Josué 9
1 Lorsque tous les rois qui étaient de l'autre côté du Jourdain, dans la montagne et dans la plaine, et sur tout le rivage de la grande mer devant le Liban, le Héthien, l'Amoréen, le Cananéen, le Phérézien, le Hévien et le Jébusien, en eurent connaissance
Now When these things were heard of, all the kings beyond the Jordan, that dwelt in the mountains and in the plains, in the places near the sea, and on the coasts of the great sea, they also that dwell by Libanus, the Hethite and the Amorrhite, the Chanaanite, the Pherezite, and the Hevite, and the Jebusite,
2 ils se rassemblèrent pour combattre Josué et Israël, d'un commun accord.
Gathered themselves together, to fight against Josue and Israel with one mind, and one resolution.
3 Mais lorsque les habitants de Gabaon apprirent ce que Josué avait fait à Jéricho et à Aï,
But they that dwelt in Gabaon, hearing all that Josue had done to Jericho and Hai:
4 ils eurent aussi recours à une ruse, ils allèrent se faire passer pour des ambassadeurs, ils prirent de vieux sacs sur leurs ânes, de vieilles peaux de vin déchirées et ficelées,
Cunningly devising took for themselves provisions, laying old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles rent and sewed up again,
5 ils portèrent à leurs pieds de vieilles sandales rapiécées et de vieux vêtements. Tout le pain de leur réserve de nourriture était sec et moisi.
And very old shoes, which for a show of age were clouted with patches, and old garments upon them: the leaves also, which they carried for provisions by the way, were hard, and broken into pieces:
6 Ils allèrent trouver Josué au camp de Gilgal et lui dirent, ainsi qu'aux hommes d'Israël: « Nous venons d'un pays lointain. Fais donc maintenant une alliance avec nous. »
And they went to Josue, who then abode in the camp at Galgal, and said to him, and to all Israel with him: We are come from a far country, desiring to make peace with you. And the children of Israel answered them, and said:
7 Les hommes d'Israël dirent aux Hivvites: « Et si vous viviez parmi nous? Comment pourrions-nous faire une alliance avec vous? »
Perhaps you dwell in the land which falls to our lot; if so, we can make no league with you.
8 Ils dirent à Josué: « Nous sommes tes serviteurs. » Josué leur dit: « Qui êtes-vous? D'où venez-vous? »
But they said to Josue: We are thy servants. Josue said to them: Who are you? and whence came you?
9 Ils lui dirent: « Tes serviteurs sont venus d'un pays très lointain à cause du nom de Yahvé ton Dieu, car nous avons entendu parler de sa renommée, de tout ce qu'il a fait en Égypte,
They answered: From a very far country thy servants are come in the name of the Lord thy God. For we have heard the fame of his power, all the things that he did in Egypt.
10 et de tout ce qu'il a fait aux deux rois des Amoréens qui étaient au-delà du Jourdain, à Sihon, roi de Heshbon, et à Og, roi de Basan, qui était à Ashtaroth.
And to the two kings of the Amorrhites that were beyond the Jordan, Sehon king of Hesebon, and Og king of Basan, that was in Astaroth:
11 Nos anciens et tous les habitants de notre pays nous ont parlé en disant: « Prenez en main des provisions pour le voyage et allez à leur rencontre. Dites-leur: « Nous sommes vos serviteurs. Fais maintenant une alliance avec nous ».
And our ancients, and all the inhabitants of our country said to us: Take with you victuals for a long way, and go meet them, and say: We are your servants, make ye a league with us.
12 Voici notre pain que nous avons pris chaud pour nos provisions dans nos maisons le jour où nous sommes sortis pour aller vers vous; mais maintenant, voici, il est sec et il a moisi.
Behold, these leaves we took hot, when we set out from our houses to come to you, now they are become dry, and broken in pieces, by being exceeding old.
13 Ces outres à vin, que nous avons remplies, étaient neuves; et voici qu'elles sont déchirées. Ces vêtements et nos sandales sont devenus vieux à cause du très long voyage. »
These bottles of wine when we filled them were new, now they are rent and burst. These garments we have on, and the shoes we have on our feet, by reason of the very long journey are worn out, and almost consumed.
