2 Samuel 17

1 Achitophel dit à Absalom: « Laisse-moi choisir douze mille hommes; je me lèverai et je poursuivrai David cette nuit même et,

Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom: 'Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night;

2 tombant sur lui à l’improviste pendant qu’il est fatigué et que ses mains sont affaiblies, je l’épouvanterai, et tout le peuple qui est avec lui s’enfuira; je frapperai alors le roi seul,

and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only;

3 et je ramènerai à toi tout le peuple: l’homme à qui tu en veux vaut le retour de tous; et tout le peuple sera en paix. »

and I will bring back all the people unto thee; when all shall have returned, save the man whom thou seekest, all the people will be in peace.'

4 Ce discours plut à Absalom et à tous les anciens d’Israël.

And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

5 Cependant Absalom dit: « Appelez encore Chusaï l’Arachite et que nous entendions ce que lui aussi a dans la bouche. »

Then said Absalom: 'Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.'

6 Chusaï vint auprès d’Absalom, et Absalom lui dit: « Voici comment a parlé Achitophel; devons-nous faire ce qu’il a dit? Sinon, parle à ton tour. »

And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spoke unto him, saying: 'Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner; shall we do after his saying? if not, speak thou.'

7 Chusaï répondit à Absalom: « Pour cette fois, le conseil qu’a donné Achitophel n’est pas bon. »

And Hushai said unto Absalom: 'The counsel that Ahithophel hath given this time is not good.'

8 Et Chusaï ajouta: « Tu sais que ton père et ses gens sont des braves; ils sont exaspérés comme le serait dans la campagne une ourse privée de ses petits. Ton père est un homme de guerre, et il ne passe pas la nuit avec le peuple.

Hushai said moreover: 'Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are embittered in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field; and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

9 Voici que maintenant il est caché dans quelque ravin ou dans quelque autre lieu. Et si, dès le commencement, il tombe quelques-uns des vôtres, on l’apprendra et l’on dira: Il y a eu une déroute dans le peuple qui suit Absalom.

Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some place; and it will come to pass, when they fall upon them at the first, and whosoever heareth it shall say: There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom;

10 Alors, même le plus vaillant, son cœur fût-il comme un cœur de lion, sera découragé; car tout Israël sait que ton père est un héros, et que ceux qui l’accompagnent sont des braves.

then even he that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, will utterly melt; for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they that are with him are valiant men.

11 Je conseille donc que tout Israël se rassemble auprès de toi, depuis Dan jusqu’à Bersabée, multitude pareille au sable qui est sur le bord de la mer; et tu marcheras en personne au combat.

But I counsel that all Israel be gathered together unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.

12 Nous l’atteindrons en quelque lieu qu’il se trouve, et nous tomberons sur lui comme la rosée tombe sur le sol, et nous ne laisserons échapper ni lui, ni aucun de tous les hommes qui sont avec lui.

So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground; and of him and of all the men that are with him we will not leave so much as one.

13 S’il se retire dans une ville, tout Israël apportera des cordes vers cette ville, et nous la traînerons jusqu’au torrent, jusqu’à ce qu’on n’y trouve plus même une pierre. »

Moreover, if he withdraw himself into a city, then shall all Israel bring up ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the valley until there be not one small stone found there.'

14 Absalom et tous les gens d’Israël dirent: « Le conseil de Chusaï l’Arachite vaut mieux que le conseil d’Achitophel. » Yahweh avait décidé de rendre vain le bon conseil d’Achitophel, afin que Yahweh amenât le malheur sur Absalom.

And Absalom and all the men of Israel said: 'The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.' — For the LORD had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.

15 Chusaï dit aux prêtres Sadoc et Abiathar: « Achitophel a donné tel et tel conseil à Absalom et aux anciens d’Israël, et moi j’ai donné tel et tel conseil.

Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests: 'Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled.

