Juges 3
1 Voici les nations que l'Éternel laissa pour mettre Israël à l'épreuve par elles, tous ceux qui n'avaient pas connu toutes les guerres de Canaan,
Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to test Israel by them, even as many as had not known all the wars of Canaan;
2 afin que les générations des enfants d'Israël le sachent, pour leur apprendre la guerre, du moins à ceux qui ne l'avaient pas connue auparavant:
only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at least those who knew nothing of it before:
3 les cinq princes des Philistins, tous les Cananéens, les Sidoniens et les Héviens qui habitaient la montagne du Liban, depuis la montagne de Baal Hermon jusqu'à l'entrée de Hamath.
the five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath.
4 On les laissa pour éprouver Israël par eux, afin de savoir s'ils écouteraient les commandements de l'Éternel, qu'il avait prescrits à leurs pères par Moïse.
They were left to test Israel by them, to know whether they would listen to the LORD’s commandments, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.
5 Les enfants d'Israël habitaient parmi les Cananéens, les Hittites, les Amorites, les Perizzites, les Hivvites et les Jébusites.
The children of Israel lived amongst the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
6 Ils prirent leurs filles pour femmes, donnèrent leurs propres filles à leurs fils et servirent leurs dieux.
They took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods.
7 Les enfants d'Israël firent ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, ils oublièrent l'Éternel, leur Dieu, et servirent les Baals et les Ashéroths.
The children of Israel did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight, and forgot the LORD their God, and served the Baals and the Asheroth.
8 La colère de l'Éternel s'enflamma contre Israël, et il les vendit entre les mains de Cushan Rishathaim, roi de Mésopotamie; les enfants d'Israël furent au service de Cushan Rishathaim pendant huit ans.
Therefore the LORD’s anger burnt against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan Rishathaim eight years.
9 Lorsque les enfants d'Israël crièrent à l'Éternel, l'Éternel suscita aux enfants d'Israël un sauveur qui les sauva, Othniel, fils de Kenaz, frère cadet de Caleb.
When the children of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a saviour to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
10 L'Esprit de Yahvé descendit sur lui, et il jugea Israël. Il partit en guerre, et Yahvé livra entre ses mains Cushan Rishathaim, roi de Mésopotamie. Sa main l'emporta sur Cushan Rishathaim.
The LORD’s Spirit came on him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and the LORD delivered Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. His hand prevailed against Cushan Rishathaim.
11 Le pays fut en repos pendant quarante ans, puis Othniel, fils de Kenaz, mourut.
The land had rest forty years, then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
12 Les enfants d'Israël firent encore ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, et l'Éternel fortifia Églon, roi de Moab, contre Israël, parce qu'ils avaient fait ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel.
The children of Israel again did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight, and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the LORD’s sight.
13 Il rassembla à lui les fils d'Ammon et d'Amalek, et il alla frapper Israël, et ils possédèrent la ville des palmiers.
He gathered the children of Ammon and Amalek to himself; and he went and struck Israel, and they possessed the city of palm trees.
14 Les enfants d'Israël servirent Églon, roi de Moab, pendant dix-huit ans.
The children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
15 Mais lorsque les enfants d'Israël crièrent à Yahvé, Yahvé leur suscita un sauveur: Ehud, fils de Gera, le Benjamite, un gaucher. Les enfants d'Israël envoyèrent par lui un tribut à Eglon, roi de Moab.
But when the children of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a saviour for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. The children of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.
16 Ehud se fabriqua une épée à deux tranchants, longue d'une coudée, qu'il porta sous ses vêtements, sur sa cuisse droite.
Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he wore it under his clothing on his right thigh.
17 Il offrit le tribut à Églon, roi de Moab. Or Églon était un homme très gras.
He offered the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.
18 Quand Ehud eut fini d'offrir le tribut, il renvoya les gens qui portaient le tribut.
When Ehud had finished offering the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute.
19 Mais lui-même s'éloigna des idoles de pierre qui se trouvaient près de Gilgal et dit: « J'ai un message secret pour toi, ô roi. » Le roi dit: « Tais-toi! » Tous ceux qui se tenaient près de lui le quittèrent.
But he himself turned back from the stone idols that were by Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” The king said, “Keep silence!” All who stood by him left him.
20 Ehud vint le trouver, et il était assis seul dans la chambre haute et fraîche. Ehud dit: « J'ai un message de Dieu pour toi. » Il se leva de son siège.
Ehud came to him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. Ehud said, “I have a message from God to you.” He arose out of his seat.
21 Ehud étendit sa main gauche, prit l'épée de sa cuisse droite et se la planta dans le corps.
Ehud put out his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body.
22 La poignée entra aussi après la lame; et la graisse se referma sur la lame, car il n'avait pas retiré l'épée de son corps; et elle sortit par derrière.
The handle also went in after the blade; and the fat closed on the blade, for he didn’t draw the sword out of his body; and it came out behind.
23 Ehud sortit sur le portique, ferma sur lui les portes de la chambre haute et les verrouilla.
Then Ehud went out onto the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room on him, and locked them.
24 Après qu'il fut parti, ses serviteurs vinrent et virent que les portes de la chambre haute étaient fermées. Ils dirent: « Il est sûrement en train de se couvrir les pieds dans la chambre haute. »
After he had gone, his servants came and saw that the doors of the upper room were locked. They said, “Surely he is covering his feet in the upper room.”
25 Ils attendirent jusqu'à ce qu'ils aient honte; et voici qu'il n'ouvrait pas les portes de la chambre haute. Ils prirent donc la clé et les ouvrirent, et voici que leur seigneur était tombé mort sur le sol.
They waited until they were ashamed; and behold, he didn’t open the doors of the upper room. Therefore they took the key and opened them, and behold, their lord had fallen down dead on the floor.
26 Ehud s'échappa pendant qu'ils attendaient, passa au-delà des idoles de pierre et se sauva à Seirah.
Ehud escaped while they waited, passed beyond the stone idols, and escaped to Seirah.
27 Lorsqu'il fut arrivé, il sonna de la trompette dans la montagne d'Ephraïm; les enfants d'Israël descendirent avec lui de la montagne, et il les conduisit.
When he had come, he blew a shofar in the hill country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he led them.
28 Il leur dit: « Suivez-moi, car Yahvé a livré entre vos mains les Moabites, vos ennemis. » Ils le suivirent et prirent les gués du Jourdain contre les Moabites, et ne permirent à aucun homme de passer.
He said to them, “Follow me; for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” They followed him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and didn’t allow any man to pass over.
29 Ils frappèrent en ce temps-là environ dix mille hommes de Moab, tous les hommes forts et tous les hommes valeureux. Aucun homme n'échappa.
They struck at that time about ten thousand men of Moab, every strong man and every man of valour. No man escaped.
30 Moab fut donc soumis en ce jour sous la main d'Israël. Et le pays fut en repos pendant quatre-vingts ans.
So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. Then the land had rest eighty years.
31 Après lui, Shamgar, fils d'Anath, frappa six cents hommes des Philistins avec un aiguillon à bœuf. Il sauva aussi Israël.
After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad. He also saved Israel.
