, que nous avions oint pour régner sur nous, est mort dans la bataille: pourquoi donc ne parlez-vous pas de faire revenir le roi? »
Now Absalom, the man we chose to be our king by anointing him, he's died in battle. Why don't we do something and invite King David to come back?”
11 Le roi David envoya parler aux prêtres Sadoc et Abiathar en ces termes: « Parlez aux anciens de Juda et dites-leur: Pourquoi seriez-vous les derniers à ramener le roi dans sa maison? — Et ce qui se disait dans tout Israël était parvenu au roi chez lui. —
King David sent this message to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests: “Tell the elders of Judah, ‘Are you going to be the last people to bring the king back to his palace, since the king has heard that all of Israel wants it?
12 Vous êtes mes frères, vous êtes mes os et ma chair: pourquoi seriez-vous les derniers à ramener le roi. »
You are my brothers, my own flesh and blood. Why should you be the last ones to want to bring the king back?’
13 Vous direz aussi à Amasa: « N’es-tu pas mon os et ma chair? Que Dieu me traite dans toute sa rigueur, si tu ne deviens pas devant moi pour toujours chef de l’armée à la place de Joab! »
Tell Amasa, ‘Aren't you my flesh and blood too? May God punish me very severely if from now on you're not the commander of my army instead of Joab!’”
14 Et David fléchit le cœur de tous les hommes de Juda comme d’un seul homme; et ils envoyèrent dire au roi: « Reviens, toi et tous tes serviteurs ».
Amasa convinced all the people of Judah to unitedly support David, so they sent a message to the king: “Please come back, you and everyone with you.”
15 Le roi revint et arriva jusqu’au Jourdain; et Juda se rendit à Galgala pour aller au-devant du roi et faire passer au roi le Jourdain.
The king began his journey back, and when he arrived at the Jordan, the men of Judah met him at Gilgal to help him cross the river.
16 Séméï, fils de Géra, Benjamite, de Bahurim, se hâta de descendre avec les hommes de Juda à la rencontre du roi David.
Shimei, son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim, hurried down with the men of Judah to meet King David.
17 Il avait avec lui mille hommes de Benjamin, et Siba, serviteur de la maison de Saül, et ses quinze fils et ses vingt serviteurs; ils se précipitèrent au Jourdain devant le roi.
With him were one thousand men from the tribe of Benjamin, including Ziba, servant of Saul's family, as well as Ziba's fifteen sons and twenty servants. They rushed down to the Jordan to meet the king.
18 Déjà le bateau qui devait transporter la maison du roi et se mettre à sa disposition, était passé. Séméï, fils de Géra, se jeta aux pieds du roi, au moment où celui-ci allait passer le Jourdain,
They crossed at the ford to bring the king's household over and whatever else he wanted. Shimei crossed the Jordan and fell facedown before the king.
19 et il dit au roi: « Que mon seigneur ne m’impute pas d’iniquité, et ne se souvienne pas de l’offense de ton serviteur, le jour où le roi mon seigneur sortait de Jérusalem, pour y prêter attention, ô roi!
“Your Majesty, please forgive me and disregard the wrong that I, your servant, did when Your Majesty left Jerusalem. Please forget all about it.
20 Car ton serviteur reconnaît que j’ai péché; et voici que je viens aujourd’hui le premier de toute la maison de Joseph pour descendre à la rencontre du roi mon seigneur. »
I, your servant, recognize that I have sinned. But look! Today I'm the first from any of the tribes of Joseph to come down and meet Your Majesty.”
21 Abisaï, fils de Sarvia, prit la parole et dit: « Au contraire, Séméï ne doit-il pas être mis à mort pour avoir maudit l’oint de Yahweh? »
Abishai, son of Zeruiah, said, “Shouldn't Shimei be executed for this, because he cursed the Lord's anointed one?”
22 Mais David dit: « Qu’ai-je à faire avec vous, fils de Sarvia, que vous vous faites aujourd’hui mes adversaires? Un homme serait-il mis à mort en ce jour en Israël? Ne sais-je donc pas que je deviens roi aujourd’hui sur Israël? »
But David replied, “What's that got do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? Do you want to be my enemies today? Is this a day to execute anybody in Israel? Aren't I certain that today I'm the king of Israel once more?”
23 Et le roi dit à Séméï: « Tu ne mourras point »; et le roi le lui jura.
David turned to Shimei and swore an oath to him, “You're not going to die.”
24 Miphiboseth, petit-fils de Saül, descendit aussi à la rencontre du roi. Il n’avait pas lavé ses pieds ni arrangé sa moustache, il n’avait pas lavé ses vêtements depuis le jour où le roi était parti jusqu’au jour où il revenait en paix.
Then Mephibosheth, Saul's grandson, went to meet the king. He had refused to look after his feet or trim his mustache or have his clothes washed from the day the king left until the day of his peaceful return.
25 Lorsqu’il vint de Jérusalem au-devant du roi, le roi lui dit: « Pourquoi n’es-tu pas venu avec moi, Miphiboseth? »
When he arrived from Jerusalem to meet the king, the king asked him, “Why didn't you come with me, Mephibosheth?”
26 Et il répondit: « Mon seigneur le roi, mon serviteur m’a trompé; car ton serviteur s’était dit: Je ferai seller l’ânesse, je monterai sur elle et j’irai avec le roi! car ton serviteur est boiteux.
Mephibosheth answered, “Your Majesty, my servant Ziba tricked me. I told him, ‘Saddle up my donkey so I can ride her and leave with the king,’ because you know that I'm lame.
