Josué 8
1 Yahvé dit à Josué: « N'aie pas peur et ne t'effraie pas. Prends avec toi tous les guerriers, lève-toi et monte à Aï. Voici que je livre entre tes mains le roi d'Aï, son peuple, sa ville et son pays.
After, the Lord saide vnto Ioshua, Feare not, neither bee thou faint hearted: take all the men of warre with thee and arise, go vp to Ai: beholde, I haue giuen into thine hand the King of Ai, and his people, and his citie, and his land.
2 Tu feras à Aï et à son roi ce que tu as fait à Jéricho et à son roi, sauf que tu prendras pour toi ses biens et son bétail. Mettez la ville en embuscade derrière elle. »
And thou shalt doe to Ai and to the King thereof, as thou didst vnto Iericho and to the King thereof: neuerthelesse the spoyle thereof and the cattell thereof shall ye take vnto you for a praye: thou shalt lye in wait against the citie on the backside thereof.
3 Et Josué se leva, avec tous les guerriers, pour monter à Aï. Josué choisit trente mille hommes, les plus vaillants, et les envoya de nuit.
Then Ioshua arose, and all the men of warre to goe vp against Ai: and Ioshua chose out thirtie thousand strong men, and valiant, and sent them away by night.
4 Il leur donna cet ordre: « Voici, vous vous mettrez en embuscade contre la ville, derrière la ville. Ne vous éloignez pas beaucoup de la ville, mais tenez-vous tous prêts.
And he commanded them, saying, Behold, yee shall lye in waite against the citie on the backeside of the citie: goe not very farre from the citie, but be ye all in a readinesse.
5 Moi et tout le peuple qui est avec moi, nous nous approcherons de la ville. Lorsqu'ils sortiront contre nous, comme au début, nous fuirons devant eux.
And I and all the people that are with me, will approche vnto the citie: and when they shall come out against vs, as they did at the first time, then will we flee before them.
6 Ils sortiront après nous jusqu'à ce que nous les ayons éloignés de la ville, car ils diront: « Ils fuient devant nous, comme la première fois ». Nous fuirons donc devant eux,
For they wil come out after vs, till we haue brought them out of the citie: for they will say, They flee before vs as at the first time: so we will flee before them.
7 et vous vous lèverez de l'embuscade, et vous prendrez possession de la ville, car l'Éternel, votre Dieu, la livrera entre vos mains.
Then you shall rise vp from lying in waite and destroy the citie: for the Lord your God wil deliuer it into your hand.
8 Lorsque vous vous serez emparés de la ville, vous y mettrez le feu. Tu feras cela selon la parole de Yahvé. Voici, je te l'ai ordonné. »
And when ye haue taken the citie, ye shall set it on fire: according to the commandement of the Lord shall ye do: behold, I haue charged you.
9 Josué les envoya; ils allèrent préparer l'embuscade, et ils restèrent entre Béthel et Aï, à l'ouest d'Aï; mais Josué resta au milieu du peuple cette nuit-là.
Ioshua then sent them foorth, and they went to lye in waite, and abode betweene Beth-el and Ai, on the Westside of Ai: but Ioshua lodged that night among the people.
10 Josué se leva de bon matin, rassembla le peuple, et monta, lui et les anciens d'Israël, devant le peuple, à Aï.
And Ioshua rose vp early in the morning, and nombred the people: and he and the Elders of Israel went vp before the people against Ai.
11 Tout le peuple, même les hommes de guerre qui étaient avec lui, montèrent et s'approchèrent, arrivèrent devant la ville et campèrent au nord d'Aï. Or, il y avait une vallée entre lui et Aï.
Also all the men of warre that were with him went vp and drewe neere, and came against the citie, and pitched on the Northside of Ai: and there was a valley betweene them and Ai.
12 Il prit environ cinq mille hommes, et les mit en embuscade entre Béthel et Aï, à l'ouest de la ville.
And hee tooke about fiue thousande men, and set them to lye in waite betweene Beth-el and Ai, on the Westside of the citie.
