Juges 19
1 En ce temps-là, où il n'y avait pas de roi en Israël, il y avait un Lévite qui habitait à l'autre bout de la montagne d'Éphraïm, et qui prit pour lui une concubine de Bethléhem de Juda.
In those days, when there was no king in Israel, there was a man, a Levite, living for a while in the most remote area of the hill country of Ephraim. He took for himself a woman, a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.
2 Sa concubine se prostitua à lui, et s'en alla de chez son père à Bethléhem de Juda, où elle resta quatre mois.
But his concubine was unfaithful to him; she left him and went back to her father's house in Bethlehem of Judah. She stayed there for four months.
3 Son mari se leva et alla après elle pour lui parler avec bonté, afin de la ramener, ayant avec lui son serviteur et un couple d'ânes. Elle l'amena dans la maison de son père; et lorsque le père de la jeune femme le vit, il se réjouit de le rencontrer.
Then her husband got up and went after her in order to persuade her to come back. His servant was with him, and a pair of donkeys. She brought him into her father's house. When the girl's father saw him, he was glad.
4 Son beau-père, le père de la jeune fille, le garda là, et il resta avec lui trois jours. Ils mangèrent et burent, et restèrent là.
His father-in-law, the girl's father, persuaded him to stay for three days. They ate and drank, and they spent the night there.
5 Le quatrième jour, ils se levèrent de bon matin, et il se leva pour partir. Le père de la jeune femme dit à son gendre: « Fortifie ton cœur avec un morceau de pain, et ensuite tu iras ton chemin. »
On the fourth day they got up early and he prepared to go, but the girl's father said to his son-in-law, “Strengthen yourself with a bit of bread, then you may go.”
6 Ils s'assirent donc, mangèrent et burent tous les deux ensemble. Le père de la jeune femme dit alors à l'homme: « Je te prie de rester toute la nuit, et que ton cœur soit joyeux. »
So the two of them sat down to eat and drink together. Then the girl's father said, “Please be willing to spend the night and have a good time.”
7 L'homme se leva pour partir, mais son beau-père le pressa et il resta là encore.
When the Levite got up to leave, the father of the young woman urged him to stay, so he changed his plan and spent the night there again.
8 Le cinquième jour, il se leva de bon matin pour partir; le père de la jeune femme lui dit: « Je te prie de fortifier ton cœur et de rester jusqu'à ce que le jour décline »; et ils mangèrent tous les deux.
On the fifth day he woke up early to leave, but the girl's father said, “Strengthen yourself, and wait until the afternoon.” So the two of them had a meal.
9 Lorsque l'homme se leva pour partir, lui, sa concubine et son serviteur, son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, lui dirent: « Voici, le jour approche du soir, reste donc toute la nuit. Voici que le jour s'achève. Reste ici, pour que ton cœur soit joyeux; et demain, pars de bonne heure, pour que tu puisses rentrer chez toi. »
When the Levite and his concubine and his servant rose up to depart, his father-in-law, the girl's father said to him, “See, now the day is advancing toward evening. Please stay another night, and have a good time. You can get up early tomorrow and go back home.”
10 Mais l'homme ne voulut pas rester cette nuit-là, il se leva et alla près de Jébus (appelée aussi Jérusalem). Il avait avec lui un couple d'ânes sellés. Sa concubine était aussi avec lui.
But the Levite was not willing to spend the night. He got up and left. He went toward Jebus (that is Jerusalem). He had a pair of saddled donkeys—and his concubine was with him.
11 Lorsqu'ils furent près de Jébus, le jour était déjà bien avancé, et le serviteur dit à son maître: « Viens, je te prie, entrons dans cette ville des Jébusiens et restons-y. »
When they were near Jebus, the day was nearly over, and the servant said to his master, “Come, let us turn aside to the city of the Jebusites and spend the night in it.”
12 Son maître lui dit: « Nous n'entrerons pas dans la ville d'un étranger qui n'est pas des enfants d'Israël, mais nous passerons à Guibea. »
His master said to him, “We will not turn aside into a city of foreigners who do not belong to the people of Israel. We will go on to Gibeah.”
13 Il dit à son serviteur: « Viens, approchons-nous de l'un de ces lieux, et nous logerons à Guibea ou à Rama. »
The Levite said to his young man, “Come, let us go to one of those other places, and spend the night in Gibeah or Ramah.”
14 Ils passèrent donc et s'en allèrent, et le soleil se coucha sur eux près de Guibéa, qui appartient à Benjamin.
So they went on, and the sun set as they came near to Gibeah, in the territory of Benjamin.
15 Ils passèrent par là, pour entrer et se loger à Guibea. Il y alla, et s'assit dans la rue de la ville, car il n'y avait personne qui les reçût dans sa maison pour y rester.
They turned aside there to spend the night in Gibeah. They went and sat down in the city square, but no one took them into his house for the night.