27 Et il a calomnié ton serviteur auprès de mon seigneur le roi. Mais mon seigneur le roi est comme un ange de Dieu; fais ce qui te semblera bon.
Ziba has misrepresented me, your servant, to Your Majesty. However, Your Majesty is like an angel of God, so do what you think best.
28 Car toute la maison de mon père n’est faite pour mon seigneur le roi que de gens dignes de mort; et cependant tu as mis ton serviteur au nombre de ceux qui mangent à ta table. Quel droit puis-je encore avoir de crier encore vers le roi? »
All my grandfather's family could only expect death from Your Majesty, but you included me, your servant, among those who eat at your table. So what right do I have to ask the king for anything more?”
29 Le roi lui dit: « Pourquoi tant de paroles? Je l’ai déclaré: toi et Siba, vous partagerez les terres. »
“Why talk any more about these issues of yours?” David responded. “I've decided that you and Ziba should divide the land.”
30 Et Miphiboseth dit au roi: « Qu’il prenne même le tout, puisque mon seigneur le roi est rentré en paix dans sa maison. »
Mephibosheth replied to the king, “Let him have it all! I'm just happy that Your Majesty has returned home in peace.”
31 Berzellaï le Galaadite descendit de Rogelim et passa vers le roi au Jourdain pour l’accompagner au fleuve.
Barzillai the Gileadite had also came down from Rogelim to help the king cross the Jordan and to make his way onwards from there.
32 Berzellaï était très vieux, âgé de quatre-vingt ans; il avait fourni des aliments au roi pendant son séjour à Mahanaïm, car c’était un homme fort riche.
Barzillai was very old, eighty years of age, and because he was a very wealthy man, he had provided the king with food while he was staying in Mahanaim.
33 Le roi dit à Berzellaï: « Passe avec moi, je te nourrirai chez moi à Jérusalem. »
The king said to Barzillai, “Cross the Jordan with me, and I will provide for you while you stay with me in Jerusalem.”
34 Mais Berzellaï répondit au roi: « Combien d’années ai-je encore à vivre, pour que je monte avec le roi à Jérusalem?
“How much longer do you think I have to live so I could go to Jerusalem and stay there with the king?” Barzillai replied.
35 Je suis aujourd’hui âgé de quatre-vingt ans. Puis-je distinguer ce qui est bon de ce qui est mauvais? Ton serviteur peut-il savourer ce qu’il mange et ce qu’il boit? Puis-je encore entendre la voix des chanteurs et des chanteuses? Et pourquoi ton serviteur serait-il encore à charge à mon seigneur le roi?
“I'm already eighty. I don't enjoy anything anymore. I can't taste what I eat or drink. I can't hear when people sing. There's no point for me, your servant, to be another burden to Your Majesty!
36 Ton serviteur passera un peu au delà du Jourdain avec le roi. Et pourquoi le roi m’accorderait-il cette récompense?
For your servant to cross the Jordan River with the king is enough reward for me!
37 Laisse, je t’en prie, ton serviteur s’en retourner, et que je meure dans ma ville, près du sépulcre de mon père et de ma mère. Mais voici ton serviteur Chamaam; qu’il passe avec le roi mon seigneur, et fais pour lui ce que tu trouveras bon. »
Then let your servant go back home, that I may die in my home town near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant, my son Chimham. Let him cross over with Your Majesty, and treat him as you think best.”
38 Le roi dit: « Que Chamaam passe avec moi, et je ferai pour lui tout ce qui te plaira; et tout ce que tu désireras de moi, je te l’accorderai. »
The king replied, “Chimham will cross over with me, and I will treat him as you think best, and I will do for you whatever you want.”
39 Et quand tout le peuple eut passé le Jourdain, le roi le passa aussi, et le roi baisa Berzellaï et le bénit, et celui-ci retourna chez lui.
So everybody crossed the Jordan first, and then the king crossed over. The king kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and then Barzillai went back home.
40 Le roi passa à Galgala, et Chamaam passa avec lui; et tout le peuple de Juda, ainsi que la moitié du peuple d’Israël escortèrent le roi.
Then the king carried on to Gilgal, and Chimham went with him. The whole army of Judah and half the army of Israel accompanied the king.
41 Mais voici que tous les hommes d’Israël vinrent auprès du roi et lui dirent: « Pourquoi nos frères, les hommes de Juda, t’ont-ils enlevé, et ont-ils fait passer le Jourdain au roi, à sa maison et à tous les gens de David avec lui? »
But soon the men of Israel who were there came to the king and asked him, “Why did our brothers, the men of Judah, secretly take Your Majesty away and bring you and your household across the Jordan, together with all your men?”
42 Tous les hommes de Juda répondirent aux hommes d’Israël: « C’est que le roi me tient de plus près; pourquoi te fâches-tu de cela? Avons-nous vécu aux dépens du roi? Ou bien en avons-nous reçu quelque chose? »
The men of Judah explained to the men of Israel, “We did this because the king is one of our relatives. Why are you getting upset about this? When did we ever eat the king's food? When did we ever get anything for yourselves?”
43 Les hommes d’Israël répondirent aux hommes de Juda, en disant: « J’ai dix parts sur le roi, et même David m’appartient plus qu’à toi. Pourquoi m’as-tu fait cette injure? Ma parole n’a-t-elle pas été la première pour rétablir mon roi? Et le langage des hommes de Juda fut plus dur que celui des hommes d’Israël. »
“We've got ten shares in the king,” the men of Israel replied, “so we have a greater claim on David than you do. So why do you look down us? Weren't we the first ones to talk about bringing back our king?” But the men of Judah argued even more strongly than the men of Israel.
