Juges 18
1 En ce temps-là, il n'y avait pas de roi en Israël. En ces jours-là, la tribu des Danites chercha un héritage pour y habiter; car jusqu'à ce jour, leur héritage ne leur était pas échu parmi les tribus d'Israël.
In those days, there was no king in Israel, —and, in those days, the tribe of the Danites was seeking for itself an inheritance to dwell in for there had not fallen to them, unto that day, in the midst of the tribes of Israel, enough for an inheritance.
2 Les fils de Dan envoyèrent de Zorah et d'Eshtaol cinq hommes de leur famille, des hommes vaillants, pour explorer le pays et le sonder. Ils leur dirent: « Allez, explorez le pays! » Ils arrivèrent dans la montagne d'Ephraïm, à la maison de Mica, et ils y passèrent la nuit.
So then the sons of Dan sent, out of their family, five men out of their bounds—men who were sons of valour—out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol—to spy out the land, and to explore it, and they said unto them, Go! explore the land. And they came into the hill country of Ephraim, as far as the house of Micah, and lodged there.
3 Lorsqu'ils furent près de la maison de Michée, ils reconnurent la voix du jeune homme, le Lévite; ils s'y rendirent donc et lui dirent: « Qui t'a amené ici? Que fais-tu dans ce lieu? Que possèdes-tu ici? »
They, being by the house of Micah, knew the voice of the young man, the Levite, —so they turned aside there, and said to him—Who brought thee in hither? and what art thou doing in this place, and what hast thou here?
4 Il leur dit: « C'est ainsi que Michée m'a traité, il m'a engagé et je suis devenu son prêtre. »
And he said unto them, Thus and so, hath Micah dealt with me, and hath hired me, and I am become his priest.
5 Ils lui dirent: « Je t'en prie, demande conseil à Dieu, afin que nous sachions si la voie que nous suivons sera prospère. »
So they said unto him—Ask of God, we pray thee, —that we may know whether the journey on which we are going shall have good success.
6 Le prêtre leur dit: « Allez en paix. La voie que vous suivez est devant l'Éternel. »
And the priest said unto them—Go! and prosper, —before Yahweh, is your journey on which ye go.
7 Et les cinq hommes partirent, et vinrent à Laïsh, et virent le peuple qui était là, et comment ils vivaient en sécurité, à la manière des Sidoniens, tranquilles et en sûreté; car il n'y avait personne dans le pays qui possédât de l'autorité, qui pût leur faire honte en quoi que ce soit; et ils étaient loin des Sidoniens, et ils n'avaient affaire à personne d'autre.
So the five men went their way, and entered Laish, —and saw the people who were therein, dwelling securely, after the manner of the Zidonians, quietly and securely, and there was no one to reproach them with anything in the land, none to possess himself of dominion, they being, far away, from the Zidonians, and having no dealings with any one.
8 Ils arrivèrent auprès de leurs frères à Zorah et à Eshtaol; et leurs frères leur demandèrent: « Que dites-vous? »
So they came unto their brethren, in Zorah and Eshtaol, —and their brethren said unto them—Why are ye minded to do nothing?
9 Ils dirent: « Levez-vous, et montons contre eux; car nous avons vu le pays, et voici, il est très bon. Restez-vous immobiles? Ne soyez pas paresseux pour aller et entrer en possession du pays.
And they said—Arise! and let us go up against them, for we have seen the land, and lo! it is very good, —are, ye, then, minded to do nothing? do not be too slothful to go, and enter, and take possession of the land.
10 En partant, vous rencontrerez un peuple qui ne se doute de rien, et le pays est vaste, car Dieu l'a remis entre vos mains, un lieu où rien ne manque de ce qui est sur la terre. »
When ye do enter, ye will enter amongst a people secure, and, the land, is of ample bounds, —yea God hath delivered it into your hands, —a place where there is no lack of anything that is in the earth.
11 La famille des Danites partit de Zorah et d'Eshtaol, avec six cents hommes armés d'armes de guerre.
So there brake up from thence, out of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men, begirt with weapons of war.
12 Ils montèrent et campèrent à Kiriath Jearim, en Juda. C'est pourquoi on a appelé ce lieu Mahaneh Dan jusqu'à ce jour. Voici, il est derrière Kirjath Jearim.
And they went up and encamped in Kiriath-jearim, in Judah, —wherefore they have called that place, Mahaneh-dan—unto this day, lo! it is behind Kiriath-jearim.
13 Ils passèrent de là dans la montagne d'Éphraïm, et arrivèrent à la maison de Michée.
And they passed on from thence unto the hill country of Ephraim, —and came as far as the house of Micah.
14 Les cinq hommes qui étaient allés explorer le pays de Laïsch prirent la parole et dirent à leurs frères: « Savez-vous qu'il y a dans ces maisons un éphod, des théraphim, une image taillée et une image en fonte? Considérez donc maintenant ce que vous avez à faire. »
Then responded the five men who had been to spy out the land of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Know ye that there are in these houses, an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image, —now, therefore, know what ye will do!
15 Ils passèrent par là, arrivèrent à la maison du jeune Lévite, à la maison de Michée, et lui demandèrent comment il allait.
