Néhémie 5
1 Alors s'éleva un grand cri du peuple et de ses femmes contre leurs frères les Juifs.
Nowe there was a great crie of the people, and of their wiues against their brethren the Iewes.
2 Car il y en avait qui disaient: « Nous, nos fils et nos filles, nous sommes nombreux. Allons chercher du blé, afin de manger et de vivre. »
For there were that said, We, our sonnes and our daughters are many, therefore we take vp corne, that we may eate and liue.
3 Il y en avait aussi qui disaient: « Nous hypothéquons nos champs, nos vignes et nos maisons. Allons chercher du blé, à cause de la famine. »
And there were that saide, We must gage our landes, and our vineyardes, and our houses, and take vp corne for the famine.
4 Il y en avait aussi qui disaient: « Nous avons emprunté de l'argent pour le tribut du roi en utilisant nos champs et nos vignes comme garantie.
There were also that said, We haue borowed money for the Kings tribute vpon our landes and our vineyardes.
5 Mais maintenant, notre chair est comme la chair de nos frères, nos enfants comme leurs enfants. Et voici que nous amenons nos fils et nos filles en esclavage pour les asservir, et certaines de nos filles ont été amenées en esclavage. Il n'est pas non plus en notre pouvoir d'y remédier, car d'autres hommes possèdent nos champs et nos vignes. »
And nowe our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, and our sonnes as their sonnes: and lo, we bring into subiection our sonnes and our daughters, as seruants, and there be of our daughters nowe in subiection, and there is no power in our handes: for other men haue our landes and our vineyardes.
6 J'ai été très irrité quand j'ai entendu leur cri et ces paroles.
Then was I very angrie when I heard their crie and these wordes.
7 Alors je me consultai, je contestai avec les nobles et les chefs, et je leur dis: « Vous exigez l'usure, chacun de son frère. » Je tins une grande assemblée contre eux.
And I thought in my minde, and I rebuked the princes, and the rulers, and saide vnto them, You lay burthens euery one vpon his brethren: and I set a great assemblie against them,
8 Je leur dis: « Nous avons racheté, selon notre capacité, nos frères les Juifs qui avaient été vendus aux nations; et vous, voulez-vous même vendre vos frères, et qu'ils soient vendus à nous? » Alors ils se turent, et ne trouvèrent pas un mot à dire.
And I said vnto them, We (according to our abilitie) haue redeemed our brethren the Iewes, which were solde vnto the heathen: and will you sell your brethren againe, or shall they be solde vnto vs? Then helde they their peace, and could not answere.
9 Je dis aussi: « Ce que vous faites n'est pas bien. Ne devriez-vous pas marcher dans la crainte de notre Dieu, à cause de l'opprobre des nations, nos ennemies?
I said also, That which ye do, is not good. Ought ye not to walke in the feare of our God, for the reproche of the heathen our enemies?
10 Moi aussi, mes frères et mes serviteurs, je leur prête de l'argent et du blé. De grâce, cessons cette usure.
For euen I, my brethren, and my seruants doe lende them money and corne: I pray you, let vs leaue off this burden.
11 Rendez-leur, je vous prie, dès aujourd'hui, leurs champs, leurs vignes, leurs oliviers et leurs maisons, ainsi que le centième de l'argent, du blé, du vin nouveau et de l'huile que vous leur faites payer. »
Restore, I pray you, vnto them this day their landes, their vineyardes, their oliues, and their houses, and remit the hundreth part of the siluer and of the corne, of the wine, and of the oyle that ye exact of them.
12 Ils dirent alors: « Nous les rétablirons, et nous ne leur demanderons rien. Nous le ferons, comme tu le dis. » Puis j'appelai les sacrificateurs, et je leur fis jurer qu'ils accompliraient cette promesse.
Then said they, We will restore it, and will not require it of them: we will doe as thou hast said. Then I called the Priestes, and caused them to sweare, that they shoulde doe according to this promise.
13 Je secouai aussi mes genoux, et je dis: « Que Dieu secoue tout homme de sa maison et de son travail, qui n'accomplit pas cette promesse, qu'il soit secoué et vidé comme cela. » Toute l'assemblée dit: « Amen » et loua Yahvé. Le peuple s'est conformé à cette promesse.
So I shooke my lappe, and said, So let God shake out euery man that wil not perfourme this promise from his house, and from his labour: euen thus let him be shaken out, and emptied. And all the Cogregation said, Amen, and praised the Lord: and the people did according to this promise.
14 De plus, depuis que j'ai été désigné pour être leur gouverneur dans le pays de Juda, depuis la vingtième année jusqu'à la trente-deuxième année du roi Artaxerxès, c'est-à-dire douze ans, moi et mes frères n'avons pas mangé le pain du gouverneur.
And from the time that the King gaue me charge to be gouernour in the lande of Iudah, from the twentieth yeere, euen vnto the two and thirtieth yeere of King Artahshashte, that is, twelue yeere, I, and my brethren haue not eaten the bread of the gouernour.
15 Mais les anciens gouverneurs qui m'ont précédé étaient soutenus par le peuple, et ils prenaient de lui du pain et du vin, plus quarante sicles d'argent; oui, même leurs serviteurs régnaient sur le peuple, mais moi, je n'ai pas agi ainsi, à cause de la crainte de Dieu.
For the former gouernours that were before me, had bene chargeable vnto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, besides fourtie shekels of siluer: yea, and their seruants bare rule ouer the people: but so did not I, because of the feare of God.
16 Oui, j'ai aussi poursuivi les travaux de cette muraille. Nous n'avons pas acheté de terres. Tous mes serviteurs étaient réunis là pour l'ouvrage.
But rather I fortified a portion in the worke of this wall, and we bought no lande, and all my seruants came thither together vnto the worke.
17 De plus, il y avait à ma table, parmi les Juifs et les chefs, cent cinquante hommes, sans compter ceux qui étaient venus chez nous d'entre les nations qui nous entouraient.
Moreouer there were at my table an hundreth and fiftie of the Iewes, and rulers, which came vnto vs from among the heathen that are about vs.
18 Or, ce qui a été préparé pour un jour, c'est un bœuf et six brebis de choix. On me préparait aussi des volailles, et une fois tous les dix jours une réserve de vin de toutes sortes. Mais pour tout cela, je n'ai pas exigé la solde du gouverneur, car la servitude était lourde pour ce peuple.
And there was prepared daily an oxe, and sixe chosen sheepe, and birdes were prepared for me, and within ten dayes wine for all in abundance. Yet for all this I required not the bread of the gouernour: for the bondage was grieuous vnto this people.
19 Souviens-toi de moi, mon Dieu, pour tout le bien que j'ai fait à ce peuple.
Remember me, O my God, in goodnesse, according to all that I haue done for this people.
