Josué 24
1 Josué rassembla toutes les tribus d'Israël à Sichem, et il appela les anciens d'Israël, leurs chefs, leurs juges et leurs officiers, et ils se présentèrent devant Dieu.
And Joshua gathered all the tribe of Israel to Selo, and convoked their elders, and their officers, and their judges, and set them before God.
2 Josué dit à tout le peuple: « Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël, dit: « Vos pères habitaient autrefois au-delà du fleuve, Térah, père d'Abraham, et père de Nachor. Ils servaient d'autres dieux.
And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the Lord God of Israel, Your fathers at first sojourned beyond the river, [even] Thara, the father of Abraam and the father of Nachor; and they served other gods.
3 J'ai pris ton père Abraham de l'autre côté du fleuve, je l'ai conduit dans tout le pays de Canaan, j'ai multiplié sa postérité, et je lui ai donné Isaac.
And I took your father Abraam from the other side of the river, and I guided him through all the land, and I multiplied his seed;
4 J'ai donné à Isaac Jacob et Ésaü, et j'ai donné à Ésaü la montagne de Séir, pour qu'il la possède. Jacob et ses enfants descendirent en Égypte.
and I gave to him Isaac, and to Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave to Esau mount Seir for him to inherit: and Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt, and became there a great and populous and mighty nation: and the Egyptians afflicted them.
5 "'J'ai envoyé Moïse et Aaron, et j'ai châtié l'Égypte, selon ce que j'ai fait au milieu d'eux; ensuite, je vous ai fait sortir.
And I struck Egypt with the wonders that I wrought among them.
6 J'ai fait sortir vos pères d'Égypte, et vous êtes arrivés à la mer. Les Égyptiens poursuivirent vos pères avec des chars et des cavaliers jusqu'à la mer Rouge.
And afterwards [God] brought out our fathers from Egypt, and you entered into the Red Sea; and the Egyptians pursued after our fathers with chariots and horses into the Red Sea.
7 Lorsqu'ils crièrent à Yahvé, il mit les ténèbres entre vous et les Égyptiens, il fit venir la mer sur eux et les couvrit, et vos yeux virent ce que j'ai fait en Égypte. Vous avez vécu de nombreux jours dans le désert.
And we cried aloud to the Lord; and he put a cloud and darkness between us and the Egyptians, and he brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen all that the Lord did in the land of Egypt; and you were in the wilderness many days.
8 "'Je t'ai fait entrer dans le pays des Amorites, qui habitaient au-delà du Jourdain. Ils t'ont combattu, et je les ai livrés entre tes mains. Tu as possédé leur pays, et je les ai détruits devant toi.
And he brought us into the land of the Amorites that lived beyond Jordan, and the Lord delivered them into our hands; and you inherited their land, and utterly destroyed them from before you.
9 Alors Balak, fils de Zippor, roi de Moab, se leva et combattit Israël. Il envoya appeler Balaam, fils de Beor, pour qu'il te maudisse.
And Balac, king of Moab, son of Sepphor, rose up, and made war against Israel, and sent and called Balaam to curse us.
10 Mais je ne voulus pas écouter Balaam, et il te bénit encore. Je vous ai donc délivrés de sa main.
But the Lord your God would not destroy you; and he greatly blessed us, and rescued us out of their hands, and delivered them [to us].
11 "'Tu as passé le Jourdain, et tu es arrivé à Jéricho. Les hommes de Jéricho te combattirent, l'Amoréen, le Phérézien, le Cananéen, le Héthien, le Guirgasien, le Hévien et le Jébusien, et je les livrai entre tes mains.
And you crossed over Jordan, and came to Jericho; and the inhabitants of Jericho fought against us, the Amorite, and the Chananite, and the Pherezite, and the Evite, and the Jebusite, and the Chettite, and the Gergesite, and the Lord delivered them into our hands.
12 J'ai envoyé devant toi le frelon, qui les a chassés de devant toi, les deux rois des Amoréens, ni par ton épée, ni par ton arc.
And he sent forth the hornet before you; and he drove them out from before you, [even] twelve kings of the Amorites, not with your sword, nor with your bow.
13 Je t'ai donné un pays sur lequel tu n'avais pas travaillé, et des villes que tu n'avais pas bâties, et tu y habites. Vous mangez des vignes et des oliviers que vous n'avez pas plantés'.
And he gave you a land on which you did not labor, and cities which you did not build, and you were settled in them; and you eat [of] vineyards and olive yards which you did not plant.
14 « Maintenant, craignez Yahvé, et servez-le avec sincérité et en vérité. Oubliez les dieux que vos pères ont servis de l'autre côté du fleuve, en Égypte, et servez Yahvé.
And now fear the Lord, and serve him in righteousness and justice; and remove the strange gods, which our fathers served beyond the river, and in Egypt; and serve the Lord.
