Juges 8
1 Les hommes d'Éphraïm lui dirent: « Pourquoi nous as-tu traités de la sorte, en ne nous appelant pas quand tu es allé combattre Madian? » Ils le réprimandèrent vivement.
And the men of Ephraim said to Gedeon, What [is] this [that] you have done to us, in that you did not call us when you went to fight with Madiam? and they chode with him sharply.
2 Il leur répondit: « Qu'ai-je fait de plus que vous? La vendange d'Ephraïm ne vaut-elle pas mieux que celle d'Abiézer?
And he said to them, What have I now done in comparison of you? [is] not the gleaning of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?
3 Dieu a livré entre vos mains les princes de Madian, Oreb et Zeeb! Qu'ai-je pu faire en comparaison de toi? » Leur colère s'apaisa à son égard après qu'il eut dit cela.
The Lord has delivered into your hand the princes of Madiam, Oreb and Zeb; and what could I do in comparison of you? Then was their spirit calmed toward him, when he spoke this word.
4 Gédéon arriva au Jourdain et le traversa, lui et les trois cents hommes qui étaient avec lui, faibles mais poursuivant.
And Gedeon came to Jordan, and went over, himself and the three hundred with him, hungry, yet pursuing.
5 Il dit aux hommes de Succoth: « Donnez, je vous prie, des pains aux gens qui me suivent, car ils sont épuisés, et je poursuis Zébah et Tsalmunna, les rois de Madian. »
And he said to the men of Socchoth, Give, I pray you, bread to feed this people that follow me; because they are faint, and behold, I am following after Zebee and Salmana, kings of Madiam.
6 Les princes de Succoth dirent: « Les mains de Zébah et de Tsalmunna sont-elles maintenant entre tes mains, pour que nous donnions du pain à ton armée? »
And the princes of Socchoth said, [Are] the hands of Zebee and Salmana now in your hand, that we should give bread to your host?
7 Gédéon dit: « C'est pourquoi, lorsque Yahvé aura livré entre mes mains Zébah et Tsalmunna, je déchirerai votre chair avec les épines du désert et avec les ronces. »
And Gedeon said, Therefore when the Lord gives Zebee and Salmana into my hand, then will I tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness, and the Barkenim.
8 Il monta ensuite à Penuel, et leur parla de la même manière. Les hommes de Penuel lui répondirent comme les hommes de Succoth avaient répondu.
And he went up thence to Phanuel, and spoke to them likewise: and the men of Phanuel answered him as the men of Socchoth [had] answered him.
9 Il parla aussi aux hommes de Penuel, en disant: « Quand je reviendrai en paix, je démolirai cette tour. »
And Gedeon said to the men of Phanuel, When I return in peace, I will break down this tower.
10 Or Zébah et Tsalmunna étaient à Karkor, et leurs armées avec eux, environ quinze mille hommes, tous ceux qui restaient de toute l'armée des fils de l'Orient; car il tomba cent vingt mille hommes qui tirèrent l'épée.
And Zebee and Salmana [were] in Carcar, and their host [was] with them, about fifteen thousand, all that were left of all the host of the aliens; and they that fell [were] a hundred and twenty thousand men that drew the sword.
11 Gédéon monta par le chemin de ceux qui habitaient dans des tentes à l'est de Nobah et de Jogbehah, et il frappa l'armée; car l'armée se sentait en sécurité.
And Gedeon went up by the way of them that lived in tents, eastward of Nabai and Jegebal; and he struck the host, and the host was secure.
12 Zébah et Tsalmunna s'enfuirent et il les poursuivit. Il prit les deux rois de Madian, Zébah et Tsalmunna, et confondit toute l'armée.
And Zebee and Salmana fled; and he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Madiam, Zebee and Salmana, and discomfited all the army.
13 Gédéon, fils de Joas, revint de la bataille par la montée de Hérès.
And Gedeon the son of Joas returned from the battle, down from the battle of Ares.
14 Il prit un jeune homme parmi les hommes de Succoth, et le consulta; il lui décrivit les chefs de Succoth et ses anciens, soit soixante-dix-sept hommes.
And he took prisoner a young lad of the men of Socchoth, and questioned him; and he wrote to him the names of the princes of Socchoth and of their elders, seventy-seven men.
15 Il s'approcha des hommes de Succoth et dit: « Voyez Zébah et Tsalmunna, au sujet desquels vous m'avez raillé en disant: « Les mains de Zébah et de Tsalmunna sont-elles maintenant entre vos mains, pour que nous donnions du pain à vos hommes qui sont fatigués? ».
And Gedeon came to the princes of Socchoth, and said, Behold Zebee and Salmana, about whom you reproached me, saying, [Are] the hands of Zebee and Salmana now in your hand, that we should give bread to your men that are faint?
16 Il prit les anciens de la ville, des épines du désert et des ronces, et avec eux il enseigna aux hommes de Succoth.
And he took the elders of the city with the thorns of the wilderness and the Barkenim, and with them he tore the men of the city.
17 Il démolit la tour de Penuel, et il tua les hommes de la ville.
And he overthrew the tower of Phanuel, and killed the men of the city.