14 Les hommes goûtèrent à leurs provisions, et ne demandèrent pas conseil à la bouche de Yahvé.
They took therefore of their victuals, and consulted not the mouth of the Lord.
15 Josué fit la paix avec eux et conclut une alliance avec eux, pour les laisser vivre. Les princes de l'assemblée leur jurèrent.
And Josue made peace with them, and entering into a league promised that they should not be slain: the princes also of the multitude swore to them.
16 Au bout de trois jours, après qu'ils eurent fait alliance avec eux, ils apprirent qu'ils étaient leurs voisins et qu'ils vivaient parmi eux.
Now three days after the league was made, they heard that they dwelt nigh, and they should be among them.
17 Les enfants d'Israël partirent et arrivèrent dans leurs villes le troisième jour. Ces villes étaient Gabaon, Chephira, Beeroth et Kiriath Jearim.
And the children of Israel removed the camp, and came into their cities on the third day, the names of which are Gabaon, and Caphira, and Beroth, and Cariathiarim.
18 Les enfants d'Israël ne les frappèrent pas, car les chefs de l'assemblée le leur avaient juré par l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël. Toute l'assemblée murmura contre les princes.
And they slew them not, because the princes of the multitude had sworn in the name of the Lord the God of Israel. Then all the common people murmured against the princes.
19 Mais tous les chefs dirent à toute l'assemblée: « Nous leur avons juré par l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël. Nous ne pouvons donc pas les toucher.
And they answered them: We have sworn to them in the name of the Lord the God of Israel, and therefore we may not touch them.
20 Nous leur ferons cela, et nous les laisserons vivre, de peur que la colère ne s'abatte sur nous, à cause du serment que nous leur avons fait. »
But this we mill do to them: Let their lives be saved, lest the wrath of the Lord be stirred up against us, if we should be forsworn.
21 Les princes leur dirent: « Laissez-les vivre. » Ils devinrent donc des coupeurs de bois et des puiseurs d'eau pour toute l'assemblée, comme les princes le leur avaient dit.
But so let them live, as to serve the whole multitude in hewing wood, and bringing in water. As they were speaking these things,
22 Josué les fit venir et leur parla ainsi: « Pourquoi nous avez-vous trompés en disant: « Nous sommes très loin de vous », alors que vous habitez au milieu de nous?
Josue called the Gabaonites and said to them: Why would you impose upon us, saying: We dwell far off from you, whereas you are in the midst of us?
23 Maintenant, vous êtes donc maudits, et certains d'entre vous ne manqueront jamais de devenir des esclaves, aussi bien des coupeurs de bois que des puisatiers pour la maison de mon Dieu. »
Therefore you shall be under a curse, and your race shall always be hewers of wood, and carriers of water unto the house of my God.
24 Ils prirent la parole et dirent à Josué: « Parce que tes serviteurs ont certainement appris comment Yahvé ton Dieu a ordonné à Moïse, son serviteur, de te donner tout le pays et de détruire devant toi tous les habitants du pays. C'est pourquoi nous avons eu très peur pour nos vies à cause de vous, et nous avons fait cette chose.
They answered: It was told us thy servants, that the Lord thy God had promised his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants thereof. Therefore we feared exceedingly and provided for our lives. compelled by the dread we had of you and we took this counsel.
25 Maintenant, voici, nous sommes entre tes mains. Fais de nous ce qu'il te semblera bon et juste de faire. »
And now we are in thy hand: deal with us as it seemeth good and right unto thee.
26 Il leur fit ainsi et les délivra de la main des enfants d'Israël, afin qu'ils ne les tuent pas.
So Josue did as he had said, and delivered them from the hand of the children of Israel, that they should not be slain.
27 Ce jour-là, Josué les fit couper du bois et tirer de l'eau pour l'assemblée et pour l'autel de Yahvé jusqu'à ce jour, dans le lieu qu'il devait choisir.
And he gave orders in that day that they should be in the service of all the people, and of the altar of the Lord, hewing wood and carrying water, until this present time, in the place which the Lord hath chosen.
