1 Samuel 17
1 Les Philistins, ayant rassemblé leurs armées pour faire la guerre, se réunirent à Socho, qui appartient à Juda; ils campèrent entre Socho et Azéca, à Ephès-Dommim.
And the Philistines gather their armies to battle, and gather themselves to Socchoth of Judaea, and encamp between Socchoth and Azeca Ephermen.
2 Saül et les hommes d’Israël se rassemblèrent aussi et campèrent dans la vallée de Térébinthe; ils se rangèrent en bataille en face des Philistins.
And Saul and the men of Israel gather together, and they encamp in the valley, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.
3 Les Philistins étaient postés sur la montagne d’un côté, et Israël était posté sur la montagne de l’autre côté: la vallée était entre eux.
And the Philistines stand on the mountain on one side, and Israel stands on the mountain on the other side, and the valley was between them.
4 Alors sortit des camps des Philistins un champion; il se nommait Goliath, il était de Geth, et sa taille était de six coudées et un palme.
And there went forth a mighty man out of the army of the Philistines, Goliath, by name, out of Geth, his height [was] four cubits and a span.
5 Un casque d’airain couvrait sa tête, et il portait une cuirasse à écailles; et le poids de la cuirasse était de cinq mille sicles d’airain.
And [he had] a helmet upon his head, and he wore a breastplate of chain armour; and the weight of his breastplate [was] five thousand shekels of brass and iron.
6 Il avait aux pieds une chaussure d’airain et un javelot d’airain entre ses épaules.
And greaves of grass [were] upon his legs, and a brazen target [was] between his shoulders.
7 Le bois de sa lance était comme une ensouple de tisserand, et la pointe de sa lance pesait six cents sicles de fer; celui qui portait son bouclier marchait devant lui.
And the staff of his spear [was] like a weaver's beam, and the spear's head [was formed] of six hundred shekels of iron; and his armour-bearer went before him.
8 Goliath s’arrêta et, s’adressant aux bataillons d’Israël, il leur cria: « Pourquoi êtes-vous sortis pour vous ranger en bataille? Ne suis-je pas le Philistin, et n’êtes-vous pas les esclaves de Saül? Choisissez un homme qui descende contre moi.
And he stood and cried to the army of Israel, and said to them, Why are you come forth to set yourselves in battle array against us? Am not I a Philistine, and you Hebrews of Saul? Choose for yourselves a man, and let him come down to me.
9 S’il l’emporte en se battant avec moi et qu’il me tue, nous vous serons assujettis; mais si je l’emporte sur lui et que je le tue, vous nous serez assujettis et vous nous servirez. »
And if he shall be able to fight against me, and shall strike me, then will we be your servants: but if I should prevail and strike him, you shall be our servants, and serve us.
10 le Philistin ajouta: « Je jette aujourd’hui ce défi à l’armée d’Israël: Donnez-moi un homme, et nous nous battrons ensemble. »
And the Philistine said, Behold, I have defied the armies of Israel this very day: give me a man, and we will both of us fight in single combat.
11 En entendant ces paroles du Philistin, Saül et tout Israël furent effrayés et saisis d’une grande crainte.
And Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, and they were dismayed, and greatly terrified.
12 Or David était fils de cet Ephratéen de Bethléem de Juda nommé Isaï, qui avait huit fils; cet homme, au temps de Saül, était vieux, avancé en âge.
[And David son of an Ephrathite said, this Eplarathite was of Bethleem Juda, and his name was Jessae, and he had eight sons. And the man passed for an old man amongst men in the days of Saul. ]
13 Les trois fils aînés d’Isaï étaient allés suivre Saül à la guerre; et les noms de ces trois fils qui étaient allés à la guerre étaient Eliab l’aîné, Abinadab le second, et Samma le troisième.
[And the three elder sons of Jessae went and followed Saul to the war, and the ] [names of his sons that went to the war were, Eliab his first-born, and his second Aminadab, and his third son Samma. ]
14 David était le plus jeune. Les trois aînés suivaient Saül,
[And David himself ] [was the younger son, and the three elder followed Saul. ]
15 et David allait et venait d’auprès de Saül, pour paître les brebis de son père à Bethléem.