18 Puis il dit à Zébah et à Tsalmunna: « Quelle sorte d'hommes étaient ceux que vous avez tués au Thabor? » Ils répondirent: « Ils étaient comme vous. Ils ressemblaient tous aux enfants d'un roi. »
And he said to Zebee and Salmana, Where [are] the men whom you killed in Thabor? and they said, As you, so [were] they, according to the likeness of the son of a king.
19 Il répondit: « Ce sont mes frères, les fils de ma mère. L'Éternel est vivant, si tu les avais sauvés vivants, je ne te tuerais pas. »
And Gedeon said, They were my brethren and the sons of my mother: [as] the Lord lives, if you had preserved them alive, I would not have slain you.
20 Il dit à Jether, son aîné: « Lève-toi et tue-les! » Mais le jeune homme ne tira pas son épée, car il avait peur, car il était encore jeune.
And he said to Jether his firstborn, Rise and kill them; but the lad drew not his sword, for he was afraid, for he was yet very young.
21 Alors Zébah et Tsalmunna dirent: « Vous vous levez et vous tombez sur nous; car telle est la force de l'homme, telle est sa force. » Gédéon se leva, tua Zébah et Tsalmunna, et prit les croissants qui étaient au cou de leurs chameaux.
And Zebee and Salmana said, Rise you and fall upon us, for your power [is] as that of a man; and Gedeon arose, and killed Zebee and Salmana: and he took the round ornaments that were on the necks of their camels.
22 Alors les hommes d'Israël dirent à Gédéon: « Domine sur nous, toi, ton fils et le fils de ton fils aussi, car tu nous as sauvés de la main de Madian. »
And the men of Israel said to Gedeon, Rule, [my] lord, over us, both you, and your son, and your son's son; for you have saved us out of the hand of Madiam.
23 Gédéon leur dit: « Je ne dominerai pas sur vous, et mon fils ne dominera pas sur vous. C'est Yahvé qui dominera sur vous. »
And Gedeon said to them, I will not rule, and my son shall not rule among you; the Lord shall rule over you.
24 Gédéon leur dit: « J'ai une demande à faire: que chacun de vous me donne les boucles d'oreille de son butin. » (Car ils avaient des boucles d'oreilles en or, parce qu'ils étaient Ismaélites).
And Gedeon said to them, I will make a request of you, and do you give me every man an earring out of his spoils: for they had golden earrings, for they were Ismaelites.
25 Ils répondirent: « Nous les donnerons volontiers. » Ils étendirent un vêtement, et chacun y jeta les boucles d'oreilles de son butin.
And they said, We will certainly give them: and he opened his garment, and each man cast therein an earring of his spoils.
26 Le poids des boucles d'oreilles en or qu'il demanda était de mille sept cents sicles d'or, sans compter les croissants, les pendentifs, les vêtements de pourpre qui étaient sur les rois de Madian, et sans compter les chaînes qui étaient au cou de leurs chameaux.
And the weight of the golden earrings which he asked, was a thousand and seven hundred pieces of gold, besides the crescents, and the chains, and the garments, and the purple cloths that were on the kings of Madiam, and besides the chains that were on the necks of their camels.
27 Gédéon en fit un éphod, et le mit à Ophra, sa ville. Tout Israël s'y prostitua, et ce fut un piège pour Gédéon et pour sa maison.
And Gedeon made an ephod of it, an set it in his city in Ephratha; and all Israel went there a whoring after it, and it became a stumbling block to Gedeon and his house.
28 Ainsi Madian fut soumis aux enfants d'Israël, et ils ne levèrent plus la tête. Le pays fut en repos pendant quarante ans aux jours de Gédéon.
And Madiam, was straitened before the children of Israel, and they did not lift up their head any more; and the land had rest forty years in the days of Gedeon.
29 Jerubbaal, fils de Joas, s'en alla et s'établit dans sa maison.
And Jerobaal the son of Joas went and sat in his house.
30 Gédéon eut soixante-dix fils conçus de son corps, car il avait beaucoup de femmes.
And Gedeon had seventy sons begotten of his body, for he had many wives.
31 Sa concubine qui était à Sichem lui enfanta aussi un fils, et il l'appela Abimélec.
And his concubine was in Sychem, and she also bore him a son, and gave him the name Abimelech.
32 Gédéon, fils de Joas, mourut dans une bonne vieillesse, et il fut enterré dans le tombeau de Joas, son père, à Ophra, chez les Abiézrites.
And Gedeon son of Joas died in his city, and he was buried in the sepulchre of Joas his father in Ephratha of Abi-Esdri.
33 Dès que Gédéon fut mort, les enfants d'Israël se retournèrent, se prostituèrent aux Baals et firent de Baal Berith leur dieu.
And it came to pass when Gedeon was dead, that the children of Israel turned, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made for themselves a covenant with Baal that he should be their god.
34 Les enfants d'Israël ne se souvinrent pas de Yahvé, leur Dieu, qui les avait délivrés de la main de tous leurs ennemis de toute part;
And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God who had delivered them out of the hand of all that afflicted them round about.
35 et ils ne firent pas preuve de bonté envers la maison de Jerubbaal, c'est-à-dire Gédéon, selon toute la bonté qu'il avait montrée à Israël.
And they did not deal mercifully with the house of Jerobaal, (the same is Gedeon) according to all the good which he did to Israel.
