1 Joram, fils d’Achab, devint roi d’Israël à Samarie la dix-huitième année de Josaphat, roi de Juda; et il régna douze ans.
Now, Jehoram son of Ahab, began to reign over Israel, in Samaria, in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, —and he reigned twelve years.
2 Il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahweh, non pas toutefois comme son père et sa mère; car il fit disparaître la stèle de Baal, que son père avait faite.
And he did the thing that was wicked in the eyes of Yahweh, only, not like his father, nor like his mother, —but he put away the pillars of Baal which, his father, had made;
3 Mais il s’attacha aux péchés de Jéroboam, fils de Nabat, qui avait fait pécher Israël, et il ne s’en détourna point.
nevertheless, unto the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat which he caused Israel to commit, he did cleave, —he turned not away therefrom
4 Mésa, roi de Moab, possédait des troupeaux, et il payait au roi d’Israël un tribut de cent mille agneaux et de cent mille béliers avec leurs toisons.
Now, Mesha king of Moab, was a sheep-master, —and used to render to the king of Israel, the wool of hundred thousand fat sheep, and of a hundred thousand rams.
5 A la mort d’Achab, le roi de Moab se révolta contre le roi d’Israël.
And it came to pass, when Ahab died, that the king of Moab revolted against the king of Israel.
6 Le roi Joram sortit donc en ce jour-là de Samarie et passa en revue tout Israël.
So King Jehoram went forth, on that day, out of Samaria, and numbered all Israel.
7 S’étant mis en marche, il envoya dire à Josaphat, roi de Juda: « Le roi de Moab s’est révolté contre moi; viendras-tu avec moi attaquer Moab? » Josaphat répondit: « Je monterai; il en sera de moi comme de toi, de mon peuple comme de ton peuple, de mes chevaux comme de tes chevaux. »
And he departed, and sent unto Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying—The king of Moab, hath revolted against me, wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said—I will go up, I am as thou art, my people are as thy people, my horses as thy horses.
8 Et il dit: « Par quel chemin monterons-nous? » Joram répondit: « Par le chemin du désert d’Edom. »
And he said—Which way, then, shall we go up? And he said—The way of the wilderness of Edom.
9 Le roi d’Israël, le roi de Juda et le roi d’Edom partirent. Après une marche de sept jours, il n’y eut pas d’eau pour l’armée et pour les bêtes qui la suivaient.
Then departed the king of Israel, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom, and went round, a journey of seven days, —and there was no water for the host, nor for the cattle that went with them.
10 Alors le roi d’Israël dit: « Hélas! Yahweh a appelé ces trois rois pour les livrer aux mains de Moab! »
Then said the king of Israel—Alas! for Yahweh hath called these three kings, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.
11 Mais Josaphat dit: « N’y a-t-il ici aucun prophète de Yahweh, par qui nous puissions consulter Yahweh? » Un des serviteurs du roi d’Israël répondit et dit: « Il y a ici Elisée, fils de Saphat, qui versait l’eau sur les mains d’Elie. »
So Jehoshaphat said—Is there not, here, a prophet of Yahweh, that we may enquire of Yahweh, from him? Then answered one of the servants of the king of Israel, and said, Here, is Elisha son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.
12 Et Josaphat dit: « La parole de Yahweh est avec lui. » Le roi d’Israël, Josaphat, roi de Juda, et le roi d’Edom descendirent auprès de lui.
Then said Jehoshaphat, The word of Yahweh, is with him. So the king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat, and the king of Edom, went down unto him.
13 Elisée dit au roi d’Israël: « Que me veux-tu, toi? Va vers les prophètes de ton père et vers les prophètes de ta mère. » Et le roi d’Israël lui dit: « Non, car Yahweh a appelé ces trois rois pour les livrer entre les mains de Moab. »
And Elisha said unto the king of Israel—What have I and thou in common? get thee unto the prophets of thy father, and unto the prophets of thy mother. But the king of Israel said to him—Nay! for Yahweh hath called together these three kings, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.
14 Elisée dit: « Yahweh des armées, devant qui je me tiens, est vivant! Si je n’avais égard à Josaphat, roi de Juda, je ne ferais aucune attention à toi et je ne te regarderais pas.
Then said Elisha—By the life of Yahweh of hosts, before whom I stand, were it not that, the countenance of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would lift up, I would neither look at thee, nor see thee.
