Luc 1
1 Puisque plusieurs ont entrepris de mettre en ordre le récit des événements qui se sont accomplis parmi nous,
Given that many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those things that really did take place among us,
2 comme nous l'ont transmis ceux qui, dès le début, ont été témoins oculaires et serviteurs de la parole,
just as those who became eyewitnesses, from the beginning, and ministers of the Word delivered them to us,
3 il m'a semblé bon, ayant dès le début suivi exactement le cours de toutes choses, de t'écrire avec ordre, très excellent Théophile,
it seemed good to me also, most excellent Theophilus, having taken careful note of everything from Above, to write to you with precision and in sequence,
4 afin que tu saches avec certitude les choses dans lesquelles tu as été instruit.
so that you may know the certainty of the things in which you were instructed.
5 Il y avait, du temps d'Hérode, roi de Judée, un prêtre nommé Zacharie, de la division sacerdotale d'Abija. Il avait une femme parmi les filles d'Aaron, et son nom était Élisabeth.
In the days of Herod, the king of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zacharias, of the priestly division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron and her name was Elizabeth.
6 Ils étaient tous deux justes devant Dieu, marchant sans reproche dans tous les commandements et ordonnances du Seigneur.
They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.
7 Mais ils n'eurent pas d'enfant, car Élisabeth était stérile, et ils étaient tous deux avancés en âge.
But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren; and they both were well advanced in years.
8 Or, tandis qu'il exerçait la fonction de prêtre devant Dieu selon l'ordre de sa division,
Now it happened, as he was officiating as priest before God in the order of his division,
9 selon la coutume de la fonction de prêtre, son lot était d'entrer dans le temple du Seigneur et d'y brûler des parfums.
according to the custom of the priesthood, that his lot was to burn incense, upon entering the sanctuary of the Lord;
10 Toute la multitude du peuple priait dehors à l'heure de l'encens.
and the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense.
11 Un ange du Seigneur lui apparut, se tenant à droite de l'autel des parfums.
Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense;
12 Zacharie fut troublé en le voyant, et la peur le saisit.
and upon seeing him Zacharias was shaken, and a fear fell upon him.
13 Mais l'ange lui dit: « Ne crains pas, Zacharie, car ta demande a été exaucée. Ta femme, Élisabeth, t'enfantera un fils, et tu lui donneras le nom de Jean.
But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, because your prayer was heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.
14 Tu auras de la joie et de l'allégresse, et beaucoup se réjouiront de sa naissance.
And you will have joy and exultation, and many will rejoice over his birth.
15 Car il sera grand aux yeux du Seigneur, et il ne boira ni vin ni boisson forte. Il sera rempli de l'Esprit Saint, dès le sein de sa mère.
For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; he must not drink either wine or strong drink; indeed, he will be filled with Holy Spirit already from his mother's womb.
16 Il ramènera beaucoup de fils d'Israël à l'Éternel, leur Dieu.
And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God;
17 Il le précédera avec l'esprit et la puissance d'Élie, pour ramener le cœur des pères vers les enfants, et les désobéissants à la sagesse des justes, afin de préparer un peuple à l'Éternel. »
in fact he himself will go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of fathers to children’ and the disobedient to the mindset of the righteous, to prepare a people made ready for the Lord.”
18 Zacharie dit à l'ange: « Comment puis-je en être sûr? Car je suis un vieil homme, et ma femme est bien avancée en âge. »
But Zacharias said to the angel: “How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”
19 L'ange lui répondit: « Je suis Gabriel, qui se tient dans la présence de Dieu. J'ai été envoyé pour te parler et t'annoncer cette bonne nouvelle.
So in answer the angel said to him: “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God; I was sent to speak to you and bring you this good news.
20 Voici, tu te tairas et tu ne pourras pas parler jusqu'au jour où ces choses arriveront, parce que tu n'as pas cru à mes paroles, qui s'accompliront en leur temps. »
Now look, you will be silent and not able to speak until the day in which these things happen, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”
21 Le peuple attendait Zacharie et s'étonnait qu'il tarde à entrer dans le temple.
Now the people were waiting for Zacharias and wondering at his delay in the sanctuary.
22 Lorsqu'il sortit, il ne put leur parler. Ils comprirent qu'il avait eu une vision dans le temple. Il continua à leur faire des signes, et il resta muet.
But when he came out he was unable to speak to them, and they understood that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary—he kept gesturing to them while remaining mute.
23 Lorsque les jours de son service furent accomplis, il s'en alla dans sa maison.
And so, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he took off for home.
24 Après ces jours-là, Élisabeth, sa femme, devint enceinte, et elle se cacha pendant cinq mois, en disant:
Well after those days his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and stayed in seclusion five months. She kept saying,
25 « C'est ainsi que le Seigneur m'a fait pendant les jours où il m'a regardée, pour ôter mon opprobre parmi les hommes. »
“So that's what the Lord has done for me in the days when He concerned Himself to take away my reproach among the people!”
