Juges 21
1 Les hommes d'Israël avaient juré à Mitspa, en disant: « Aucun de nous ne donnera sa fille pour femme à Benjamin. »
And the men of Israel have sworn in Mizpeh, saying, “None of us gives his daughter to Benjamin for a wife.”
2 Le peuple vint à Béthel et s'assit jusqu'au soir devant Dieu; il éleva la voix et pleura abondamment.
And the people come to Beth-El, and sit there until the evening before God, and lift up their voice, and weep [with] a great weeping,
3 Ils dirent: « Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël, pourquoi cela est-il arrivé en Israël, qu'il manque aujourd'hui une tribu en Israël? »
and say, “Why, O YHWH, God of Israel, has this been in Israel—to be lacking one tribe from Israel today?”
4 Le lendemain, le peuple se leva de bonne heure, construisit un autel à cet endroit, et offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices de prospérité.
And it comes to pass on the next day, that the people rise early, and build an altar there, and cause burnt-offerings and peace-offerings to ascend.
5 Les enfants d'Israël dirent: « Qui est, parmi toutes les tribus d'Israël, celui qui n'est pas monté à l'assemblée vers l'Éternel? » Car ils avaient fait un grand serment au sujet de celui qui n'était pas monté vers l'Éternel à Mitspa, en disant: « Il sera certainement mis à mort. »
And the sons of Israel say, “Who [is] he that has not come up in the assembly to YHWH out of all the tribes of Israel?” For the great oath has been concerning him who has not come up to YHWH to Mizpeh, saying, “He is surely put to death.”
6 Les enfants d'Israël s'affligèrent pour Benjamin, leur frère, et dirent: « Il y a aujourd'hui une tribu retranchée d'Israël.
And the sons of Israel sigh concerning their brother Benjamin, and say, “Today there has been one tribe cut off from Israel,
7 Comment fournirons-nous des femmes à ceux qui restent, puisque nous avons juré par l'Éternel de ne pas leur donner de nos filles pour femmes? »
what do we do for them—for those who are left—for wives, since we have sworn by YHWH not to give to them from our daughters for wives?”
8 Ils dirent: « Quel est celui des tribus d'Israël qui n'est pas monté vers l'Éternel à Mitspa? » Voici, personne n'est venu de Jabesh Galaad au camp, pour l'assemblée.
And they say, “Who is [that] one out of the tribes of Israel who has not come up to YHWH to Mizpeh?” And behold, none has come to the camp from Jabesh-Gilead—to the assembly.
9 Car lorsqu'on fit le compte du peuple, voici, il n'y avait là aucun des habitants de Jabesh Galaad.
And the people numbered themselves, and behold, there is no man from the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead.
10 L'assemblée y envoya douze mille hommes parmi les plus vaillants, et leur donna cet ordre: « Allez frapper du tranchant de l'épée les habitants de Jabesh Galaad, les femmes et les petits enfants.
And the congregation sends twelve thousand men of the sons of valor there, and commands them, saying, “Go—and you have struck the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead by the mouth of the sword, even the women and the infants.
11 Voici ce que vous ferez: vous détruirez par interdit tout mâle et toute femme qui a couché avec un homme. »
And this [is] the thing which you do; every male, and every woman knowing the lying of a male, you devote.”
12 Ils trouvèrent parmi les habitants de Jabesh Galaad quatre cents jeunes vierges qui n'avaient pas connu l'homme en couchant avec lui, et ils les amenèrent au camp à Silo, qui est au pays de Canaan.
And they find four hundred young women, virgins, out of the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead, who have not known man by the lying of a male, and they bring them to the camp at Shiloh, which [is] in the land of Canaan.
13 Toute l'assemblée envoya parler aux fils de Benjamin qui étaient au rocher de Rimmon, et leur annonça la paix.
And all the congregation sends [word] and speaks to the sons of Benjamin who [are] in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaims peace to them;
14 Benjamin revint à ce moment-là, et ils leur donnèrent les femmes qu'ils avaient sauvées vivantes parmi les femmes de Jabesh Galaad. Il n'y en avait toujours pas assez pour eux.
and Benjamin turns back at that time, and they give to them the women whom they have kept alive of the women of Jabesh-Gilead, and they have not found for [all of] them so.
15 Le peuple s'affligea pour Benjamin, car Yahvé avait fait une brèche dans les tribus d'Israël.
And the people sighed concerning Benjamin, for YHWH had made a breach among the tribes of Israel.
16 Les anciens de l'assemblée dirent: « Comment pourrions-nous fournir des femmes à ceux qui restent, puisque les femmes sont détruites hors de Benjamin? »
And [the] elderly of the congregation say, “What do we do to the remnant for wives—for the women have been destroyed out of Benjamin?”
17 Ils dirent: « Il faut qu'il y ait un héritage pour ceux qui sont échappés de Benjamin, afin qu'une tribu ne soit pas effacée d'Israël.
And they say, “A possession of an escaped party [is] to Benjamin, and a tribe is not blotted out from Israel;
18 Mais nous ne pouvons pas leur donner des femmes de nos filles, car les enfants d'Israël ont juré en disant: « Maudit soit celui qui donne une femme à Benjamin. »
and we are not able to give wives to them out of our daughters, for the sons of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed [is] he who is giving a wife to Benjamin.”
19 Ils dirent: « Voici qu'il y a une fête de l'Éternel d'année en année à Silo, qui est au nord de Béthel, à l'est de la route qui monte de Béthel à Sichem, et au sud de Lebona. »
And they say, “Behold, a festival of YHWH [is] in Shiloh, from time to time, which [is] on the north of Beth-El, at the rising of the sun, by the highway which is going up from Beth-El to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.”
20 Ils donnèrent cet ordre aux fils de Benjamin: « Allez vous poster dans les vignes,
And they command the sons of Benjamin, saying, “Go—and you have laid wait in the vineyards,
21 et regardez, et voici, si les filles de Silo sortent pour danser dans les bals, sortez des vignes, prenez chacun sa femme parmi les filles de Silo, et allez au pays de Benjamin.
and have seen, and behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances—then you have gone out from the vineyards, and each caught his wife out of the daughters of Shiloh for yourselves, and have gone to the land of Benjamin;
22 Lorsque leurs pères ou leurs frères viendront se plaindre à nous, nous leur dirons: « Accordez-nous leur grâce, car nous n'avons pas pris pour chacun sa femme dans la bataille, et vous ne les leur avez pas données, sinon vous seriez maintenant coupables. »
and it has been, when their fathers or their brothers come in to plead to us, that we have said to them, Favor us [by] them, for we have not each taken his wife in battle, for you have not given [wives] to them at this time, [so] you are [not] guilty.”
23 Les fils de Benjamin firent de même et prirent des femmes selon leur nombre, de celles qui dansaient et qu'ils enlevèrent. Ils partirent et retournèrent dans leur héritage, bâtirent les villes et y habitèrent.
And the sons of Benjamin do so, and take women according to their number, out of the dancers whom they have seized; and they go, and return to their inheritance, and build the cities, and dwell in them.
24 En ce temps-là, les enfants d'Israël partirent de là, chacun dans sa tribu et dans sa famille, et ils s'en allèrent chacun dans son héritage.
And the sons of Israel go up and down there at that time, each to his tribe, and to his family; and they each go out there to his inheritance.
25 En ce temps-là, il n'y avait pas de roi en Israël. Chacun faisait ce qui était juste à ses propres yeux.
In those days there is no king in Israel; each does that which is right in his own eyes.
