1 Rois 19
1 Achab rapporta à Jézabel tout ce qu’Elie avait fait, et comment il avait tué par l’épée tous les prophètes.
And Ahab declares to Jezebel all that Elijah did, and all of how he slew all the prophets by the sword,
2 Et Jézabel envoya un messager à Elie pour lui dire: « Que les dieux me traitent dans toute leur rigueur, si demain à cette heure je n’ai pas fait de ta vie comme tu as fait de la vie de chacun d’eux? »
and Jezebel sends a messenger to Elijah, saying, “Thus the gods do, and thus do they add—surely about this time tomorrow, I make your life as the life of one of them.”
3 Elie, voyant cela, se leva et partit pour sauver sa vie. Il arriva à Bersabée, qui appartient à Juda, et y laissa son serviteur.
And he fears, and rises, and goes for his life, and comes to Beer-Sheba, that [is] Judah’s, and leaves his young man there,
4 Pour lui, il alla dans le désert l’espace d’une journée de marche; arrivé là, il s’assit sous un genêt et demanda pour lui la mort, en disant: « C’est assez! Maintenant, Yahweh, prends ma vie, car je ne suis pas meilleur que mes pères! »
and he himself has gone a day’s journey into the wilderness, and comes and sits under a certain broom tree, and desires his soul to die, and says, “Enough, now, O YHWH, take my soul, for I [am] not better than my fathers.”
5 Il se coucha et s’endormit sous le genêt. Et voici qu’un ange le toucha et lui dit: « Lève-toi, mange. »
And he lies down and sleeps under a certain broom tree, and behold, a messenger is reaching toward him and says to him, “Rise, eat”;
6 Il regarda, et voici qu’il y avait à son chevet un gâteau cuit sur des pierres chauffées et une cruche d’eau. Après avoir mangé et bu, il se recoucha.
and he looks attentively, and behold, at his bolster [is] a cake [on] burning stones, and a dish of water, and he eats, and drinks, and turns, and lies down.
7 L’ange de Yahweh vint une seconde fois, le toucha et dit: « Lève-toi, mange, car le chemin est trop long pour toi. »
And the messenger of YHWH turns back a second time, and is reaching toward him, and says, “Rise, eat, for the way is too great for you”;
8 Il se leva, mangea et but, et, avec la force que lui donna cette nourriture, il marcha quarante jours et quarante nuits jusqu’à la montagne de Dieu, à Horeb.
and he rises, and eats, and drinks, and goes in the power of that food [for] forty days and forty nights, to the mountain of God—Horeb.
9 Là, il entra dans la caverne, et il y passa la nuit. Et voici que la parole de Yahweh lui fut adressée, et il lui dit: « Que fais-tu ici, Elie? »
And he comes in there, to the cave, and lodges there, and behold, the word of YHWH [is] to him, and says to him, “What are you [doing] here, Elijah?”
10 Il répondit: « J’ai été plein de zèle pour Yahweh, le Dieu des armées; car les enfants d’Israël ont abandonné votre alliance, renversé vos autels, et tué par l’épée vos prophètes; je suis resté moi seul, et ils cherchent à m’ôter la vie. »
And he says, “I have been very zealous for YHWH, God of Hosts, for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant—they have thrown down Your altars, and they have slain Your prophets by the sword, and I am left, I, by myself, and they seek my life—to take it.”
11 Yahweh dit: « Sors, et tiens-toi dans la montagne devant Yahweh, car voici que Yahweh va passer. » Et il y eut, devant Yahweh, un vent fort et violent qui déchirait les montagnes et brisait les rochers: Yahweh n’était pas dans le vent. Après le vent, il y eut un tremblement de terre: Yahweh n’était pas dans le tremblement de terre.
And He says, “Go out, and you have stood on the mountain before YHWH.” And behold, YHWH is passing by, and a wind—great and strong—is tearing mountains, and shattering rocks before YHWH, [but] YHWH [is] not in the wind; and after the wind [is] a shaking, [but] YHWH [is] not in the shaking;
12 Et après le tremblement de terre, un feu: Yahweh n’était pas dans le feu. Et après le feu, un murmure doux et léger.
and after the shaking [is] a fire, [but] YHWH [is] not in the fire; and after the fire [is] a voice [like] a small whisper;
13 Quand Elie l’entendit, il s’enveloppa le visage de son manteau et, étant sorti, il se tint à l’entrée de la caverne. Et voici qu’une voix se fit entendre à lui, en disant: « Que fais-tu ici, Elie? »
and it comes to pass, at Elijah’s hearing [it], that he wraps his face in his robe, and goes out, and stands at the opening of the cave, and behold, a voice [speaks] to him, and it says, “What are you [doing] here, Elijah?”
14 Il répondit: « J’ai été plein de zèle pour Yahweh, le Dieu des armées; car les enfants d’Israël ont abandonné votre alliance, renversé vos autels et tué par l’épée vos prophètes; je suis resté, moi seul, et ils cherchent à m’ôter la vie! »

15 Yahweh lui dit: « Va, reprenant ton chemin, au désert de Damas, et, quand tu seras arrivé, tu oindras Hazaël pour roi sur la Syrie;
And YHWH says to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus, and you have gone in, and anointed Hazael for king over Aram,
16 tu oindras Jéhu, fils de Namsi, pour roi sur Israël, et tu oindras Elisée, fils de Saphat, d’Abel-Méhula, pour prophète à ta place.
and you anoint Jehu son of Nimshi for king over Israel, and you anoint Elisha son of Shaphat, of Abel-Meholah, for prophet in your stead.
17 Et celui qui échappera à l’épée de Hazaël, Jéhu le fera mourir; et celui qui échappera à l’épée de Jéhu, Elisée le fera mourir.
And it has been, he who has escaped from the sword of Hazael, Jehu puts to death, and he who has escaped from the sword of Jehu, Elisha puts to death;
18 Mais je laisserai en Israël sept mille hommes, savoir tous ceux qui n’ont pas fléchi le genou devant Baal, tous ceux dont la bouche ne l’a pas baisé. »
and I have left in Israel seven thousand—all the knees that have not bowed to Ba‘al, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”
19 Etant parti de là, Elie trouva Elisée, fils de Saphat, qui labourait; il y avait devant lui douze paires de bœufs, et il était avec la douzième. Elie s’approcha de lui, et il jeta sur lui son manteau.
And he goes there, and finds Elisha son of Shaphat, and he is plowing; twelve yoke [are] before him, and he [is] with the twelfth; and Elijah passes over to him, and casts his robe at him,
20 Elisée, quittant les bœufs, courut après Elie et dit: « Permets que j’embrasse mon père et ma mère, et je te suivrai. » Elie lui répondit: « Va, retourne, car que t’ai-je fait!... »
and he forsakes the ox, and runs after Elijah, and says, “Please let me give a kiss to my father and to my mother, and I go after you.” And he says to him, “Go, turn back, for what have I done to you?”
21 Elisée s’éloigna de lui et, ayant pris la paire de bœufs, il les égorgea; et avec le harnais des bœufs, il fit cuire leur chair et la donna à manger au peuple. Puis il se leva, suivit Elie et fut à son service.
And he turns back from after him, and takes the yoke of the ox, and sacrifices it, and with [the] instruments of the ox he has boiled its flesh, and gives to the people, and they eat, and he rises, and goes after Elijah, and serves him.