13 Ils mirent donc le peuple, toute l'armée qui était au nord de la ville, et leur embuscade à l'ouest de la ville; et Josué alla cette nuit-là au milieu de la vallée.
And the people set all the hoste that was on the Northside against the citie, and the liers in waite on the West, against the citie: and Ioshua went the same night into the mids of the valley.
14 Lorsque le roi d'Aï vit cela, il se hâta et se leva de bonne heure, et les hommes de la ville sortirent contre Israël pour livrer bataille, lui et tout son peuple, au moment fixé, devant la plaine; mais il ne savait pas qu'il y avait une embuscade contre lui derrière la ville.
And when the King of Ai sawe it, then the men of the citie hasted and rose vp earely, and went out against Israel to battell, hee and all his people at the time appointed, before the plaine: for he knew not that any lay in waite against him on the backeside of the citie.
15 Josué et tout Israël firent comme s'ils étaient battus devant eux, et s'enfuirent par le chemin du désert.
Then Ioshua and all Israel as beaten before them, fled by the way of the wildernes.
16 Tout le peuple qui était dans la ville se rassembla pour les poursuivre. Ils poursuivirent Josué, et furent entraînés loin de la ville.
And all the people of the citie were called together, to pursue after them: and they pursued after Ioshua, and were drawen away out of the city,
17 Il ne resta pas un homme à Aï ou à Béthel qui ne se soit mis à la poursuite d'Israël. Ils laissèrent la ville ouverte, et poursuivirent Israël.
So that there was not a man left in Ai, nor in Beth-el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the citie open, and pursued after Israel.
18 Yahvé dit à Josué: « Étends le javelot qui est dans ta main vers Aï, car je vais le livrer entre tes mains. » Josué étendit vers la ville le javelot qu'il avait à la main.
Then the Lord said vnto Ioshua, Stretch out the speare that is in thine hande, towarde Ai: for I wil giue it into thine hand: and Ioshua stretched out the speare that hee had in his hand, toward the citie.
19 L'embuscade se leva rapidement de sa place, et ils coururent dès qu'il eut tendu la main, entrèrent dans la ville et la prirent. Ils se précipitèrent et mirent le feu à la ville.
And they that lay in wait, arose quickly out of their place, and ranne as soone as he had stretched out his hand, and they entred into the citie, and tooke it, and hasted, and set the citie on fire.
20 Lorsque les hommes d'Aï regardèrent derrière eux, ils virent et voici que la fumée de la ville montait jusqu'au ciel, et ils n'eurent pas la force de fuir par ici ou par là. Le peuple qui s'était enfui dans le désert se retourna contre ses poursuivants.
And the men of Ai looked behinde them, and sawe it: for loe, the smoke of the citie ascended vp to heauen, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: for the people that fled to the wildernesse, turned backe vpon the pursuers.
21 Lorsque Josué et tout Israël virent que l'embuscade avait pris la ville et que la fumée de la ville montait, ils firent demi-tour et tuèrent les hommes d'Aï.
When Ioshua and all Israel sawe that they that lay in waite, had taken the citie, and that the smoke of the citie mounted vp, then they turned againe and slewe the men of Ai.
22 Les autres sortirent de la ville contre eux, de sorte qu'ils se trouvaient au milieu d'Israël, les uns de ce côté-ci, les autres de ce côté-là. Ils les frappèrent, de sorte qu'ils ne laissèrent aucun d'entre eux rester ou s'échapper.
Also the other issued out of the citie against them: so were they in the middes of Israel, these being on the one side, and the rest on the other side: and they slewe them, so that they let none of them remaine nor escape.
23 Ils capturèrent vivant le roi d'Aï et l'amenèrent à Josué.
And the King of Ai they tooke aliue, and brought him to Ioshua.
24 Lorsqu'Israël eut achevé de tuer tous les habitants d'Aï dans les champs, dans le désert où ils les poursuivaient, et qu'ils furent tous tombés au fil de l'épée jusqu'à ce qu'ils eussent disparu, tout Israël revint vers Aï et la frappa du fil de l'épée.
