1 Or les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad avaient un très grand nombre de têtes de bétail. Ils virent le pays de Jaezer et le pays de Galaad. Voici, ce lieu était un lieu pour le bétail.
And the children of Ruben and the children of Gad had a multitude of cattle, very great; and they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Galaad; and the place was a place for cattle:
2 Les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben vinrent parler à Moïse, au sacrificateur Éléazar et aux chefs de l'assemblée, et dirent:
and the children of Ruben and the children of Gad came, and spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, saying,
3 « Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Hesbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo et Beon,
Ataroth, and Daebon, and Jazer, and Namra, and Esebon, and Eleale, and Sebama, and Nabau, and Baean,
4 le pays que Yahvé a frappé devant l'assemblée d'Israël, est un pays d'élevage, et vos serviteurs ont du bétail. »
the land which the Lord has delivered up before the children of Israel, is pasture land, and your servants have cattle.
5 Ils dirent: « Si nous avons trouvé grâce à tes yeux, que ce pays soit donné en propriété à tes serviteurs. Ne nous fais pas passer le Jourdain. »
And they said, If we have found grace in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession, and do not cause us to pass over Jordan.
6 Moïse dit aux fils de Gad et aux fils de Ruben: « Vos frères iront-ils à la guerre pendant que vous serez assis ici?
And Moses said to the sons of Gad and the sons of Ruben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall you sit here?
7 Pourquoi découragez-vous le cœur des enfants d'Israël d'aller dans le pays que l'Éternel leur a donné?
And why do you pervert the minds of the children of Israel, that they should not cross over into the land, which the Lord gives them?
8 Vos pères l'ont fait lorsque je les ai envoyés de Kadès-Barnéa pour voir le pays.
Did not your fathers thus, when I sent them from Cades Barne to spy out the land?
9 Car lorsqu'ils montèrent à la vallée d'Eshcol et qu'ils virent le pays, ils découragèrent le cœur des enfants d'Israël, pour qu'ils n'aillent pas dans le pays que l'Éternel leur avait donné.
And they went up to the valley of the cluster, and spied the land, and turned aside the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land, which the Lord gave them.
10 La colère de Yahvé s'enflamma ce jour-là, et il jura, en disant:
And the Lord was very angry in that day, and sware, saying,
11 « Aucun des hommes qui sont montés d'Égypte, depuis l'âge de vingt ans et au-dessus, ne verra le pays que j'ai juré à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob, parce qu'ils ne m'ont pas entièrement suivi,
Surely these men who came up out of Egypt from twenty years old and upward, who know good and evil, shall not see the land which I sware [to give] to Abraam and Isaac and Jacob, for they have not closely followed after me:
12 sauf Caleb, fils de Jephunné, le Kenizien, et Josué, fils de Nun, parce qu'ils ont entièrement suivi Yahvé ».
save Caleb the son of Jephonne, who was set apart, and Joshua the son of Naue, for they closely followed after the Lord.
13 La colère de Yahvé s'enflamma contre Israël, et il le fit errer dans le désert pendant quarante ans, jusqu'à ce que toute la génération qui avait fait le mal aux yeux de Yahvé fût consumée.
And the Lord was very angry with Israel; and for forty years he caused them to wander in the wilderness, until all the generation which did evil in the sight of the Lord was extinct.
14 « Voici, vous vous êtes levés à la place de vos pères, une multitude d'hommes pécheurs, pour augmenter la colère ardente de l'Éternel contre Israël.
Behold, you are risen up in the room of your fathers, a combination of sinful men, to increase yet farther the fierce wrath of the Lord against Israel.
15 Car si vous vous détournez de lui, il les abandonnera encore une fois dans le désert, et vous détruirez tout ce peuple. »
For you will turn away from him to desert him yet once more in the wilderness, and you will sin against this whole congregation.
16 Ils s'approchèrent de lui et dirent: Nous construirons ici des bergeries pour notre bétail, et des villes pour nos petits enfants;
And they came to him, and said, We will build here folds for our cattle, and cities for our possessions;
17 mais nous-mêmes, nous serons armés pour marcher devant les enfants d'Israël, jusqu'à ce que nous les ayons conduits à leur place. Nos petits enfants habiteront dans les villes fortifiées, à cause des habitants du pays.
and we will arm ourselves and go as an advanced guard before the children of Israel, until we shall have brought them into their place; and our possessions shall remain in walled cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
18 Nous ne retournerons pas dans nos maisons avant que les enfants d'Israël aient tous reçu leur héritage.
We will not return to our houses till the children of Israel shall have been distributed, each to his own inheritance.
19 Car nous n'hériterons pas avec eux de l'autre côté du Jourdain et au-delà, puisque notre héritage nous est échu de ce côté-ci du Jourdain, à l'est. »
And we will not any longer inherit with them from the other side of Jordan and onwards, because we have our full inheritance on the side beyond Jordan eastward.