15 Maintenant, amenez-moi un joueur de harpe. » Et pendant que le joueur de harpe jouait, la main de Yahweh fut sur Elisée;
But, now, bring me one that can touch the strings. For it used to be, when the player touched the strings, then would, the hand of Yahweh, be upon him.
16 et il dit: « Ainsi dit Yahweh: Faites dans cette vallée des fosses et des fosses.
Then said he, Thus, saith Yahweh, Make, in this torrent-bed, pits, pits!
17 Car ainsi dit Yahweh: Vous ne verrez pas de vent et vous ne verrez pas de pluie, et cette vallée se remplira d’eau, et vous boirez, vous, vos troupeaux et vos bêtes de somme.
For, thus, saith Yahweh—Ye shall not see wind, and ye shall not see rain, yet, that torrent-bed, shall be filled with water, —And ye shall drink, ye, and your cattle, and your beasts;
18 Mais cela est peu de chose aux yeux de Yahweh: il livrera Moab entre vos mains.
And, this being a small thing in the eyes of Yahweh, he will deliver Moab into your hand;
19 Vous frapperez toutes les villes fortes et toutes les villes de choix, vous abattrez tous les arbres fruitiers, vous boucherez toutes les sources d’eau, et vous désolerez, en les couvrant de pierres, tous les meilleurs champs. »
And ye shall smite every strong city, and every choice city, and, every goodly tree, shall ye fell, and, all fountains water, shall ye close up, —and, every goodly heritage, shall ye mar with stones.
20 De fait le matin, à l’heure où l’on offre l’oblation, voici que l’eau arriva par le chemin d’Edom, et le pays fut rempli d’eau.
And it came to pass, in the morning, when the offering ascended, that lo! waters, were coming in from the way of Edom, —and the land was filled with the water.
21 Cependant, tous les Moabites ayant appris que les rois montaient pour les attaquer, on convoqua tous les hommes capables de ceindre le baudrier, et même au-delà, et ils se postèrent sur la frontière.
Now, all Moab, had heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, —so they came together, from all who could gird on a girdle and upwards, and took their stand at the border.
22 Ils se levèrent de bon matin et, quand le soleil brilla sur les eaux, les Moabites virent en face d’eux les eaux rouges comme du sang.
And, when they rose early in the morning, the sun, shone forth upon the waters, —and so the Moabites beheld over against them, the waters, red as blood.
23 Ils dirent: « C’est du sang! Les rois sont détruits, ils se sont frappés les uns les autres; et maintenant Moabites, au pillage! »
They said therefore—Blood, —this! Destroyed! The kings have destroyed each other! Yea they have smitten every man his neighbour, —Now, then, to the spoil, O Moab!
24 Et ils s’avancèrent vers le camp d’Israël. Mais les Israélites se levèrent et frappèrent Moab, qui prit la fuite devant eux. Pénétrant dans le pays, ils frappèrent Moab;
And, when they came into the camp of Israel, Israel arose and smote Moab, and they fled from before them, —so they entered thereinto, yea still farther entered Moab;
25 ils détruisirent les villes; chacun jetant sa pierre dans tous les meilleurs champs, ils les en remplirent; ils bouchèrent toutes les sources d’eau, ils abattirent tous les arbres fruitiers, au point que de Qir-Charoseth il ne resta que les pierres; les frondeurs l’avaient entourée et battue.
And, the cities, they pulled down, and, on every goodly heritage, they cast every man his stone, and filled it, and, all fountains of waters, they closed up, and, every goodly tree, they felled, and, though they left the stones thereof in Kir-haraseth, yet the slingers surrounded and smote it.
26 Quand le roi de Moab vit qu’il avait le dessous dans le combat, il prit avec lui sept cents hommes, l’épée nue à la main, pour se frayer un passage jusqu’au roi d’Edom; mais ils ne purent y réussir.
And, when the king of Moab saw that, the battle, prevailed against him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through against the king of Edom, but they could not.
27 Prenant alors son fils premier-né, qui devait régner à sa place, il l’offrit en holocauste sur la muraille. Et une grande indignation s’empara d’Israël; et ils s’éloignèrent du roi de Moab et retournèrent dans leur pays.
So he took his firstborn son who was to have reigned in his stead, and offered him up as an ascending-sacrifice upon the wall. And so it came to pass that there was great indignation against Israel. And they brake up from against him, and returned to their own land.