[And David departed and returned from Saul, ] [to feed his father’s sheep in Bethleem; ]
16 Le Philistin s’avançait matin et soir, et il se présenta pendant quarante jours.
[And the Philistine advanced morning and evening, and stood up forty days. ]
17 Isaï dit à David, son fils: « Prends pour tes frères cet épha de grain rôti et ces dix pains, et cours au camp vers tes frères.
[And Jessae said to David, Take now to your brethren an ephah of this meal, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp and give them to your brothers. ]
18 Et ces dix fromages, porte-les au chef de leur millier. Tu visiteras tes frères pour voir s’ils se portent bien, et tu prendras d’eux un gage.
[And you shall carry to the captain of the thousand ] [these ten cheeses of milk, and you shall see how your brethren fare, and learn what they lack. ]
19 Saül et eux, et tous les hommes d’Israël, sont dans la vallée de Térébinthe, faisant la guerre aux Philistins. »
[And Saul himself and all the men of Israel were in the valley of the Oak, warring with the Philistines. ]
20 David se leva de bon matin et, laissant les brebis à un gardien, il prit les provisions et partit, comme Isaï le lui avait commandé. Quand il arriva au campement, l’armée sortait du camp pour se ranger en bataille et on poussait des cris de guerre.
[And David rose early in the morning, and left the sheep to a keeper, and took and went as Jessae commanded him, and he came to the trench and to the army as it was going out to fight, and they shouted for the battle. ]
21 Israélites et Philistins se rangèrent en ligne, troupe contre troupe.
[And Israel and the Philistines formed their lines one opposite the other. ]
22 David déposa ses bagages entre les mains du gardien des bagages, et courut vers la troupe. Aussitôt arrivé, il demanda à ses frères comment ils se portaient.
[And David deposited his burden in the hand of a keeper, and ran to the line, and went and asked his brethren how they Were. ]
23 Pendant qu’il s’entretenait avec eux, voici que le champion, — il se nommait Goliath, le Philistin de Geth, — s’avança hors des rangs des Philistins, tenant les mêmes discours et David l’entendit.
[And while he was speaking with them, behold the Amessaean advanced, Goliath by name, the Philistine of Geth, of the armies of the Philistines, and he spoke ] [as before, and David heard. ]
24 En voyant cet homme, tous ceux d’Israël se retirèrent devant lui, saisis d’une grande crainte.
[And all the men of Israel when they saw the man fled from before him, and they were greatly terrified. ]
25 Un Israélite dit: « Voyez-vous cet homme qui s’avance? C’est pour défier Israël qu’il s’avance. Celui qui le tuera, le roi le comblera de grandes richesses, il lui donnera sa fille et il affranchira de toute charge la maison de son père en Israël. »
[And the men of Israel said, Have you seen this man that comes up? for he has reproached Israel and has come up; and it shall be that the man who shall strike him, the king shall enrich him with great wealth and shall give him his daughter, and shall make his father’s house free in Israel. ]
26 David dit aux hommes qui se tenaient près de lui: « Que fera-t-on à celui qui tuera ce Philistin et qui ôtera l’opprobre de dessus Israël? Qui est donc ce Philistin, cet incirconcis, pour insulter les troupes du Dieu vivant? »
[and David spoke to the men who stood with him saying, Shall it indeed be done thus to the man who shall strike that Philistine, and take away reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he has defied the army of the living God? ]
27 Le peuple lui répéta les mêmes paroles, en disant: « Voilà ce qu’on fera à celui qui le tuera. »
[And the people spoke to him according to this Word, saying Thus shall it be done to the man Who shall strike him. ]
28 Eliab, son frère aîné, l’entendit parler aux hommes, et la colère d’Eliab s’enflamma contre David, et il dit: « Pourquoi es-tu descendu, et à qui as-tu laissé ce petit nombre de brebis dans le désert? Je connais ton orgueil et la malice de ton cœur; c’est pour voir la bataille que tu es descendu. »
[And Eliab his elder brother heard as he spoke to the men, and Eliab was very angry with David and said, Why have you thus come down, and with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the naughtiness of your heart, for you are come down to see the battle. ]
29 David répondit: « Qu’ai-je fait maintenant? N’est-ce pas une simple parole? »
[And David said what have I done now? ] [Have I no business here? ]
30 Et, se détournant de lui pour s’adresser à un autre, il tint le même langage; et le peuple lui répondit comme la première fois.