26 Au sixième mois, l'ange Gabriel fut envoyé par Dieu dans une ville de Galilée, nommée Nazareth,
Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town of Galilee named Natsareth,
27 auprès d'une vierge promise en mariage à un homme du nom de Joseph, de la maison de David. Le nom de la vierge était Marie.
to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; the virgin's name was Mary.
28 Après être entré, l'ange lui dit: « Réjouis-toi, toi qui es si favorisée! Le Seigneur est avec toi. Tu es bénie entre toutes les femmes! »
So upon entering where she was the angel said, “Rejoice, recipient of grace, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”
29 Mais quand elle le vit, elle fut très troublée par cette parole, et elle réfléchit à la manière dont elle pouvait être saluée.
But upon seeing him she was perplexed at his word and was trying to figure out what sort of greeting it might be.
30 L'ange lui dit: « Ne crains pas, Marie, car tu as trouvé grâce devant Dieu.
The angel said to her: “Do not be afraid, Mary, because you have found favor with God.
31 Voici que tu concevras dans ton sein et tu donneras naissance à un fils, et tu lui donneras le nom de Jésus.
Now then, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS.
32 Il sera grand et on l'appellera le Fils du Très-Haut. Le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de son père David,
He will be great, and will be called ‘Son of the Most High’; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David,
33 et il régnera sur la maison de Jacob pour toujours. Il n'y aura pas de fin à son règne. » (aiōn g165)
and He will reign over the house of Jacob into the ages; indeed, of His kingdom there will be no end!” (aiōn g165)
34 Marie dit à l'ange: « Comment cela se peut-il, puisque je suis vierge? »
So Mary said to the angel, “How shall this be, since I do not know a man?”
35 L'ange lui répondit: « L'Esprit Saint viendra sur toi, et la puissance du Très-Haut te couvrira de son ombre. C'est pourquoi aussi le saint qui naîtra de toi sera appelé Fils de Dieu.
In answer the angel said to her: “Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will hover over you; precisely for this reason the holy One who is to be born will be called ‘Son of God’!
36 Voici qu'Élisabeth, ta parente, a conçu un fils dans sa vieillesse, et c'est le sixième mois de celle qu'on appelait stérile.
Furthermore, your relative Elizabeth, she has actually conceived a son in her old age and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren;
37 Car rien de ce qui est dit par Dieu n'est impossible. »
because any word spoken by God will be possible.”
38 Marie dit: « Voici la servante du Seigneur; qu'il me soit fait selon ta parole. » Puis l'ange s'éloigna d'elle.
So Mary said: “Yes, I am the Lord's slave! Let it happen to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
39 En ces jours-là, Marie se leva et se rendit en hâte dans la montagne, dans une ville de Juda,
Then Mary quickly got ready and went into the hill country in those days, to a town of Judah,
40 elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie et salua Elisabeth.
and entered the house of Zacharias and saluted Elizabeth.
41 Lorsqu'Elisabeth entendit la salutation de Marie, l'enfant tressaillit dans son sein, et Elisabeth fut remplie du Saint-Esprit.
Well it happened that as Elizabeth heard Mary's salutation the babe bounced up and down in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with Holy Spirit.
42 Elle cria d'une voix forte et dit: « Tu es bénie entre toutes les femmes, et le fruit de tes entrailles est béni!
And she cried out with a great voice and said: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the Fruit of your womb!
43 Pourquoi suis-je si favorisée, pour que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne à moi?
Why am I so favored that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 Car voici, quand la voix de ta salutation est parvenue à mes oreilles, le bébé a bondi de joie dans mon sein!
Yes indeed, because as the sound of your salutation came into my ears the babe bounced up and down in my womb for joy.
45 Heureuse celle qui a cru, car les choses qui lui ont été dites de la part du Seigneur s'accompliront! »
Blessed is she who believed, because there will be a fulfillment of the things that have been spoken to her from the Lord.”
46 Marie a dit, « Mon âme magnifie le Seigneur.
So Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 Mon esprit s'est réjoui en Dieu mon Sauveur,
and my spirit has exulted over God my Savior,
48 car il a regardé l'humble condition de son serviteur. Car voici qu'à partir de maintenant, toutes les générations me diront béni.
in that He paid attention to the humble station of His slave (f). Yes indeed, because from now on all generations will declare me to be highly favored,
49 Car celui qui est puissant a fait de grandes choses pour moi. Saint est son nom.
in that the Mighty One did sublime things for me, and Holy is His name.
50 Sa miséricorde s'étend de génération en génération sur ceux qui le craignent.
His mercy is for generations of generations to those fearing Him.
