1 Samuel 5

1 Les Philistins, s’étant emparés de l’arche de Dieu, la transportèrent d’Eben-Ezer à Azot.

And the Philistines have taken the ark of God, and bring it in from Eben-Ezer to Ashdod,

2 Les Philistins prirent l’arche de Dieu, la firent entrer dans la maison de Dagon, et la placèrent auprès de Dagon.

and the Philistines take the ark of God and bring it into the house of Dagon, and set it near Dagon.

3 Le lendemain, les Azotiens se levèrent de bon matin, et voici que Dagon était étendu la face contre terre devant l’arche de Yahweh. Ils prirent Dagon et le remirent à sa place.

And the Ashdodites rise early on the morrow, and lo, Dagon is fallen on its face to the earth, before the ark of Jehovah; and they take Dagon, and put it back to its place.

4 Le jour suivant, ils se levèrent de bon matin et voici que Dagon était encore étendu la face contre terre devant l’arche de Yahweh; la tête de Dagon et ses deux mains détachées gisaient sur le seuil,

And they rise early in the morning on the morrow, and lo, Dagon is fallen on its face to the earth, before the ark of Jehovah, and the head of Dagon, and the two palms of its hands are cut off at the threshold, only the fishy part hath been left to him;

5 et il ne lui restait que le tronc en forme de poisson. C’est pourquoi les prêtres de Dagon et tous ceux qui entrent dans la maison de Dagon à Azot ne posent pas le pied sur le seuil de Dagon, jusqu’à ce jour.

therefore the priests of Dagon, and all those coming into the house of Dagon, tread not on the threshold of Dagon, in Ashdod, till this day.

6 La main de Yahweh, s’appesantit sur les Azotiens et les désola; il les frappa de tumeurs, à Azot et dans son territoire.

And the hand of Jehovah is heavy on the Ashdodites, and He maketh them desolate, and smiteth them with emerods, Ashdod and its borders.

7 Voyant ce qui arrivait, les Azotiens dirent: « Que l’arche du Dieu d’Israël ne reste pas chez nous, car il appesantit sa main sur nous et sur Dagon, notre dieu. »

And the men of Ashdod see that [it is] so, and have said, 'The ark of the God of Israel doth not abide with us, for hard hath been His hand upon us, and upon Dagon our god.'

8 Et ils convoquèrent chez eux par des envoyés tous les princes des Philistins, et ils dirent: « Que ferons-nous de l’arche du Dieu d’Israël? » Les princes répondirent: « Que l’on transporte à Geth l’arche du Dieu d’Israël! » Et l’on y transporta l’arche du Dieu d’Israël.

And they send and gather all the princes of the Philistines unto them, and say, 'What do we do to the ark of the God of Israel?' and they say, 'To Gath let the ark of the God of Israel be brought round;' and they bring round the ark of the God of Israel;

9 Mais, dès qu’on l’eut transportée, la main de Yahweh fut sur la ville, et il y eut une très grande épouvante; il frappa les gens de la ville, depuis le petit jusqu’au grand, et il leur poussa des tumeurs.

and it cometh to pass after they have brought it round, that the hand of Jehovah is against the city — a very great destruction; and He smiteth the men of the city, from small even unto great; and break forth on them do emerods.

10 Alors ils envoyèrent l’arche de Dieu à Accaron. Lorsque l’arche de Dieu entra dans Accaron, les Accaronites poussèrent des cris, en disant: « On a transporté chez nous l’arche du Dieu d’Israël, pour nous faire mourir, nous et notre peuple. »

And they send the ark of God to Ekron, and it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the ark of God to Ekron, that the Ekronites cry out, saying, 'They have brought round unto us the ark of the God of Israel, to put us to death — and our people.'

11 Et ils convoquèrent par des envoyés tous les princes des Philistins, et ils dirent: « Renvoyez l’arche du Dieu d’Israël; qu’elle retourne en son lieu, afin qu’elle ne nous fasse pas mourir, nous et notre peuple. »

And they send and gather all the princes of the Philistines, and say, 'Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and it turneth back to its place, and it doth not put us to death — and our people;' for there hath been a deadly destruction throughout all the city, very heavy hath the hand of God been there,

12 Car il y avait dans toute la ville une frayeur mortelle, et la main de Dieu s’y appesantissait fortement. Les gens qui ne mourraient pas étaient frappés de tumeurs, et les cris de détresse de la ville montaient jusqu’au ciel.

and the men who have not died have been smitten with emerods, and the cry of the city goeth up into the heavens.
