Juges 7
1 Et Jerubbaal, qui est Gédéon, et tout le peuple qui était avec lui, se levèrent de bonne heure et campèrent près de la source de Harod. Le camp de Madian était au nord, près de la colline de Moreh, dans la vallée.
Then Jerubbaal, the same, is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and encamped by the fountain of Harod, —and, the camp of Midian, was on the north of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the vale.
2 Yahvé dit à Gédéon: « Le peuple qui est avec toi est trop nombreux pour que je livre les Madianites entre leurs mains, de peur qu'Israël ne se vante de moi en disant: « Ma propre main m'a sauvé ».
And Yahweh said unto Gideon, Too many, are the people that are with thee, for me to deliver the Midianites into their hand, —lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand, hath saved me.
3 Maintenant, proclame aux oreilles du peuple: « Que celui qui a peur et qui tremble s'en retourne et s'éloigne de la montagne de Galaad ». Ainsi, vingt-deux mille personnes du peuple s'en retournèrent, et dix mille restèrent.
Now, therefore, proclaim, I pray thee, in the ears of the people, saying, Whoso feareth and trembleth—let him turn and go back from Mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty-two thousand, and, ten thousand, remained.
4 Yahvé dit à Gédéon: « Il y a encore trop de monde. Fais-les descendre jusqu'à l'eau, et là, je les mettrai à l'épreuve pour toi. Ceux à qui je dirai: « Ceci ira avec vous » iront avec vous, et ceux à qui je dirai: « Ceci n'ira pas avec vous » n'iront pas. »
Then said Yahweh unto Gideon—Yet, are the people too many, take them down unto the waters, that I may prove them for thee, there, —and it shall be, that, he of whom I say unto thee, This one, shall go with thee, the same, shall go with thee, and, every one of whom I say unto thee, This one, shall not go with thee, the same, shall not go.
5 Il fit donc descendre le peuple vers l'eau, et Yahvé dit à Gédéon: « Si quelqu'un lèche l'eau avec sa langue, comme un chien, tu le mettras à part, et si quelqu'un s'agenouille pour boire, tu le mettras à part. »
So he took down the people unto the waters, —and Yahweh said unto Gideon—Every one that lappeth with his tongue of the water, as a dog lappeth, thou shalt set him by himself, likewise, every one that boweth down upon his knees, to drink.
6 Le nombre de ceux qui laperont l'eau, en portant la main à la bouche, sera de trois cents hommes; mais tout le reste du peuple se prosternera à genoux pour boire l'eau.
And so it was, that, the number of them that lapped with their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men, —but, all the rest of the people, bowed down on their knees, to drink water.
7 Yahvé dit à Gédéon: « Je te sauverai par les trois cents hommes qui ont lapé, et je livrerai les Madianites entre tes mains. Laisse partir tout le reste du peuple, chacun à sa place. »
Then said Yahweh unto Gideon—By the three hundred men that lapped, will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thy hand; and let, all [the rest of] the people, go every man to his own place.
8 Et le peuple prit en main de la nourriture et ses trompettes; et il envoya tous les autres hommes d'Israël dans leurs tentes, mais il garda les trois cents hommes; et le camp de Madian était au-dessous de lui dans la vallée.
So the people took provisions in their hand, and their horns, but, every man of Israel besides, sent he away every man to his home, whereas, the three hundred men, he retained. Now, the camp of Midian, was beneath him in the vale.
9 Cette même nuit, Yahvé lui dit: « Lève-toi, descends dans le camp, car je l'ai livré entre tes mains.
And it came to pass, on that night, that Yahweh said unto him, Arise! go down against the camp, —for I have delivered it into thy hand.
10 Mais si tu as peur de descendre, descends au camp avec Purah, ton serviteur.
Or, if, thou, art afraid to go down, go down—thou and Purah thy young man, unto the camp;
11 Tu entendras ce qu'ils diront, et tes mains seront fortifiées pour descendre au camp. » Et il descendit avec Purah, son serviteur, jusqu'à l'extrémité des hommes armés qui étaient dans le camp.
so shalt thou hear what they shall say, —and, afterward, shall thy hands grow strong, and thou shalt go down against the camp. Then went he down, he and Purah his young man, unto the outmost part of the armed men that were in the camp.
12 Les Madianites et les Amalécites, et tous les fils de l'Orient, étaient couchés dans la vallée comme des sauterelles, en grand nombre; et leurs chameaux étaient innombrables, comme le sable qui est au bord de la mer, en grand nombre.
Now, the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the sons of the east, were lying along in the vale, like locusts for multitude, —their camels also, were without number, as the sand that is by the sea side, for multitude.
13 Lorsque Gédéon arriva, voici qu'un homme racontait un rêve à son compagnon. Il dit: « Voici, j'ai eu un songe; et voici, un gâteau de pain d'orge est tombé dans le camp de Madian, est venu jusqu'à la tente, l'a frappée de telle sorte qu'elle est tombée, et l'a retournée, de sorte que la tente est restée à plat. »
And Gideon came in, and lo! a man relating to his neighbour a dream, —and he said—Lo! a dream, have I dreamt, and lo! a round cake of barley bread tumbling into the camp of Midian, and it came as far as the tent—and smote it that it fell, and turned it upside down, and the tent lay along.
