1 Amasias devint roi à l’âge de vingt cinq ans, et il régna neuf ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s’appelait Joadan, de Jérusalem.
Amaziah was twenty-five when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for twenty-nine years. His mother's name was Jehoaddan and she came from Jerusalem.
2 Il fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de Yahweh, mais non d’un cœur parfait.
He did what was right in the Lord's sight but not with complete commitment.
3 Lorsque la royauté fut affermie sur lui, il mit à mort ses serviteurs qui avaient tué le roi, son père;
After he had made sure his rule was secure, he executed the officers who had murdered his father the king.
4 mais il ne fit pas mourir leurs fils, selon ce qui est écrit dans la Loi, dans le livre de Moïse, où Yahweh donne ce commandement: « Les pères ne mourront pas pour les enfants, et les enfants ne mourront pas pour les pères; mais chacun mourra pour ses péchés. »
However, he did not kill their sons, as is written in the Law, in the book of Moses, where the Lord commanded: “Fathers must not be executed for their children, and children must not be executed for their fathers. Everyone is to die for their own sin.”
5 Amasias rassembla les hommes de Juda et les organisa d’après les maisons patriarcales, les chefs de milliers et les chefs de centaines, pour tout Juda et Benjamin; il en fit le recensement depuis l’âge de vingt ans et au-dessus, et il trouva trois cent mille hommes d’élite, en état d’aller à la guerre, et de manier la lance et le bouclier.
Then Amaziah called up the people of Judah for military service, and assigned them by families to commanders of thousands and of hundreds. He also took a census of those twenty years of age and older throughout Judah and Benjamin, and found there was 300,000 first-rate fighting men who could use spear and shield.
6 Il prit encore à sa solde, parmi ceux d’Israël, cent mille vaillants hommes pour cent talents d’argent.
He also hired 100,000 battle-ready fighting men from Israel for a hundred talents of silver.
7 Un homme de Dieu vint auprès de lui, en disant: « O roi, qu’une armée d’Israël ne marche pas avec toi, car Yahweh n’est pas avec Israël, avec tous les fils d’Ephraïm.
But a man of God came to him and said, “Your Majesty, don't let this army of Israel join you, for the Lord is not with Israel, with these sons of Ephraim!
8 Mais pars seul, agis, sois vaillant dans le combat, et Dieu ne te laissera pas tomber devant l’ennemi, car Dieu a le pouvoir de secourir et de faire tomber. »
Even if you fight bravely, God will let you stumble and fall before the enemy, for God has the power to help you or let you fall.”
9 Amasias dit à l’homme de Dieu: « Mais que faire à l’égard des cent talents que j’ai donnés à la troupe d’Israël? » L’homme de Dieu répondit: « Yahweh peut te donner beaucoup plus que cela. »
Amaziah asked the man of God, “But what about the hundred talents of silver I paid the army of Israel?” “The Lord can give you much more than that!” replied the man of God.
10 Amasias sépara la troupe qui lui était venue d’Ephraïm, pour qu’elle allât dans son pays. Mais la colère de ces gens s’alluma contre Juda, et ils s’en allèrent dans leur pays enflammés de colère.
So Amaziah dismissed the army he'd hired from Ephraim and sent them home. They became very angry with Judah, and returned home furious.
11 Amasias, rempli de courage, conduisit son peuple; il s’en alla dans la vallée du Sel, et battit dix mille hommes des fils de Séir.
Amaziah then bravely led his army to the Valley of Salt, where they attacked the Edomite army from Seir, and killed ten thousand of them.
12 Les fils de Juda en firent captifs dix mille vivants, et les menèrent au sommet d’un rocher; ils les précipitèrent du sommet du rocher, et tous furent broyés.
The army of Judah also captured another ten thousand, took them to the top of a cliff and threw them off, killing them all.
13 Cependant, les gens de la troupe qu’Amasias avait renvoyés pour qu’ils n’allassent pas à la guerre avec lui, se jetèrent sur les villages de Juda; depuis Samarie jusqu’à Béthoron, y tuèrent trois mille hommes et enlevèrent de nombreuses dépouilles.
But the men of the army Amaziah sent home, refusing to let them go with him to battle, raided the towns of Judah, from Samaria to Beth-horon They killed 3,000 of their inhabitants and took a great deal of plunder.
14 Après qu’Amasias fut revenu de battre les Edomites, il apporta les dieux des fils de Séir et, les ayant établis pour ses dieux, il se prosterna devant eux et leur offrit des parfums.
When Amaziah returned from killing the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the people of Seir and set them up as his own gods, worshiped them, and offered sacrifices to them.