[And he turned from him towards another, and he spoke after the same manner; and the people answered him ] [after the former manner. ]
31 Lorsqu’on eut entendu les paroles prononcées par David, on les rapporta à Saül, qui le fit venir.
[And the Words which David spoke were heard and were reported ] [to Saul. And he took him to himself. ]
32 David dit à Saül: « Que le cœur ne défaille à personne! Ton serviteur ira combattre contre ce Philistin. »
And David said to Saul, Let not, I pray you, the heart of my lord be dejected within him: your servant will go, and fight with this Philistine.
33 Saül dit à David: « Tu ne peux aller contre ce Philistin pour combattre avec lui, car tu es un enfant, et il est un homme de guerre depuis sa jeunesse. »
And Saul said to David, You will not in anyway be able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are a mere youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
34 David dit à Saül: « Lorsque ton serviteur faisait paître les brebis de son père, et qu’un lion ou un ours venait et enlevait une brebis du troupeau,
And David said to Saul, Your servant was tending the flock for his father; and when a lion came and a she-bear, and took a sheep out of the flock,
35 je me mettais à sa poursuite, je le frappais et j’arrachais la brebis de sa gueule; s’il se dressait contre moi, je le saisissais à la mâchoire, je le frappais et je le tuais.
then I went forth after him, and struck him, and drew [the spoil] out of his mouth: and as he rose up against me, then I caught hold of his throat, and struck him, and killed him.
36 Ton serviteur a tué le lion comme l’ours, et il en sera du Philistin, de cet incirconcis, comme de l’un d’eux, car il a insulté les troupes du Dieu vivant. »
Your servant struck both the lion and the bear, and the uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them: shall I not go and strike him, and remove this day a reproach from Israel? For who [is] this uncircumcised one, who has defied the army of the living God?
37 David ajouta: « Yahweh qui m’a délivré du lion et de l’ours, me délivrera aussi de la main de ce Philistin. » Et Saül dit à David: « Va, et que Yahweh soit avec toi! »
The Lord who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this uncircumcised Philistine. And Saul said to David, Go, and the Lord shall be with you.
38 Saül fit revêtir David de ses habits, mit sur sa tête un casque d’airain et l’endossa d’une cuirasse;
And Saul clothed David with a military coat, and [put] his brazen helmet on his head.
39 puis David ceignit l’épée de Saül par-dessus son armure, et il essaya de marcher, car il n’avait jamais essayé d’armure. David dit à Saül: « Je ne puis marcher avec ces armes, je n’y suis pas accoutumé. » Et, s’en étant débarrassé,
And he girded David with his sword over his coat: and he made trial walking [with them] once and again: and David said to Saul, I shall not be able to go with these, for I have not proved [them]: so they remove them from him.
40 David prit en main son bâton, choisit dans le torrent cinq cailloux polis et les mit dans son sac de berger, dans sa gibecière. Puis, sa fronde à la main, il s’avança vers le Philistin.
And he took his staff in his hand, and he chose for himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the shepherd's scrip which he had for his store, and his sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine.
41 Le Philistin s’approcha peu à peu de David, précédé de l’homme qui portait le bouclier.
And the Philistine advanced and drew near to David, and a man bearing his shield went before him, and the Philistine looked on.
42 Le Philistin regarda, vit David et le méprisa, car il était très jeune, blond et beau de visage.
And Goliath saw David, and despised him; for he was a lad, and ruddy, with a fair countenance.
43 Le Philistin dit à David: « Suis-je un chien, que tu viennes à moi avec un bâton? » Et le Philistin maudit David par ses dieux.
And the Philistine said to David, Am I as a dog, that you come against me with a staff and stones? [and David said, Nay, but worse than a dog.] And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
44 Et le Philistin dit à David: « Viens à moi, que je donne ta chair aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes des champs. »
And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air, and to the beasts of the earth.