So they turned aside thither, and entered into the house of the young man the Levite, the house of Micah, —and asked him of his welfare.
16 Les six cents hommes armés de leurs armes de guerre, qui étaient des fils de Dan, se tenaient à l'entrée de la porte.
Now, the six hundred men, begirt with weapons of war, were standing at the entrance of the gate, —they being of the sons of Dan.
17 Les cinq hommes qui étaient allés explorer le pays montèrent et entrèrent là, et ils prirent l'image taillée, l'éphod, les théraphim et l'image en fonte; le prêtre se tint à l'entrée de la porte avec les six cents hommes armés de fusils de guerre.
Then went up the five men who had been to spy out the land, they came in thither, they took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image, —now, the priest, was standing at the entrance of the gate, with the six hundred men who were begirt with weapons of war.
18 Lorsque ceux-ci entrèrent dans la maison de Michée et prirent l'image gravée, l'éphod, le théraphim et l'image en fusion, le prêtre leur dit: « Que faites-vous? »
But, when, these, had entered the house of Micah, and taken the graven image and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image, the priest said unto them, What are ye doing?
19 Ils lui dirent: « Tais-toi, mets ta main sur ta bouche, et viens avec nous. Sois pour nous un père et un prêtre. Est-il préférable pour toi d'être prêtre de la maison d'un seul homme, ou d'être prêtre d'une tribu et d'une famille en Israël? ».
And they said unto him—Hold thy peace, lay thy hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and become to us a father and a priest, —is it better that thou be priest to the house of one man, or that thou be priest to a tribe and to a family in Israel?
20 Le cœur du prêtre se réjouit, il prit l'éphod, les théraphim et la statue gravée, et il partit avec le peuple.
Then was the heart of the priest glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, —and came into the midst of the people.
21 Ils se retournèrent et partirent, et mirent devant eux les petits enfants, le bétail et les biens.
So they turned, and went their way, —and put the little ones, and the cattle, and the goods, before them.
22 Lorsqu'ils furent à bonne distance de la maison de Michée, les hommes qui étaient dans les maisons voisines de la maison de Michée se rassemblèrent et rattrapèrent les fils de Dan.
They, had gone a good way from the house of Micah, when, the men that were in the houses near to the house of Micah, were called out and overtook the sons of Dan.
23 Comme ils appelaient les enfants de Dan, ceux-ci tournèrent le visage et dirent à Michée: « Qu'as-tu, pour venir avec une telle troupe? »
And they called unto the sons of Dan, who turned their faces, —and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou hast called out thy neighbours?
24 Il dit: « Tu as pris mes dieux que j'avais faits, ainsi que le prêtre, et tu es parti! Que me reste-t-il? Comment peux-tu me demander: « Qu'est-ce que tu as? »
And he said—My gods which I had made, ye have taken away, and the priest, and have departed, and what have I more? How then is it that ye can say unto me, What aileth thee?
25 Les enfants de Dan lui dirent: « Ne fais pas entendre ta voix au milieu de nous, de peur que des hommes furieux ne tombent sur toi et que tu ne perdes la vie, avec celle de ta famille. »
And the sons of Dan said unto him, Do not let thy voice be heard among us, —lest men embittered in soul fall upon you, and thou gather in thy life and the lives of thy household.
26 Les fils de Dan s'en allèrent; et lorsque Michée vit qu'ils étaient trop forts pour lui, il se retourna et retourna dans sa maison.
And the sons of Dan went on their journey, —and, when Micah saw that they were, too strong, for him, he turned and went back unto his house.
27 Ils prirent ce que Michée avait fait, et le prêtre qu'il avait, et ils arrivèrent à Laïsh, vers un peuple tranquille et sans méfiance, et ils les frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée; puis ils brûlèrent la ville par le feu.
They, therefore, took what Micah had made, and the priest that he had, and came upon Laish, upon a people quiet and secure, and smote them with the edge of the sword, —the city also, burned they with fire.
28 Il n'y avait pas de libérateur, car elle était loin de Sidon, et ils n'avaient affaire à personne d'autre; elle était dans la vallée qui s'étend près de Beth Rehob. Ils bâtirent la ville et l'habitèrent.
And there was no one to rescue, because it was, far, from Zidon, and they had no, dealings, with any one, it, being in the vale that pertaineth to Beth-rehob. Then built they the city, and dwelt therein,
29 Ils appelèrent le nom de la ville Dan, d'après le nom de Dan, leur père, qui était né en Israël; cependant le nom de la ville était autrefois Laish.
and called the name of the city, Dan, by the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel, —howbeit, Laish, was the name of the city, at the first.
30 Les fils de Dan s'établirent l'image taillée; et Jonathan, fils de Gershom, fils de Moïse, et ses fils, furent prêtres pour la tribu des Danites jusqu'au jour de la captivité du pays.
And the sons of Dan set up for themselves the graven image, —and, Jonathan, son of Gershom, son of Moses, he and his sons, became priests to the tribe of the Danites, until the day of the captivity of the land.
31 Et ils s'établirent l'image taillée de Michée, qu'il avait faite, et elle resta tout le temps que la maison de Dieu fut à Silo.
So they set up for themselves the graven image of Micah, which he had made, —[and let it remain] all the days that the house of God was in Shiloh.
