Romains 2

1 C'est pourquoi tu es sans excuse, ô homme, quel que soit celui qui juge. Car dans ce que tu juges un autre, tu te condamnes toi-même. Car toi qui juges, tu pratiques les mêmes choses.

You are therefore inexcusable, O man, whoever you are, that sits in judgment; for in judging another you are condemning yourself. You, the judge, are habitually practising the very same things.

2 Nous savons que le jugement de Dieu est conforme à la vérité contre ceux qui pratiquent de telles choses.

"We know that God’s judgment against those who practise such vices is in accord with the truth," you say?

3 Penses-tu, ô homme qui juge ceux qui pratiquent de telles choses, et qui fais de même, que tu échapperas au jugement de Dieu?

Very well; and do you suppose, you who judge those that practise such vices, and are doing the very same, that you will elude the judgment of God?

4 Ou bien méprises-tu les richesses de sa bonté, de sa longanimité et de sa patience, ne sachant pas que la bonté de Dieu vous conduit à la repentance?

Or do you despise the riches of his kindness and forbearance and long patience? Do you not know that the kindness of God is leading you to repentance?

5 Mais selon votre dureté et votre impénitence, vous vous réservez la colère au jour de la fureur, de la révélation et du juste jugement de Dieu,

In your hardness and impenitence of heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath on the Day of Wrath, when the righteous judgment of God is revealed.

6 qui « rendra à chacun selon ses œuvres ».

For He will render to every man according to his works;

7 à ceux qui, par la persévérance dans la bonne action, recherchent la gloire, l'honneur et l'incorruptibilité, la vie éternelle; (aiōnios g166)

eternal life to those who by patience in well-doing strive for glory and honor and immortality; (aiōnios g166)

8 mais à ceux qui se complaisent dans l'égoïsme et n'obéissent pas à la vérité, mais obéissent à l'injustice, il y aura de la colère, de l'indignation,

but anger and wrath upon those who are self-willed and disobey the truth, but obey unrighteousness.

9 de l'oppression et de l'angoisse sur toute âme d'homme qui fait le mal, au Juif d'abord, et aussi au Grec.

Anguish and calamity will be upon every soul of man who practises evil, upon the Jew first, and also upon the Gentile;

10 Mais la gloire, l'honneur et la paix vont à tout homme qui fait le bien, au Juif d'abord, et aussi au Grec.

but glory and honor and peace to every man who does good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile.

11 Car il n'y a pas de partialité chez Dieu.

For there is no partiality with God.

12 En effet, tous ceux qui ont péché sans la loi périront aussi sans la loi. Tous ceux qui ont péché sous la loi seront jugés par la loi.

For all who have sinned without law will also perish without law; and all who have sinned under law will be judged by law.

13 Car ce ne sont pas ceux qui écoutent la loi qui sont justes devant Dieu, mais ceux qui la mettent en pratique qui seront justifiés

For it is not the hearers of law who are righteous in the eyes of God; nay, it is the doers of law who will be accounted righteous.

14 (car lorsque les païens qui n'ont pas la loi font par nature les choses de la loi, ceux-là, n'ayant pas la loi, sont une loi pour eux-mêmes,

For when Gentiles, who have no law, obey by natural instinct the commands of the Law, they even though they have no law, are a law to themselves.

15 en ce qu'ils montrent l'œuvre de la loi écrite dans leur cœur, leur conscience en rendant témoignage avec eux, et leurs pensées entre eux les accusant ou bien les excusant)

For they show that the work of the Law is written in their hearts, while their conscience bears them witness, as their reasonings accuse, or it may be defend, them,

16 au jour où Dieu jugera les secrets des hommes, selon ma Bonne Nouvelle, par Jésus-Christ.

in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

17 En effet, tu portes le nom de Juif, tu te reposes sur la loi, tu te glorifies en Dieu,

Now if you bear the name of a Jew, and rely upon law, and boast yourself in God,

18 tu connais sa volonté, et tu approuves les choses excellentes, étant instruit par la loi,

and know his will, and can test the things that differ; if you are instructed out of the Law,

19 et tu as l'assurance d'être toi-même un guide des aveugles, une lumière pour ceux qui sont dans les ténèbres,

and are confident that you yourself are a darkness,

20 un correcteur des insensés, un éducateur de bébés, ayant dans la loi la forme de la connaissance et de la vérité.

an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of the young, because you have in the Law the form of knowledge and of the truth - well then, you who are teaching others, do you ever teach yourself?

21 Toi donc qui enseignes un autre, n'enseignes-tu pas toi-même? Toi qui prêches que l'homme ne doit pas voler, voles-tu?

You who are preaching that a man should not steal, do you practise theft?

22 Vous qui dites que l'homme ne doit pas commettre d'adultère, commettez-vous l'adultère? Vous qui avez en horreur les idoles, pillez-vous les temples?

You who keep saying that a man should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who hold idols in abhorrence, are you plundering their temples?

23 Vous qui vous glorifiez de la loi, déshonorez-vous Dieu en désobéissant à la loi?

You who are making your boast in the Law, do you habitually dishonor God through your transgressions of the Law?

24 Car « le nom de Dieu est blasphémé parmi les païens à cause de vous », comme il est écrit.

For the name of God is continually blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you, even as the Scripture itself says.

25 En effet, la circoncision est utile, si tu mets la loi en pratique; mais si tu transgresses la loi, ta circoncision est devenue incirconcision.

Circumcision does indeed profit, if you are obedient to the Law; but if you habitually break the Law, your circumcision is become uncircumcision.

26 Si donc l'incirconcis observe les ordonnances de la loi, son incirconcision ne sera-t-elle pas considérée comme une circoncision?

So if the uncircumcised keeps the ordinance of the Law, shall not his uncircumcision be reckoned equivalent to circumcision.

27 Ceux qui sont physiquement incirconcis, mais qui accomplissent la loi, ne te jugeront-ils pas, toi qui, avec la lettre et la circoncision, es un transgresseur de la loi?

And shall not those who are physically uncircumcised, but who keep the Law, condemn you who are a breaker of the Law, although you have a written law and circumcision?

28 Car n'est pas Juif celui qui l'est extérieurement, ni la circoncision extérieure dans la chair;

For the real Jew is not the man who is one outwardly, and the real circumcision is not outward in the flesh;

29 mais est Juif celui qui l'est intérieurement, et la circoncision est celle du cœur, de l'esprit, non de la lettre, dont la louange ne vient pas des hommes, mais de Dieu.

but the real Jew is one inwardly, and real circumcision is heart- circumcision, spiritual, not literal, praised not by men, but by God.
