Matthieu 18

1 En cette heure-là, les disciples s'approchèrent de Jésus et dirent: « Qui donc est le plus grand dans le Royaume des cieux? »

At the same time came the disciples to Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

2 Jésus appela à lui un petit enfant, le plaça au milieu d'eux

And Jesus called a little child to him, and set him in the midst of them,

3 et dit: Je vous le dis en vérité, si vous ne vous convertissez et ne devenez comme des petits enfants, vous n'entrerez pas dans le royaume des cieux.

And said, Verily I say to you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

4 Celui donc qui s'abaisse comme ce petit enfant est le plus grand dans le Royaume des cieux.

Whoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

5 Quiconque reçoit en mon nom un tel petit enfant me reçoit moi-même,

And whoever shall receive one such little child in my name, receiveth me.

6 mais quiconque fait trébucher l'un de ces petits qui croient en moi, il vaudrait mieux pour lui qu'on lui suspende au cou une énorme meule de moulin et qu'on le fasse sombrer dans les profondeurs de la mer.

But whoever shall cause one of these little ones who believe in me, to sin, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and [that] he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

7 « Malheur au monde, à cause des occasions de chute! Car il faut bien que les occasions arrivent, mais malheur à celui par qui l'occasion arrive!

Woe to the world because of offenses! for it must needs be that offenses come; but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh!

8 Si ta main ou ton pied te font trébucher, coupe-les et jette-les loin de toi. Mieux vaut pour toi entrer dans la vie mutilé ou estropié, plutôt que d'avoir deux mains ou deux pieds pour être jeté dans le feu éternel. (aiōnios g166)

Wherefore, if thy hand or thy foot causeth thee to sin, cut them off, and cast [them] from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into everlasting fire. (aiōnios g166)

9 Si ton œil te fait trébucher, arrache-le et jette-le loin de toi. Il vaut mieux pour toi entrer dans la vie avec un seul œil, plutôt que d'avoir deux yeux pour être jeté dans la géhenne de feu. (Geenna g1067)

And if thy eye causeth thee to sin, pluck it out, and cast [it] from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell-fire. (Geenna g1067)

10 Veillez à ne pas mépriser l'un de ces petits, car je vous dis que dans les cieux, leurs anges voient toujours le visage de mon Père qui est dans les cieux.

Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.

11 Car le Fils de l'homme est venu pour sauver ce qui était perdu.

For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

12 « Que pensez-vous? Si un homme a cent brebis et que l'une d'elles s'égare, ne laisse-t-il pas les quatre-vingt-dix-neuf autres, ne va-t-il pas dans la montagne et ne cherche-t-il pas celle qui s'est égarée?

How think ye? if a man hath a hundred sheep, and one of them is gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and go to the mountains, and seek that which is gone astray?

13 S'il la trouve, je vous le dis en vérité, il s'en réjouit plus que des quatre-vingt-dix-neuf qui ne se sont pas égarées.

And if he findeth it, verily I say to you, he rejoiceth more over that [sheep], than over the ninety and nine which went not astray.

14 De même, ce n'est pas la volonté de votre Père qui est dans les cieux qu'un seul de ces petits périsse.

Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.

15 « Si ton frère pèche contre toi, va lui montrer sa faute, entre toi et lui seul. S'il t'écoute, tu as regagné ton frère.

Moreover, if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

16 Mais s'il n'écoute pas, prends-en un ou deux autres avec toi, afin que toute parole soit établie par la bouche de deux ou trois témoins.

But if he will not hear [thee], [then] take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

17 S'il refuse de les écouter, dis-le à l'assemblée. S'il refuse aussi d'écouter l'assemblée, qu'il soit pour vous comme un païen ou un publicain.

And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell [it] to the church: but if he shall neglect to hear the church, let him be to thee as a heathen and a publican.

18 En vérité, je vous le dis, tout ce que vous lierez sur la terre sera lié dans le ciel, et tout ce que vous délierez sur la terre sera délié dans le ciel.

Verily I say to you, Whatever ye shall bind on earth, shall be bound in heaven: and whatever ye shall loose on earth, shall be loosed in heaven.

19 Je vous le dis encore en vérité, si deux d'entre vous s'accordent sur la terre pour demander quoi que ce soit, cela leur sera accordé par mon Père qui est dans les cieux.

Again I say to you, That if two of you shall agree on earth, concerning any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them by my Father who is in heaven.

20 Car là où deux ou trois sont réunis en mon nom, je suis au milieu d'eux. »

For where two or three are assembled in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

21 Alors Pierre s'approcha et lui dit: « Seigneur, combien de fois mon frère péchera-t-il contre moi, et je lui pardonnerai? Jusqu'à sept fois? »

Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?

22 Jésus lui répondit: « Je ne te dis pas jusqu'à sept fois, mais jusqu'à soixante-dix fois sept fois.

Jesus saith to him, I say not to thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

23 C'est pourquoi le royaume des cieux est semblable à un roi qui voulait régler ses comptes avec ses serviteurs.

Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened to a certain king who would take account of his servants.

24 Comme il commençait à régler, on lui en amena un qui lui devait dix mille talents.

And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.

25 Mais comme il ne pouvait pas payer, son maître ordonna qu'il soit vendu, avec sa femme, ses enfants et tout ce qu'il possédait, et que le paiement soit effectué.

But as he had not ability to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.

26 Le serviteur se jeta donc à terre et s'agenouilla devant lui, en disant: « Seigneur, prends patience avec moi, et je te rendrai tout.

The servant therefore fell down, and worshiped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.

27 Le maître de ce serviteur, ému de compassion, le relâcha et lui remit la dette.

Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.

28 « Mais ce serviteur sortit et trouva un de ses compagnons de service qui lui devait cent deniers, il le saisit et le prit à la gorge en disant: « Paie-moi ce que tu dois! ».

But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow-servants, who owed him a hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took [him] by the throat, saying, Pay me what thou owest.

29 Son compagnon de service se jeta à ses pieds et le supplia en disant: « Prends patience avec moi, et je te rendrai la pareille.

And his fellow-servant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.

30 Il ne voulut pas, mais il alla le jeter en prison jusqu'à ce qu'il eût remboursé ce qui lui était dû.

And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.

31 Lorsque ses compagnons de service virent ce qui s'était passé, ils furent profondément désolés et vinrent raconter à leur maître tout ce qui s'était passé.

So when his fellow-servants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told to their lord all that was done.

32 Son maître le fit venir et lui dit: « Méchant serviteur! Je t'ai remis toute cette dette parce que tu m'as supplié.

Then his lord, having called him, said to him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:

33 Ne devais-tu pas avoir pitié de ton compagnon de service, comme j'ai eu pitié de toi?

Shouldst thou not also have had compassion on thy fellow-servant, even as I had pity on thee?

34 Son maître se mit en colère et le livra aux bourreaux jusqu'à ce qu'il paie tout ce qui lui était dû.

And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due to him.

35 C'est ainsi que mon Père céleste vous traitera aussi, si vous ne pardonnez pas chacun de votre cœur à votre frère pour ses méfaits. »

So likewise shall my heavenly Father do to you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.