20 Moïse leur dit: « Si vous faites cela, si vous vous armez pour aller à la guerre devant l'Éternel,
And Moses said to them, If you will do according to these words, if you will arm yourselves before the Lord for battle,
21 et que chacun de vos hommes armés passe le Jourdain devant l'Éternel jusqu'à ce qu'il ait chassé ses ennemis devant lui,
and every one of you will pass over Jordan fully armed before the Lord, until his enemy be destroyed from before his face,
22 et que le pays soit soumis à l'Éternel, alors vous reviendrez et vous serez quittes envers l'Éternel et envers Israël. Ce pays sera alors votre propriété devant Yahvé.
and the land shall be subdued before the Lord, then afterwards you shall return, and be guiltless before the Lord, and as regards Israel; and this land shall be to you for a possession before the Lord.
23 « Mais si tu ne le fais pas, voici, tu as péché contre l'Éternel, et sois sûr que ton péché te découvrira.
But if you will not do so, you will sin against the Lord; and you shall know your sin, when afflictions shall come upon you.
24 Bâtissez des villes pour vos petits enfants et des parcs pour vos brebis, et faites ce qui est sorti de votre bouche. »
And you shall build for yourselves cities for your store, and folds for your cattle; and you shall do that which proceeds out of your mouth.
25 Les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben parlèrent à Moïse et dirent: « Tes serviteurs feront ce que mon seigneur ordonne.
And the sons of Ruben and the sons of Gad spoke to Moses, saying, Your servants will do as our lord commands.
26 Nos petits enfants, nos femmes, nos troupeaux et tout notre bétail seront là, dans les villes de Galaad;
Our store, and our wives, and all our cattle shall be in the cities of Galaad.
27 mais tes serviteurs passeront, tout homme armé pour la guerre, devant l'Éternel pour combattre, comme le dit mon seigneur. »
But your servants will go over all armed and set in order before the Lord to battle, as [our] lord says.
28 Moïse donna des ordres à leur sujet au prêtre Éléazar, à Josué, fils de Nun, et aux chefs de famille des tribus des enfants d'Israël.
And Moses appointed to them [for judges] Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Naue, and the chiefs of the families of the tribes of Israel.
29 Moïse leur dit: « Si les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben passent avec vous le Jourdain, chacun armé pour combattre devant Yahvé, et que le pays soit soumis devant vous, vous leur donnerez le pays de Galaad en propriété;
And Moses said to them, If the sons of Ruben and the sons of Gad will pass over Jordan with you, every one armed for war before the Lord, and you shall subdue the land before you, then you shall give to them the land of Galaad for a possession.
30 mais s'ils ne passent pas avec vous armés, ils auront des propriétés au milieu de vous dans le pays de Canaan. »
But if they will not pass over armed with you to war before the Lord, then shall you cause to pass over their possessions and their wives and their cattle before you into the land of Chanaan, and they shall inherit with you in the land of Chanaan.
31 Les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben répondirent et dirent: « Nous ferons ce que l'Éternel a dit à vos serviteurs.
And the sons of Ruben and the sons of Gad answered, saying, Whatsoever the Lord says to his servants, that will we do.
32 Nous passerons armés devant Yahvé dans le pays de Canaan, et la possession de notre héritage restera avec nous au-delà du Jourdain. »
We will go over armed before the Lord into the land of Chanaan, and you shall give us our inheritance beyond Jordan.
33 Moïse donna aux fils de Gad, aux fils de Ruben et à la demi-tribu de Manassé, fils de Joseph, le royaume de Sihon, roi des Amoréens, et le royaume d'Og, roi de Basan, le pays, avec ses villes et ses limites, et les villes des environs.
And Moses gave to them, even to the sons of Gad and the sons of Ruben, and to the half tribe of Manasse of the sons of Joseph, the kingdom of Seon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Basan, the land and its cities with its coasts, the cities of the land round about.
34 Les fils de Gad bâtirent Dibon, Ataroth, Arœr,
And the sons of Gad built Daebon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
35 Atroth-Shophan, Jazer, Jogbeha,
and Sophar, and Jazer, and they set them up,
36 Beth Nimrah et Beth Haran: villes fortes et replis pour les brebis.
and Namram, and Baetharan, strong cities, and folds for sheep.
37 Les fils de Ruben bâtirent Hesbon, Élealé, Kiriathaïm,
And the sons of Ruben built Esebon, and Eleale, and Kariatham,
38 Nébo, Baal Méon, dont les noms ont été changés, et Sibma. Ils donnèrent d`autres noms aux villes qu`ils bâtirent.
and Beelmeon, surrounded [with walls], and Sebama; and they called the names of the cities which they built, after their own names.
39 Les fils de Makir, fils de Manassé, allèrent à Galaad, s'en emparèrent et dépossédèrent les Amoréens qui s'y trouvaient.
And a son of Machir the son of Manasse went to Galaad, and took it, and destroyed the Amorite who lived in it.
40 Moïse donna Galaad à Makir, fils de Manassé, qui l'habita.
And Moses gave Galaad to Machir the son of Manasse, and he lived there.
41 Jaïr, fils de Manassé, alla prendre ses villages, et il les appela Havvoth Jaïr.
And Jair the [son] of Manasse went and took their villages, and called them the villages of Jair.
42 Nobach alla prendre Kenath et ses villages, et il l'appela Nobach, d'après son propre nom.
And Nabau went and took Caath and her villages, and called them Naboth after his name.
