1 Samuel 7

1 Les gens de Cariathiarim vinrent et firent monter l’arche de Yahweh; ils la conduisirent dans la maison d’Abinadab, sur la colline, et ils consacrèrent son fils Eléazar pour garder l’arche de Yahweh.

Then came the men of Kiriath-jearim and fetched up the ark of Yahweh, and brought it into the house of Abinadab, in the hill, —and, Eleazar his son, hallowed they, to guard the ark of Yahweh.

2 Depuis le jour où l’arche fut déposée à Cariathiarim, il se passa un long temps, vingt années, et toute la maison d’Israël poussa des gémissements vers Yahweh.

And so it was, that, from the day the ark came to dwell in Kiriath-jearim, the days multiplied, and became twenty years, —and all the house of Israel went mourning after Yahweh.

3 Et Samuel dit à toute la maison d’Israël: « Si c’est de tout votre cœur que vous revenez à Yahweh, ôtez du milieu de vous les dieux étrangers et les Astartés, attachez fermement votre cœur à Yahweh et servez-le lui seul, et il vous délivrera de la main des Philistins. »

And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If, with all your heart, ye are returning unto Yahweh, then put away the gods of the foreigner out of your midst, and the Ashtoreths—and firmly set your heart towards Yahweh, and serve him, alone, that he may deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

4 Alors les enfants d’Israël ôtèrent du milieu d’eux les Baals et les Astartés, et ils servirent Yahweh seul.

So the sons of Israel put away the Baals, and the Ashtoreths, —and served Yahweh, alone.

5 Samuel dit: « Assemblez tout Israël à Maspha, et je prierai Yahweh pour vous. »

And Samuel said, Gather all Israel unto Mizpah, —that I may pray for you, unto Yahweh.

6 Et ils s’assemblèrent à Maspha. Ils puisèrent de l’eau et la répandirent devant Yahweh, et ils jeûnèrent ce jour-là, en disant: « Nous avons péché contre Yahweh. » Et Samuel jugea les enfants d’Israël à Maspha.

So they gathered themselves unto Mizpah, and drew water, and poured it out before Yahweh, and fasted on that day, and said, there, We have sinned against Yahweh. And Samuel judged the sons of Israel in Mizpah.

7 Les Philistins apprirent que les enfants d’Israël s’étaient assemblés à Maspha, et les princes des Philistins montèrent contre Israël. Les enfants d’Israël l’apprirent et eurent peur des Philistins;

And, when the Philistines heard that the sons of Israel had gathered themselves together unto Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel, —and, when the sons of Israel heard it, they shrank with fear, from the face of the Philistines.

8 et les enfants d’Israël dirent à Samuel: « Ne cesse pas de crier pour nous vers Yahweh, notre Dieu, afin qu’il nous sauve de la main des Philistins. »

And the sons of Israel said unto Samuel, Do not turn in silence from us, from making outcry unto Yahweh our God, —that he would save us out of the hand of the Philistines.

9 Samuel prit un agneau de lait, et l’offrit tout entier en holocauste à Yahweh; et Samuel cria vers Yahweh pour Israël, et Yahweh l’exauça.

So Samuel took one sucking lamb, and offered it up, as an entire ascending-sacrifice unto Yahweh, —and Samuel made outcry unto Yahweh, for Israel, and Yahweh answered him.

10 Pendant que Samuel offrait l’holocauste, les Philistins s’approchèrent pour attaquer Israël. Mais Yahweh fit retentir en ce jour le tonnerre, avec un grand bruit, sur les Philistins, et les mit en déroute, et ils furent battus devant Israël.

And, when Samuel was offering up the ascending-sacrifice, the Philistines, drew near to fight against Israel, —but Yahweh thundered with a great noise throughout that day, over the Philistines, and confused them, and they were smitten before Israel.

11 Les hommes d’Israël, sortant de Maspha, poursuivirent les Philistins et les battirent jusqu’au-dessous de Beth-Char.

And the men of Israel went forth out of Mizpah, and pursued the Philistines, —and smote them as far as under Beth-car.

12 Samuel prit une pierre, qu’il plaça entre Maspha et Sen, et il lui donna le nom d’Eben-Ezer, en disant: « Jusqu’ici Yahweh nous a secourus. »

And Samuel took a certain stone, and set it between Mizpah and Yeshanah, and called the name thereof Eben-ezer, —and said, Hitherto, hath Yahweh helped us.

13 Ainsi humiliés, les Philistins ne revinrent plus sur le territoire d’Israël; la main de Yahweh fut sur les Philistins pendant toute la vie de Samuel.

So the Philistines were subdued, and, no more, came within the boundary of Israel, —and the hand of Yahweh was against the Philistines, all the days of Samuel.

14 Les villes que les Philistins avaient prises sur Israël retournèrent à Israël, depuis Accaron jusqu’à Geth; Israël arracha leur territoire des mains des Philistins. Et il y eut paix entre Israël et les Amorrhéens.

And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even as far as Gath; even the boundaries thereof, did Israel rescue out of the hand of the Philistines, —thus came there to be peace between Israel and the Amorites.

15 Samuel jugea Israël tout le temps de sa vie.

And Samuel judged Israel, all the days of his life.

16 Chaque année il s’en allait, faisant le tour par Béthel, Galgala et Maspha, et il jugeait Israël dans tous ces lieux.

And he used to take his journey, from year to year, and go round to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpah, —and used to judge Israel, at all these places.

17 Il revenait ensuite à Rama, où était sa maison, et là il jugeait Israël; il y bâtit un autel à Yahweh.

And, his returning, was to Ramah, for, there, was his house, and, there, judged he Israel, —so he built there an altar unto Yahweh.