51 Il a montré de la force avec son bras. Il a dispersé les orgueilleux dans l'imagination de leur cœur.
He has done mighty deeds with His arm; He has dispersed the arrogant in the reasoning of their hearts.
52 Il a fait tomber les princes de leurs trônes, et a élevé les humbles.
He has dethroned rulers and exalted the lowly.
53 Il a rassasié de bonnes choses les affamés. Il a renvoyé les riches à vide.
He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty.
54 Il a secouru Israël, son serviteur, pour qu'il se souvienne de la miséricorde,
He has taken the part of His servant Israel, in remembrance of mercy,
just as He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed while there is an age.” (aiōn g165)
56 Marie resta avec elle environ trois mois, puis elle retourna dans sa maison.
So Mary stayed with her about three months, and returned to her house.
57 Le temps où Élisabeth devait accoucher s'accomplit, et elle donna naissance à un fils.
Now the time for Elizabeth to give birth was completed and she bore a son.
58 Ses voisins et ses proches apprirent que le Seigneur avait magnifié sa miséricorde envers elle, et ils se réjouirent avec elle.
Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had used His great mercy with her, and they rejoiced with her.
59 Le huitième jour, on vint pour circoncire l'enfant, et l'on voulut l'appeler Zacharie, du nom de son père.
So it was, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child, and they started calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias.
60 Sa mère répondit: « Non, mais on l'appellera Jean. »
His mother reacted and said, “Absolutely not; he shall be called John!”
61 Ils lui dirent: « Il n'y a personne parmi tes proches qui soit appelé de ce nom. »
So they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.”
62 Ils firent des signes à son père, pour savoir comment il voulait qu'on l'appelle.
So they started motioning to his father, as to what he would have him called.
63 Il demanda une tablette et écrivit: « Son nom est Jean. » Ils étaient tous émerveillés.
Asking for a writing tablet he wrote this: “His name is to be John!” They all marveled.
64 Aussitôt sa bouche s'ouvrit et sa langue se délia, et il parla en bénissant Dieu.
Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed and he started to speak, blessing God.
65 La crainte s'empara de tous les habitants des environs, et l'on parlait de toutes ces paroles dans toute la montagne de Judée.
(Well a fear came on all who lived around them; and all these sayings kept being talked about throughout all the hill country of Judea.
66 Tous ceux qui les entendaient les fixaient dans leur cœur, en disant: « Que sera donc cet enfant? » La main du Seigneur était avec lui.
All who heard kept them in their hearts saying, “What then will this child be?” And the hand of the Lord was with him.)
67 Son père Zacharie fut rempli du Saint-Esprit, et il prophétisa, disant,
Now his father Zacharias was filled with Holy Spirit and prophesied saying:
68 « Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël, car il a visité et racheté son peuple;
“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, because He has visited and provided redemption for His people;
69 et il nous a suscité une corne de salut dans la maison de son serviteur David.
and has raised up a horn of deliverance for us in the house of His servant David
70 (comme il l'a dit par la bouche de ses saints prophètes qui existent depuis des temps immémoriaux), (aiōn g165)
—just as He spoke through the mouth of His holy prophets from antiquity— (aiōn g165)
71 le salut de nos ennemis et de la main de tous ceux qui nous haïssent;
deliverance from our enemies and out of the hand of all who hate us;
72 pour faire preuve de clémence envers nos pères, pour se souvenir de sa sainte alliance,
to use mercy with our fathers, even to remember His Holy covenant,
73 le serment qu'il a fait à Abraham, notre père,
the oath that He swore to our father Abraham;
74 de nous accorder que, délivrés de la main de nos ennemis, doivent le servir sans crainte,
to grant to us (having been rescued from the hand of our enemies) to serve Him without fear,
75 dans la sainteté et la droiture devant lui tous les jours de notre vie.
in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.
76 Et toi, mon enfant, tu seras appelé prophète du Très-Haut; car tu iras devant la face du Seigneur pour préparer ses voies,
And you, child, will be called Prophet of the Most High, because you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways,
77 pour donner la connaissance du salut à son peuple par la rémission de ses péchés,
to give a knowledge of salvation to His people by the forgiveness of their sins,
78 à cause de la tendre miséricorde de notre Dieu, par lequel l'aube d'en haut nous visitera,
through the merciful compassions of our God, with which the divine Dawn has contemplated us,
79 pour éclairer ceux qui sont assis dans les ténèbres et l'ombre de la mort; pour guider nos pieds sur le chemin de la paix. »
to give light to those who are sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
80 L'enfant grandissait et devenait fort en esprit, et il était dans le désert jusqu'au jour de son apparition publique en Israël.
So the child kept growing and being strengthened in spirit, and he stayed in uninhabited areas until the day of his manifestation to Israel.
