Proverbes 25
1 Voici encore des proverbes de Salomon, que les hommes d'Ézéchias, roi de Juda, ont copiés.
These are also parables of Solomon, which the men of Ezechias king of Juda copied out.
2 C'est la gloire de Dieu de dissimuler une chose, mais la gloire des rois est de rechercher une affaire.
It is the glory of God to conceal the word, and the glory of kings to search out the speech.
3 Comme les cieux pour la hauteur, et la terre pour la profondeur, ainsi le cœur des rois est insondable.
The heaven above, and the earth beneath, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.
4 Enlevez les scories de l'argent, et la matière sort pour le raffineur.
Take away the rust from silver, and there shall come forth a most pure vessel:
5 Éloignez les méchants de la présence du roi, et son trône sera établi dans la justice.
Take away wickedness from the face of the king, and his throne shall be established with justice.
6 Ne t'exalte pas en présence du roi, ou de revendiquer une place parmi les grands hommes;
Appear not glorious before the king, and stand not in the place of great men.
7 car il vaut mieux qu'on te dise: « Monte ici ». que de vous rabaisser en présence du prince, que tes yeux ont vu.
For it is better that it should be said to thee: Come up hither; than that thou shouldst be humbled before the prince.
8 Ne vous empressez pas de porter des accusations devant le tribunal. Que ferez-vous à la fin quand votre voisin vous fera honte?
The things which thy eyes have seen, utter not hastily in a quarrel: lest afterward thou mayst not be able to make amends, when thou hast dishonoured thy friend.
9 Débattez de votre cas avec votre voisin, et ne pas trahir la confiance d'un autre,
Treat thy cause with thy friend, and discover not the secret to a stranger:
10 de peur que celui qui l'entende ne vous fasse honte, et votre mauvaise réputation ne partira jamais.
Lest he insult over thee, when he hath heard it, and cease not to upbraid thee. Grace and friendship deliver a man: keep these for thyself, lest thou fall under reproach.
11 Une parole juste est comme des pommes d'or dans une monture d'argent.
To speak a word in due time, is like apples of gold on beds of silver.
12 Comme une boucle d'oreille d'or, et une parure d'or fin, de même qu'un sage réprobateur à une oreille obéissante.
As an earring of gold and a bright pearl, so is he that reproveth the wise, and the obedient ear.
13 Comme le froid de la neige au temps de la moisson, ainsi est un messager fidèle à ceux qui l'envoient; car il rafraîchit l'âme de ses maîtres.
As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to him that sent him, for he refresheth his soul.
14 Comme des nuages et du vent sans pluie, il en est de même pour celui qui se vante de ses dons de manière trompeuse.
As clouds, and wind, when no rain followeth, so is the man that boasteth, and doth not fulfill his promises.
15 C'est par la patience que le chef se laisse convaincre. Une langue douce brise l'os.
By patience a prince shall be appeased, and a soft tongue shall break hardness.
16 Avez-vous trouvé du miel? Mangez autant qu'il vous suffit, de peur que vous ne mangiez trop et ne vomissiez.
Thou hast found honey, eat what is sufficient for thee, lest being glutted therewith thou vomit it up.
17 Que ton pied soit rarement dans la maison de ton prochain, de peur qu'il ne se lasse de vous et ne vous haïsse.
Withdraw thy foot from the house of thy neighbour, lest having his fill he hate thee.
18 Un homme qui porte un faux témoignage contre son prochain est comme une massue, une épée, ou une flèche acérée.
A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour, is like a dart and a sword and a sharp arrow.
19 Confiance en quelqu'un d'infidèle en temps de difficulté est comme une mauvaise dent ou un pied boiteux.
To trust to an unfaithful man in the time of trouble, is like a rotten tooth, and weary foot,
20 Comme celui qui enlève un vêtement par temps froid, ou du vinaigre sur du soda, ainsi est celui qui chante des chansons à un cœur lourd.
And one that looseth his garment in cold weather. As vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to a very evil heart. As a moth doth by a garment, and a worm by the wood: so the sadness of a man consumeth the heart.
21 Si ton ennemi a faim, donne-lui à manger. S'il a soif, donnez-lui de l'eau à boire;
If thy enemy be hungry, give him to eat: if he thirst, give him water to drink:
22 car tu amasseras des charbons ardents sur sa tête, et Yahvé vous récompensera.
For thou shalt heap hot coals upon his head, and the Lord will reward thee.
23 Le vent du nord produit de la pluie; ainsi une langue médisante amène un visage en colère.
The north wind driveth away rain, as doth a sad countenance a backbiting tongue.
24 Il vaut mieux habiter à l'angle du toit. que de partager une maison avec une femme querelleuse.
It is better to sit in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman, and in a common house.
25 Comme de l'eau froide pour une âme assoiffée, C'est une bonne nouvelle venant d'un pays lointain.
As cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good tidings from a far country.
26 Comme une source boueuse et un puits pollué, ainsi est un homme juste qui cède devant les méchants.
A just man falling down before the wicked, is as a fountain troubled with the foot, and a corrupted spring.
27 Il n'est pas bon de manger beaucoup de miel, Il n'est pas non plus honorable de chercher son propre honneur.
As it is not good for a man to eat much honey, so he that is a searcher of majesty, shall be overwhelmed by glory.
28 Comme une ville démolie et sans murs est un homme dont l'esprit est sans retenue.
As a city that lieth open and is not compassed with walls, so is a man that cannot refrain his own spirit in speaking.
