Proverbes 1
1 Proverbes de Salomon, fils de David, roi d'Israël:
THE PROVERBS of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
2 pour connaître la sagesse et l'instruction; pour discerner les mots de la compréhension;
To know wisdom and instruction; to comprehend the words of understanding;
3 pour recevoir une instruction sur la manière d'agir avec sagesse, dans la droiture, la justice et l'équité;
To receive the discipline of wisdom, justice, and right, and equity;
4 pour donner de la prudence aux simples, la connaissance et la discrétion au jeune homme.
To give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion;
5 afin que le sage entende et s'instruise; afin que l'homme intelligent puisse atteindre le bon conseil;
That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning, and the man of understanding may attain unto wise counsels;
6 pour comprendre un proverbe et des paraboles, les mots et les énigmes des sages.
To understand a proverb, and a figure; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
7 La crainte de Yahvé est le commencement de la connaissance, mais les insensés méprisent la sagesse et l'instruction.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and discipline.
8 Mon fils, écoute les instructions de ton père, et n'abandonnez pas l'enseignement de votre mère;
Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother;
9 car ils seront une guirlande qui ornera ta tête, et des chaînes autour de votre cou.
For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
10 Mon fils, si des pécheurs te séduisent, ne sont pas consentants.
My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
11 S'ils disent: « Viens avec nous. Attendons le sang. Rôdons secrètement pour les innocents sans raison.
If they say: 'Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us lurk for the innocent without cause;
12 Engloutissons-les vivants comme le séjour des morts, et entier, comme ceux qui descendent dans la fosse. (Sheol h7585)
Let us swallow them up alive as the grave, and whole, as those that go down into the pit; (Sheol h7585)
13 Nous trouverons toutes les richesses précieuses. Nous remplirons nos maisons de butin.
We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil;
14 Vous jetterez votre sort parmi nous. Nous aurons tous un sac à main ».
Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse' —
15 mon fils, ne marche pas sur le chemin avec eux. Gardez votre pied hors de leur chemin,
My son, walk not thou in the way with them, restrain thy foot from their path;
16 car leurs pieds courent vers le mal. Ils sont pressés de verser du sang.
For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.
17 Car c'est en vain que le filet est tendu, aux yeux de tout oiseau;
For in vain the net is spread in the eyes of any bird;
18 mais ceux-ci attendent leur propre sang. Ils rôdent secrètement pour leur propre vie.
And these lie in wait for their own blood, they lurk for their own lives.
19 Il en est de même pour tous ceux qui sont avides de gain. Il enlève la vie de ses propriétaires.
So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; it taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
20 La sagesse appelle à haute voix dans la rue. Elle fait entendre sa voix sur les places publiques.
Wisdom crieth aloud in the streets, she uttereth her voice in the broad places;
21 Elle appelle à la tête des lieux bruyants. À l'entrée des portes de la ville, elle prononce ses mots:
She calleth at the head of the noisy streets, at the entrances of the gates, in the city, she uttereth her words:
22 « Jusqu'à quand, vous, les simples, aimerez-vous la simplicité? Combien de temps les moqueurs se délecteront-ils de la moquerie, et les imbéciles détestent la connaissance?
'How long, ye thoughtless, will ye love thoughtlessness? And how long will scorners delight them in scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
23 Tournez-vous vers ma réprimande. Voici, je vais répandre mon esprit sur vous. Je vous ferai connaître mes paroles.
Turn you at my reproof; behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
24 Car j'ai appelé, et vous avez refusé; J'ai tendu la main, et personne n'a prêté attention;
Because I have called, and ye refused, I have stretched out my hand, and no man attended,
25 mais vous avez ignoré tous mes conseils, et ne voulait pas de mes reproches;
But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof;
26 Moi aussi, je rirai de ton désastre. Je me moquerai quand la calamité vous atteindra,
I also, in your calamity, will laugh, I will mock when your dread cometh;
27 quand la calamité vous surprend comme une tempête, quand votre désastre arrive comme un tourbillon, quand la détresse et l'angoisse s'abattent sur vous.
When your dread cometh as a storm, and your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; when trouble and distress come upon you.
28 Alors ils m'invoqueront, mais je ne répondrai pas. Ils me chercheront avec soin, mais ils ne me trouveront pas,
Then will they call me, but I will not answer, they will seek me earnestly, but they shall not find me.
29 parce qu'ils détestaient la connaissance, et n'ont pas choisi la crainte de Yahvé.
For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD;
30 Ils n'ont pas voulu de mes conseils. Ils ont méprisé toutes mes réprimandes.
They would none of my counsel, they despised all my reproof.
31 C'est pourquoi ils mangeront du fruit de leur propre voie, et être remplis de leurs propres projets.
Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
32 Car l'égarement des simples les tuera. La facilité insouciante des imbéciles les détruira.
For the waywardness of the thoughtless shall slay them, and the confidence of fools shall destroy them.
33 Mais celui qui m'écoute habitera en sécurité, et seront à l'aise, sans craindre le moindre mal. »
But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely, and shall be quiet without fear of evil.'