14 Son compagnon répondit: « Ce n'est autre que l'épée de Gédéon, fils de Joas, homme d'Israël. Dieu a livré Madian entre ses mains, avec toute son armée. »
Then responded his neighbour and said: —Nothing else, is this, than the sword of Gideon son of Joash, a man of Israel, —God hath delivered into his hand, both Midian and all the host.
15 Lorsque Gédéon entendit le récit du rêve et son interprétation, il se prosterna. Puis il revint dans le camp d'Israël et dit: « Levez-vous, car Yahvé a livré entre vos mains l'armée de Madian! »
And it was so, when Gideon heard the story of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he bowed himself down, —and returned unto the camp of Israel, and said—Arise! for Yahweh hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.
16 Il divisa les trois cents hommes en trois compagnies, et il mit entre les mains de chacun d'eux des trompettes et des cruches vides, avec des torches dans les cruches.
And he divided the three hundred men, into three companies, —and put horns into the hands of them all, with empty pitchers, and torches inside the pitchers.
17 Il leur dit: « Observez-moi, et faites de même. Voici, quand j'arriverai à l'extrémité du camp, vous ferez ce que je fais.
Then he said unto them, On me, shall ye look, and, in like manner, shall ye do, —and lo! when I am coming unto the outermost part of the camp, then shall it be, that, as I do, so, shall ye do.
18 Quand je sonnerai de la trompette, moi et tous ceux qui sont avec moi, vous sonnerez aussi des trompettes de tous les côtés de tout le camp, et vous crierez: « Pour l'Éternel et pour Gédéon ».
When I shall blow with the horn, I and all who are with me, then shall, ye also, round about all the camp, blow with your horns, and shall say, For Yahweh and for Gideon!
19 Et Gédéon et les cent hommes qui étaient avec lui arrivèrent à l'extrémité du camp, au commencement de la veille du milieu, quand on venait de commencer la veille. Ils sonnèrent des trompettes et brisèrent les cruches qu'ils avaient à la main.
So Gideon came, and the hundred men that were with him, unto the outermost part of the camp, at the beginning of the middle watch, they had but, newly set, the watchers, —and they blew with the horns, and brake in pieces the pitchers, that were in their hand.
20 Les trois corps d'armée sonnèrent des trompettes, brisèrent les cruches, tinrent dans leur main gauche les torches et dans leur main droite les trompettes avec lesquelles ils sonnaient, et ils crièrent: « L'épée de Yahvé et de Gédéon ».
Yea the three companies blew with the horns, and shivered the pitchers, and caught hold—with their left hands—of the torches, while, in their right hands, were the horns, to blow with, —and they cried, A sword for Yahweh, and for Gideon!
21 Ils se tinrent chacun à sa place autour du camp, et toute l'armée accourut; ils crièrent et les mirent en fuite.
And they stood still, every man in his place, round about the camp, —and all the host ran and shouted, and fled.
22 On sonna des trois cents trompettes, et l'Éternel mit l'épée de chacun contre son compagnon et contre toute l'armée; et l'armée s'enfuit jusqu'à Beth Shittah, vers Zérach, jusqu'à la frontière d'Abel Meholah, vers Tabbath.
When the three hundred blew the horns, Yahweh set the sword of every man, against his neighbour, and against all the host, —and the host fled, as far as the Place of Acacias, towards Zererath, as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath.
23 Les hommes d'Israël se rassemblèrent de Nephtali, d'Aser et de tout Manassé, et ils poursuivirent Madian.
And the men of Israel were called together, out of Naphtali and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, —and pursued Midian.
24 Gédéon envoya des messagers dans toute la montagne d'Éphraïm, en disant: « Descendez contre Madian, et prenez les eaux devant eux jusqu'à Beth Bara, jusqu'au Jourdain. » Tous les hommes d'Ephraïm se rassemblèrent donc et prirent les eaux jusqu'à Beth Bara, le Jourdain.
And, messengers, did Gideon send through all the hill country of Ephraim, saying—Go down to meet Midian, and capture, before them, the waters, as far as Beth-barah, and the Jordan. So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and captured the waters, as far as Beth-barah, and the Jordan.
25 Ils prirent les deux princes de Madian, Oreb et Zeeb. Ils tuèrent Oreb au rocher d'Oreb, et ils tuèrent Zeeb au pressoir de Zeeb, pendant qu'ils poursuivaient Madian. Puis ils apportèrent les têtes d'Oreb et de Zeeb à Gédéon, de l'autre côté du Jourdain.
And they captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, and slew Oreb at Oreb’s Rock, and, Zeeb, they slew at Zeeb’s Winepress, and pursued Midian, —and, the heads of Oreb and Zeeb, brought they in unto Gideon at the ford of the Jordan.