45 David répondit au Philistin: « Tu viens à moi avec l’épée, la lance et le javelot; et moi je viens à toi au nom de Yahweh des armées, du Dieu des bataillons d’Israël, que tu as insulté.
And David said to the Philistine, You come to me with sword, and with spear, and with shield; but I come to you in the name of the Lord God of hosts of the army of Israel, which you have defied
46 Aujourd’hui Yahweh te livrera entre mes mains, je te frapperai et j’enlèverai ta tête de dessus toi; aujourd’hui je donnerai les cadavres de l’armée des Philistins aux oiseaux du ciel et aux animaux de la terre; et toute la terre saura qu’Israël a un Dieu;
this day. And the Lord shall deliver you this day into my hand; and I will kill you, and take away your head from off you, and will give your limbs and the limbs of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky, and to the wild beasts of the earth; and all the earth shall know that there is a God in Israel.
47 et toute cette multitude saura que ce n’est ni par l’épée ou par la lance que Yahweh sauve, car à Yahweh appartient la guerre, et il vous a livrés entre nos mains. »
And all this assembly shall know that the Lord delivers not by sword or spear, for the battle [is] the Lord's, and the Lord will deliver you into our hands.
48 Le Philistin, s’étant levé, se mit en marche et s’avança au-devant de David, et David se hâta de courir, vers le front de la troupe, à la rencontre du Philistin.
And the Philistine arose and went to meet David.
49 David mit la main dans sa gibecière, en retira une pierre et la lança avec sa fronde; il frappa le Philistin au front, et la pierre s’enfonça dans son front, et il tomba le visage contre terre.
And David stretched out his hand to his scrip, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead, and the stone penetrated through the helmet into his forehead, and he fell upon his face to the ground.
50 Ainsi David, avec une fronde et une pierre, fut plus fort que le Philistin, il frappa à mort le Philistin. Et il n’y avait pas d’épée dans la main de David.
[So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him, and there was no sword in the hand of David. ]
51 David courut, s’arrêta près du Philistin et, s’étant saisi de son épée qu’il tira du fourreau, il le tua et lui coupa la tête avec elle.
And David ran, and stood upon him, and took his sword, and killed him, and cut off his head: and the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, and they fled.
52 Voyant leur héros mort, les Philistins prirent la fuite. Et les hommes d’Israël et de Juda se levèrent, en poussant des cris, et poursuivirent les Philistins jusqu’à l’entrée de Geth et jusqu’aux portes d’Accaron. Les cadavres des Philistins jonchèrent le chemin de Saraïm jusqu’à Geth et jusqu’à Accaron.
And the men of Israel and Juda arose, and shouted and pursued them as far as the entrance to Geth, and as far as the gate of Ascalon: and the slain men of the Philistines fell in the way of the gates, both to Geth, and to Accaron.
53 A leur retour de la poursuite des Philistins, les enfants d’Israël pillèrent leur camp.
And the men of Israel returned from pursuing after the Philistines, and they destroyed their camp.
54 David prit la tête du Philistin et la fit porter à Jérusalem, et il mit dans sa tente les armes du Philistin.
And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.
55 Lorsque Saül eut vu David s’avancer à la rencontre du Philistin, il dit à Abner, chef de l’armée: « De qui ce jeune homme est-il fils, Abner? » Abner répondit: « Aussi vrai que ton âme est vivante, ô roi, je l’ignore. »
And when Saul saw David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abener the captain of the host, Whose son is this youth? and Abener said, As your sould lives, O King, I know not.
56 Le roi lui dit: « Informe-toi donc de qui est fils ce jeune homme. »
And the king said, Do you ask whose son this youth is.
57 Quand David fut de retour après avoir tué le Philistin, Abner le prit et le mena devant Saül; David avait à la main la tête du Philistin.
And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abener took him and brought him before Saul, and the head of the Philistine was in his hand.
58 Saül lui dit: « De qui es-tu fils, jeune homme. » Et David répondit: « Je suis fils de ton serviteur, Isaï de Bethléem. »
And Saul said to him, Whose son are you, young man? and David said, The son of your servant Jessae the Bethleemite.