16 Envoyez donc de suite informer David, et faites-lui dire: Ne passe pas la nuit dans les plaines du désert, mais hâte-toi de traverser, de peur qu’il n’y ait un suprême désastre pour le roi et pour tout le peuple qui est avec lui. »

Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying: Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but in any wise pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.'

17 Jonathas et Achimaas se tenaient à En-Rogel; la servante allait les informer, et eux-mêmes allaient donner avis au roi David; car ils ne pouvaient se faire voir en entrant dans la ville.

Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; and a maid-servant used to go and tell them; and they went and told king David; for they might not be seen to come into the city.

18 Un jeune homme les ayant aperçus, il le rapporta à Absalom. Mais ils se hâtèrent tous deux de partir, et ils arrivèrent à Bahurim, dans la maison d’un homme qui avait une citerne dans sa cour, et ils y descendirent.

But a lad saw them, and told Absalom; and they went both of them away quickly, and came to the house of a man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down thither.

19 La femme prit une couverture, qu’elle étendit au dessus de la citerne, et elle y répandit du grain pilé, en sorte qu’on ne remarquait rien.

And the woman took and spread the covering over the well's mouth, and strewed groats thereon; and nothing was known.

20 Les serviteurs d’Absalom entrèrent chez la femme dans la maison, et dirent: « Où sont Achimaas et Jonathas? » La femme leur répondit: « Ils ont passé le ruisseau. » Ils cherchèrent et, ne les trouvant pas, ils retournèrent à Jérusalem.

And Absalom's servants came to the woman to the house; and they said: 'Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?' And the woman said unto them: 'They are gone over the brook of water.' And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.

21 Après leur départ, Achimaas et Jonathas remontèrent de la citerne, et allèrent informer le roi David. Ils dirent à David: « Levez-vous et hâtez-vous de passer l’eau, car Achitophel a donné tel conseil contre vous. »

And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David; and they said unto David: 'Arise ye, and pass quickly over the water; for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you.'

22 David et tout le peuple qui était avec lui, s’étant levés, passèrent le Jourdain; au point du jour, il n’en restait pas un seul qui n’eût passé le Jourdain.

Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over the Jordan; by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over the Jordan.

23 Quand Achitophel vit que son conseil n’était pas suivi, il sella son âne, et se leva pour s’en aller chez lui dans sa ville; puis, après avoir donné ses ordres à sa maison, il s’étrangla, et mourut; et on l’enterra dans le tombeau de son père.

And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and got him home, unto his city, and set his house in order, and strangled himself; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

24 David arriva à Mahanaïm; et Absalom passa le Jourdain, lui et tous les hommes d’Israël avec lui.

When David was come to Mahanaim, Absalom passed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

25 Absalom avait mis à la tête de l’armée Amasa, à la place de Joab; Amasa était fils d’un homme appelé Jéthra, l’Ismaélite, qui était allé vers Abigaïl, fille de Naas, sœur de Sarvia, la mère de Joab.

And Absalom had set Amasa over the host instead of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man, whose name was Ithra the Jesraelite, that went in to Abigal the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab's mother.

26 Ainsi Israël et Absalom campaient dans le pays de Galaad.

And Israel and Absalom pitched in the land of Gilead.

27 Lorsque David fut arrivé à Mahanaïm, Sobi, fils de Naas, de Rabba des fils d’Ammon, Machir, fils d’Ammiel de Lodabar, et Berzellaï, le Galaadite, de Rogelim,

And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,

28 vinrent lui offrir des lits, des plats, des vases de terre, du froment, de l’orge, de la farine, du grain rôti, des fèves, des lentilles, du grain rôti,

brought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and meal, and parched corn, and beans, and lentils, and parched pulse,

29 du miel, du beurre, des brebis et des fromages de vache: ils apportèrent ces choses en nourriture à David et au peuple qui était avec lui, car ils disaient: « Ce peuple a souffert de la faim, de la fatigue et de la soif dans le désert. »

and honey, and curd, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat; for they said: 'The people is hungry, and faint, and thirsty, in the wilderness.'