16 Voici qu'un vieillard sortait du champ, le soir, après son travail. Or cet homme était de la montagne d'Ephraïm, et il habitait à Guibea; mais les gens du lieu étaient Benjamites.
But then an old man was coming from his work in the field that evening. He was from the hill country of Ephraim, and he was staying for a while in Gibeah. But the men living in that place were Benjamites.
17 Il leva les yeux, et vit le voyageur dans la rue de la ville; et le vieillard dit: « Où vas-tu? D'où viens-tu? »
He raised his eyes and saw the traveler in the city square. The old man said, “Where are you going? Where are you coming from?”
18 Il lui dit: « Nous passons de Bethléem Juda à l'autre côté de la montagne d'Ephraïm. Je suis de là, et je suis allé à Bethléem de Juda. Je vais à la maison de Yahvé, et il n'y a personne qui m'ait accueilli dans sa maison.
The Levite said to him, “We are on our way from Bethlehem in Judah to the most remote part of the hill country of Ephraim, which is where I come from. I went to Bethlehem in Judah, and I am going to the house of Yahweh, but there is no one who will take me into his house.
19 Mais il y a de la paille et du fourrage pour nos ânes; il y a aussi du pain et du vin pour moi, pour ton serviteur et pour le jeune homme qui est avec tes serviteurs. Il ne manque de rien. »
We have straw and feed for our donkeys, and there is bread and wine for me and your female servant here, and for this young man with your servants. We lack nothing.”
20 Le vieil homme dit: « La paix soit avec toi! Laisse-moi subvenir à tous tes besoins, mais ne dors pas dans la rue. »
The old man greeted them, “Peace be with you! I will take care of all your needs. Only do not spend the night in the square.”
21 Il le fit donc entrer dans sa maison et donna du fourrage aux ânes. Puis ils se lavèrent les pieds, mangèrent et burent.
So the man brought the Levite into his house and gave feed to the donkeys. They washed their feet and ate and drank.
22 Comme ils étaient en train de se réjouir, voici que les hommes de la ville, des gens méchants, entourèrent la maison et frappèrent à la porte; ils s'adressèrent au maître de maison, le vieillard, en disant: « Fais sortir l'homme qui est entré dans ta maison, pour que nous puissions coucher avec lui! ».
While they were making their hearts glad, some men of the city, worthless men, surrounded the house, beating on the door. They spoke to the old man, the master of the house, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house, so we can have sex with him.”
23 L'homme, le maître de maison, sortit vers eux et leur dit: « Non, mes frères, je vous en prie, n'agissez pas si méchamment; puisque cet homme est entré dans ma maison, ne faites pas cette folie.
The man, the master of the house, went out to them and said to them, “No, my brothers, please do not do this evil thing! Since this man is a guest in my house, do not do this wicked thing!
24 Voici ma fille vierge et sa concubine. Je vais les faire sortir maintenant. Humilie-les, et fais d'elles ce qui te semble bon; mais à l'égard de cet homme, ne fais pas cette folie. »
See, my virgin daughter and his concubine are here. Let me bring them out now. Violate them and do with them whatever you like. But do not do such a wicked thing to this man!”
25 Mais les hommes ne voulaient pas l'écouter; alors l'homme saisit sa concubine et la leur amena; ils eurent des rapports sexuels avec elle et en abusèrent toute la nuit jusqu'au matin. Quand le jour commença à poindre, ils la relâchèrent.
But the men would not listen to him, so the man seized his concubine and brought her out to them. They raped her and abused her all throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go.
26 La femme vint à l'aube et se prosterna à la porte de la maison de l'homme où se trouvait son maître, jusqu'à ce qu'il fasse jour.
At dawn the woman came and she fell down at the door of the man's house where her master was, and she lay there until it was light.
27 Son seigneur se leva le matin, ouvrit les portes de la maison et sortit pour aller à sa rencontre; et voici que la femme, sa concubine, était tombée à la porte de la maison, les mains sur le seuil.
Her master rose up in the morning and opened the doors of the house and went out to go on his way. He could see his concubine lying there at the door, with her hands on the threshold.
28 Il lui dit: « Lève-toi, et allons-y! » mais personne ne répondit. Alors il la fit monter sur l'âne; l'homme se leva, et alla à sa place.
The Levite said to her, “Get up. Let us go.” But there was no answer. He put her on the donkey, and the man set out for home.
29 Lorsqu'il fut entré dans sa maison, il prit un couteau, coupa sa concubine, la divisa en douze morceaux et l'envoya dans tout le territoire d'Israël.
When the Levite came to his house, he took a knife, and he took hold of his concubine, and cut her up, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent the pieces everywhere throughout Israel.
30 Tous ceux qui virent cela dirent: « On n'a jamais vu ni fait un tel acte depuis le jour où les enfants d'Israël sont sortis du pays d'Égypte jusqu'à ce jour! Considérez-le, prenez conseil, et parlez. »
All who saw this said, “Such a thing has never been done or seen from the day the people of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this present day. Think about it! Give us advice! Tell us what to do!”
