Matthieu 2
1 Or, lorsque Jésus naquit à Bethléem de Judée, du temps du roi Hérode, voici que des mages venus d'Orient se rendirent à Jérusalem, en disant:
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men [magi] from the East came into Jerusalem,
2 « Où est celui qui est né roi des Juifs? Car nous avons vu son étoile en Orient, et nous sommes venus nous prosterner devant lui. »
saying: “Where is he who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the East and have come to worship him.”
3 Lorsque le roi Hérode entendit cela, il fut troublé, et tout Jérusalem avec lui.
When Herod the king heard it he became agitated, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 Rassemblant tous les chefs des prêtres et les scribes du peuple, il leur demanda où le Christ devait naître.
And gathering all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
5 Ils lui répondirent: A Bethléhem de Judée, car ceci est écrit par le prophète,
So they said to him: “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it stands written by the prophet:
6 « Toi, Bethléem, terre de Judée. ne sont en rien les moindres parmi les princes de Juda; car de toi sortira un gouverneur qui sera le berger de mon peuple, Israël. »
‘And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are not at all the least among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will come a Ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
7 Alors Hérode appela secrètement les sages, et il apprit d'eux à quelle heure exactement l'étoile était apparue.
Then Herod, calling the wise men secretly, determined from them the time when the star appeared.
8 Il les envoya à Bethléem et leur dit: « Allez chercher le petit enfant. Quand vous l'aurez trouvé, faites-moi signe, afin que je vienne moi aussi l'adorer. »
And directing them to Bethlehem he said, “When you get there, search carefully for the young child; and should you find him, bring back word to me, so that I also may go and worship him.”
9 Après avoir entendu le roi, ils s'en allèrent. Et voici, l'étoile qu'ils avaient vue à l'orient les précédait, jusqu'à ce qu'elle vienne se placer au-dessus du lieu où était le petit enfant.
So having heard the king they departed, and there was the star that they had seen in the East! It went before them until it arrived and stopped above where the young Child was.
10 Quand ils virent l'étoile, ils se réjouirent d'une très grande joie.
Now when they saw the star they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy!
11 Ils entrèrent dans la maison et virent le petit enfant avec Marie, sa mère; ils se prosternèrent et l'adorèrent. Ouvrant leurs trésors, ils lui offrirent des présents: de l'or, de l'encens et de la myrrhe.
And coming into the house they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and falling down they worshiped Him; and opening their treasures they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense and myrrh.
12 Ayant été avertis en songe de ne pas retourner auprès d'Hérode, ils s'en retournèrent dans leur pays par un autre chemin.
Then, having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their own country by a different road.
13 Or, quand ils furent partis, voici qu'un ange du Seigneur apparut en songe à Joseph, en disant: « Lève-toi, prends le petit enfant et sa mère, fuis en Égypte, et restes-y jusqu'à ce que je te le dise, car Hérode cherchera le petit enfant pour le faire périr. »
Now when they had departed, again, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream saying: “Get up, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt and stay there until I tell you; because Herod is about to seek the young Child to destroy Him!”
14 Il se leva, prit de nuit le petit enfant et sa mère, et s'en alla en Égypte,
So he got up and took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt.
15 où il resta jusqu'à la mort d'Hérode, afin que s'accomplît ce que le Seigneur avait annoncé par le prophète: « J'ai appelé mon fils hors d'Égypte. »
And he was there until the death of Herod, so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet should be fulfilled, namely: “Out of Egypt I called my Son.”
16 Alors Hérode, voyant qu'on se moquait de lui par les sages, fut extrêmement irrité, et il envoya tuer tous les enfants mâles qui étaient à Bethléem et dans toute la campagne environnante, depuis l'âge de deux ans et au-dessous, selon le temps exact qu'il avait appris des sages.
Then Herod, when he saw that he had been deceived by the wise men, became very angry, and he sent out and killed all the boys who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.
17 Alors s'accomplit ce qui avait été annoncé par Jérémie, le prophète, en ces termes,
Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, namely:
18 « Une voix se fit entendre à Rama, des lamentations, des pleurs et un grand deuil, Rachel pleurant ses enfants; elle ne serait pas réconfortée, car ils ne sont plus. »
“A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, weeping and great mourning; Rachel weeping for her children and not wanting to be comforted, because they are no more.”
19 Mais lorsque Hérode fut mort, voici qu'un ange du Seigneur apparut en songe à Joseph en Égypte, et dit:
Now Herod having died, there, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt
20 « Lève-toi, prends le petit enfant et sa mère, et va dans le pays d'Israël, car ceux qui en voulaient à la vie du petit enfant sont morts. »
saying: “Get up, take the young Child and His mother and go into the land of Israel, for those seeking the life of the young Child have died.”
21 Il se leva, prit le petit enfant et sa mère, et se rendit dans le pays d'Israël.
So he got up and took the young Child and His mother and went into the land of Israel.
22 Mais, ayant appris qu'Archélaüs régnait en Judée à la place d'Hérode, son père, il eut peur de s'y rendre. Averti en songe, il se retira dans la région de la Galilée,
But hearing that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned in a dream he proceeded into the region of Galilee.
23 et vint s'établir dans une ville appelée Nazareth, afin que s'accomplisse ce qui avait été annoncé par les prophètes: il sera appelé Nazaréen.
And upon arriving he settled in a city called Natsareth [Branch-town], so that what was spoken through the prophets should be fulfilled, that He would be called a Natsorean [Branch-man].