And when Israel had made an ende of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the fielde, that is, in the wildernesse, where they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sworde, vntill they were consumed, all the Israelites returned vnto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sworde.
25 Tous ceux qui tombèrent ce jour-là, hommes et femmes, furent douze mille, tout le peuple d'Aï.
And all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelue thousande, euen all the men of Ai.
26 Car Josué ne retira pas sa main, avec laquelle il avait tendu le javelot, jusqu'à ce qu'il eût dévasté tous les habitants d'Aï.
For Ioshua drewe not his hande backe againe which he had stretched out with the speare, vntill hee had vtterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.
27 Israël ne prit pour lui que le bétail et les biens de cette ville, selon la parole de Yahvé qu'il avait donnée à Josué.
Onely the cattell and the spoyle of this citie, Israel tooke for a praye vnto themselues, according vnto the worde of the Lord, which hee commanded Ioshua.
28 Josué brûla Aï et en fit un monceau à jamais, une désolation, jusqu'à ce jour.
And Ioshua burnt Ai, and made it an heape for euer, and a wildernes vnto this day.
29 Il pendit le roi d'Aï à un arbre jusqu'au soir. Au coucher du soleil, Josué donna l'ordre de descendre son corps de l'arbre, de le jeter à l'entrée de la porte de la ville et d'élever sur lui un grand tas de pierres qui subsiste encore aujourd'hui.
And the King of Ai hee hanged on a tree, vnto the euening. And as soone as the sunne was down, Ioshua commanded that they should take his carkeis downe from the tree, and cast it at the entring of ye gate of the city, and lay thereon a great heape of stones, that remaineth vnto this day.
30 Josué bâtit un autel à Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël, sur le mont Ebal,
Then Ioshua built an altar vnto the Lord God of Israel, in mount Ebal,
31 comme Moïse, serviteur de Yahvé, l'avait ordonné aux enfants d'Israël, selon ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la loi de Moïse: un autel de pierres brutes, sur lequel personne n'avait levé de fer. Ils y offraient des holocaustes à Yahvé et y sacrifiaient des sacrifices de prospérité.
As Moses the seruant of the Lord had commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the booke of the Lawe of Moses, an altar of whole stone, ouer which no man had lift an yron: and they offered thereon burnt offrings vnto the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings.
32 Il écrivit là, sur les pierres, une copie de la loi de Moïse, qu'il avait écrite en présence des enfants d'Israël.
Also he wrote there vpon the stones, a rehearsall of the Lawe of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.
33 Tout Israël, avec ses anciens, ses officiers et ses juges, se tenait des deux côtés de l'arche devant les prêtres lévitiques qui portaient l'arche de l'alliance de l'Éternel, l'étranger comme l'indigène, la moitié devant le mont Gerizim et l'autre moitié devant le mont Ebal, comme Moïse, serviteur de l'Éternel, l'avait ordonné dès le début, afin qu'ils bénissent le peuple d'Israël.
And all Israel (and their Elders, and officers and their iudges stoode on this side of the Arke, and on that side, before the Priestes of the Leuites, which bare the Arke of the couenant of the Lord) as well the stranger, as he that is borne in the countrey: halfe of them were ouer against mount Gerizim, and halfe of them ouer against mount Ebal, as Moses the seruant of the Lord had commanded before, that they should blesse the people of Israel.
34 Ensuite, il lut toutes les paroles de la loi, les bénédictions et les malédictions, selon tout ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la loi.
Then afterwarde hee read all the wordes of the Lawe, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the booke of the Lawe.
35 Il n'y eut pas un seul mot de tout ce que Moïse avait ordonné que Josué n'ait lu devant toute l'assemblée d'Israël, avec les femmes, les petits enfants et les étrangers qui étaient au milieu d'eux.
There was not a worde of all that Moses had commanded, which Ioshua read not before all the Congregation of Israel, as well before the women and the children, as the stranger that was conuersant among them.
