Juges 2
1 L'ange de Yahvé monta de Gilgal à Bochim. Il dit: « Je vous ai fait sortir d'Égypte et je vous ai conduits dans le pays que j'avais juré de donner à vos pères. J'ai dit: « Je ne romprai jamais mon alliance avec vous.
And a messenger of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, And he said, I caused you to go up out of Egypt, and I brought you unto the land which I had sworn unto your fathers; and I said, I will not break my covenant with you for ever.
2 Vous ne ferez aucune alliance avec les habitants de ce pays. Vous démolirez leurs autels. Mais vous n'avez pas écouté ma voix. Pourquoi avez-vous fait cela?
But ye for your part shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; their altars shall ye throw down; but ye have not obeyed my voice: what is this ye have done?
3 C'est pourquoi j'ai dit: « Je ne les chasserai pas de devant toi, mais ils seront dans ton camp, et leurs dieux seront pour toi un piège. »
And I also have said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be evil neighbors to you, and their gods shall become a snare unto you.
4 Lorsque l'ange de Yahvé eut prononcé ces paroles devant tous les enfants d'Israël, le peuple éleva la voix et pleura.
And it came to pass, when the messenger of the Lord spoke these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
5 Ils appelèrent le nom de ce lieu Bochim, et ils y sacrifièrent à l'Éternel.
And they called the name of that place, Bochim; and they sacrificed there unto the Lord.
6 Lorsque Josué eut renvoyé le peuple, les enfants d'Israël allèrent chacun dans son héritage pour prendre possession du pays.
And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to take possession of the land.
7 Le peuple servit l'Éternel pendant toute la vie de Josué et pendant toute la vie des anciens qui survécurent à Josué et qui avaient vu toute la grande œuvre de l'Éternel en faveur d'Israël.
And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that lived many days after Joshua, who had seen all the great deeds of the Lord, which he had done for Israel.
8 Josué, fils de Nun, serviteur de l'Éternel, mourut, âgé de cent dix ans.
Then died Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, being one hundred and ten years old.
9 On l'enterra dans le territoire de son héritage, à Timnath Hérès, dans la montagne d'Ephraïm, au nord de la montagne de Gaash.
And they buried him on the border of his inheritance in Timnath-cheres, in the mountain of Ephraim, on the north side of mount Ga'ash.
10 Après que toute cette génération eut été recueillie auprès de ses pères, il se leva après elle une autre génération qui ne connaissait pas l'Éternel ni l'œuvre qu'il avait faite pour Israël.
And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers; and there arose another generation after them, who knew not the Lord, and likewise not the deeds which he had done for Israel.
11 Les enfants d'Israël firent ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, et ils servirent les Baals.
And the children of Israel did the evil in the eyes of the Lord, and served the Be'alim:
12 Ils abandonnèrent Yahvé, le Dieu de leurs pères, qui les avait fait sortir du pays d'Égypte, et ils suivirent d'autres dieux, les dieux des peuples qui les entouraient, et ils se prosternèrent devant eux; et ils irritèrent Yahvé.
And they forsook the Lord the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they went after other gods, of the gods of the nations that were round about them, and they bowed themselves unto them, and incensed the Lord.
13 Ils abandonnèrent Yahvé, et servirent Baal et Ashtaroth.
And they forsook the Lord, and served Baal and 'Ashtaroth.
14 La colère de Yahvé s'enflamma contre Israël, et il les livra entre les mains de pillards qui les pillèrent. Il les vendit entre les mains de leurs ennemis tout autour, de sorte qu'ils ne purent plus tenir devant leurs ennemis.
And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of spoilers who spoiled them, and he sold them into the hand of their enemies round about, and they were not able any longer to stand before their enemies.
15 Partout où ils sortaient, la main de l'Éternel était contre eux pour le mal, comme l'Éternel l'avait dit et comme l'Éternel le leur avait juré; et ils étaient dans une grande détresse.
Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had spoken, and as the Lord had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.
16 L'Yahvé suscita des juges, qui les sauvèrent de la main de ceux qui les pillaient.
And the Lord raised up judges, and they delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.
17 Mais ils n'écoutèrent pas leurs juges, car ils se prostituèrent à d'autres dieux et se prosternèrent devant eux. Ils se sont vite détournés de la voie dans laquelle marchaient leurs pères, en obéissant aux commandements de Yahvé. Ils ne l'ont pas fait.
But also unto their judges they did not hearken; but they went astray after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers had walked in, to obey the commandments of the Lord; they did not so.
18 Lorsque l'Éternel leur suscitait des juges, l'Éternel était avec le juge et les sauvait de la main de leurs ennemis pendant toute la durée du mandat du juge, car l'Éternel était affligé de leurs gémissements à cause de ceux qui les opprimaient et les troublaient.
And when the Lord raised them up judges, then was the Lord with the judge, and he delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord bethought himself because of their groaning by reason of those that oppressed them and ill-treated them.
19 Mais quand le juge fut mort, ils revinrent en arrière et se corrompirent plus que leurs pères en suivant d'autres dieux pour les servir et se prosterner devant eux. Ils ne cessèrent pas ce qu'ils faisaient et ne renoncèrent pas à leur entêtement.
And it came to pass, when the judge died, that they returned, and became more corrupt than their fathers, in going after other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them: they omitted nothing from their doings, and from their stubborn way.
20 La colère de Yahvé s'enflamma contre Israël, et il dit: « Parce que cette nation a transgressé mon alliance que j'avais prescrite à ses pères, et qu'elle n'a pas écouté ma voix,
And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel; and he said, For the cause that this people have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice:
21 je ne chasserai plus devant elle aucune des nations que Josué a laissées en mourant,
So will I also for my part not drive out henceforth any man from before them out of the nations which Joshua left when he died;
22 afin de mettre Israël à l'épreuve par elles, pour voir s'ils garderont ou non la voie de Yahvé pour y marcher, comme l'ont fait leurs pères. »
In order to prove through them the Israelites, whether they will keep the way of the Lord, to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.
23 Yahvé laissa donc ces nations, sans les chasser précipitamment. Il ne les a pas livrées entre les mains de Josué.
And thus did the Lord leave these nations, so as not to drive them out speedily; and he delivered them not into the hand of Joshua.