15 La colère de Yahweh s’enflamma contre Amasias, et il envoya vers lui un prophète, qui lui dit: « Pourquoi as-tu honoré les dieux de ce peuple, qui n’ont pu délivrer leur peuple de ta main? »
The Lord became angry with Amaziah and he sent a prophet to him, who said to him, “Why would you worship the gods of a people who couldn't even save their own people from you?”
16 Comme il lui parlait, Amasias lui dit: « Est-ce que nous t’avons fait conseiller du roi? Retire-toi! Pourquoi te frapperait-on? » Le prophète se retira et dit: « Je sais que Dieu a résolu de te détruire, parce que tu as fait cela et que tu n’as pas écouté mon conseil. »
But while he was still speaking, the king said to him, “Have we made you a counselor to the king? Stop right now! Do you want to be struck down?” So the prophet stopped, but said, “I know that God has decided to destroy you, because you have acted like this and have refused to listen to my advice.”
17 Après avoir pris avis, Amasias, roi de Juda, envoya dire à Joas, fils de Joachaz, fils de Jéhu, roi d’Israël: « Viens, et voyons-nous en face! » Et Joas, roi d’Israël, envoya répondre à Amasias, roi de Juda:
Then Amaziah, king of Judah, took advice from his counselors and sent a message to the king of Israel, Jehoash, son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu. “Come and face me in battle,” he challenged.
18 « L’épine qui est au Liban envoya dire au cèdre qui est au Liban: Donne ta fille pour femme à mon fils. Et les bêtes sauvages qui sont au Liban passèrent et foulèrent l’épine.
Joash, king of Israel, replied to Amaziah, king of Judah, “A thistle on Lebanon sent a message to a cedar on Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son for a wife,’ but a wild animal of Lebanon passed by and trampled down the thistle.
19 Tu te dis: Voici que tu as battu les Edomites, et ton cœur te porte à te glorifier. Maintenant, reste chez toi! Pourquoi t’engager dans le malheur, pour tomber, toi et Juda avec toi? »
You're telling yourself how great you are for defeating Edom, boasting about it. But just stay at home. Why should you stir up trouble that will bring you down, and Judah with you?”
20 Mais Amasias ne l’écouta pas car ce fut d’après la volonté de Dieu qu’il fit cette guerre, afin de livrer les hommes de Juda entre les mains de l’ennemi, parce qu’ils avaient honoré les dieux d’Edom.
But Amaziah didn't listen, for God was going to hand him over to his enemies because he had chosen to worship the gods of Edom.
21 Et Joas, roi d’Israël, monta, et ils se virent en face, lui et Amasias, roi de Juda, à Bethsamès, qui est à Juda.
So Joash king of Israel prepared for battle. He and Amaziah, king of Judah, faced one another at Beth-shemesh in Judah.
22 Juda fut battu devant Israël, et chacun s’enfuit dans sa tente.
Judah was defeated by Israel—they all ran away home.
23 Et Joas, roi d’Israël, prit à Bethsamès Amasias, roi de Juda, fils de Joas, fils de Joachaz. Il l’emmena à Jérusalem, et il fit une brèche de quatre cents coudées dans la muraille de Jérusalem, depuis la porte d’Ephraïm jusqu’à la porte de l’angle.
Joash, king of Israel, captured Amaziah, king of Judah, son of Joash, son of Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh. He took him to Jerusalem, and demolished the wall of Jerusalem for 400 cubits, from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate.
24 Il prit tout l’or et l’argent et tous les ustensiles qui se trouvaient dans la maison de Dieu, chez Obédédom, et les trésors de la maison du roi; il prit aussi des otages, et retourna à Samarie.
He carried away all the gold and silver, and all the articles found in God's Temple that had been looked after by Obed-edom and in the treasuries of the king's palace, as well as some hostages, and then returned to Samaria.
25 Amasias, fils de Joas, roi de Juda, vécut quinze ans après la mort de Joas, fils de Joachaz, roi d’Israël.
Amaziah, son of Joash, king of Judah, lived for fifteen years after the death of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel.
26 Le reste des actes, d’Amasias, les premiers et les derniers, cela n’est-il pas écrit dans le livre des rois de Juda et d’Israël?
The rest of what Amaziah did, from beginning to end, is written down in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.
27 Après qu’Amasias se fut détourné de Yahweh, on ourdit contre lui une conspiration à Jérusalem, et il s’enfuit à Lachis; mais on envoya après lui des hommes à Lachis, et on l’y mit à mort.
After Amaziah gave up following the Lord, a plot was hatched against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. But the plotters sent men to Lachish to hunt him down, and they killed him there.
28 On le transporta sur des chevaux, et on l’enterra avec ses pères dans la ville de Juda.
They brought him back by horse and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