15 Si vous trouvez mauvais de servir l'Éternel, choisissez aujourd'hui qui vous servirez, soit les dieux que servaient vos pères de l'autre côté du fleuve, soit les dieux des Amoréens dans le pays desquels vous habitez; mais moi et ma maison, nous servirons l'Éternel. »
But if it seem not good to you to serve the Lord, choose to yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods of your fathers that were on the other side of the river, or the gods of the Amorites, among whom you dwell upon their land: but I and my house will serve the Lord, for he is holy.
16 Le peuple répondit: « Loin de nous la pensée d'abandonner Yahvé pour servir d'autres dieux!
And the people answered and said, Far be it from us to forsake the Lord, so as to serve other gods.
17 Car c'est Yahvé, notre Dieu, qui nous a fait monter, nous et nos pères, du pays d'Égypte, de la maison de servitude, et qui a accompli devant nous ces grands prodiges; il nous a gardés dans tout le chemin que nous avons suivi, et parmi tous les peuples au milieu desquels nous avons passé.
The Lord our God, he is God; he brought up us and our fathers from Egypt, and kept us in all the way wherein we walked, and among all the nations through whom we passed.
18 Yahvé a chassé devant nous tous les peuples, même les Amoréens qui habitaient le pays. C'est pourquoi nous aussi nous servirons Yahvé, car il est notre Dieu. »
And the Lord cast out the Amorite, and all the nations that inhabited the land from before us: yes, we will serve the Lord, for he is our God.
19 Josué dit au peuple: « Vous ne pouvez pas servir Yahvé, car c'est un Dieu saint. C'est un Dieu jaloux. Il ne pardonnera pas votre désobéissance ni vos péchés.
And Joshua said to the people, Indeed you will not be able to serve the Lord, for God is holy; and he being jealous will not forgive your sins and your transgressions.
20 Si vous abandonnez Yahvé pour servir des dieux étrangers, il se retournera contre vous et vous fera du mal, et il vous consumera après vous avoir fait du bien. »
Whenever you shall forsake the Lord and serve other gods, then he shall come upon you and afflict you, and consume you, because he has done you good.
21 Le peuple dit à Josué: « Non, mais nous servirons Yahvé. »
And the people said to Joshua, Nay, but we will serve the Lord.
22 Josué dit au peuple: « Vous êtes témoins contre vous-mêmes que vous avez choisi l'Éternel vous-mêmes, pour le servir. » Ils ont dit: « Nous sommes des témoins. »
And Joshua said to the people, You [are] witnesses against yourselves, that you have chosen the Lord to serve him.
23 « Maintenant, éloignez les dieux étrangers qui sont au milieu de vous, et inclinez votre cœur vers Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël. »
And now take away the strange gods that are among you, and set your heart right toward the Lord God of Israel.
24 Le peuple dit à Josué: « Nous servirons Yahvé, notre Dieu, et nous écouterons sa voix. »
And the people said to Joshua, We will serve the Lord, and we will listen to his voice.
25 Ce jour-là, Josué fit alliance avec le peuple, et il établit pour lui une loi et une ordonnance à Sichem.
So Joshua made a covenant with the people on that day, and gave them a law and an ordinance in Selo before the tabernacle of the God of Israel.
26 Josué écrivit ces paroles dans le livre de la loi de Dieu. Il prit une grande pierre et la plaça là, sous le chêne qui était près du sanctuaire de l'Éternel.
And he wrote these words in the book of the laws of God: and Joshua took a great stone, and set it up under the oak before the Lord.
27 Josué dit à tout le peuple: « Voici que cette pierre servira de témoin contre nous, car elle a entendu toutes les paroles que l'Éternel nous a adressées. Elle sera donc un témoin contre vous, de peur que vous ne reniiez votre Dieu. »
And Joshua said to the people, Behold, this stone shall be among you for a witness, for it has heard all the words that have been spoken to it by the Lord; for he has spoken to you this day; and this [stone] shall be among you for a witness in the last days, whenever you shall deal falsely with the Lord my God.
28 Josué renvoya donc le peuple, chacun vers son héritage.
And Joshua dismissed the people, and they went every man to his place.
29 Après ces choses, Josué, fils de Nun, serviteur de l'Éternel, mourut, âgé de cent dix ans.
And it came to pass after these things that Joshua the son of Naue the servant of the Lord died, [at the age] of a hundred and ten years.
30 On l'enterra dans le territoire de son héritage, à Timnathsérah, dans la montagne d'Ephraïm, au nord de la montagne de Gaash.
And they buried him by the borders of his inheritance in Thamnasarach in the mount of Ephraim, northward of the mount of Galaad.
31 Israël avait servi l'Éternel pendant toute la durée de Josué et pendant toute la durée des anciens qui avaient survécu à Josué, et il avait connu toute l'œuvre de l'Éternel, qu'il avait accomplie pour Israël.
And Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that lived as long as Joshua, and all that knew all the works of the Lord which he wrought for Israel.
32 Ils enterrèrent les ossements de Joseph, que les enfants d'Israël avaient fait monter d'Égypte, à Sichem, dans le terrain que Jacob avait acheté aux fils de Hamor, père de Sichem, pour cent pièces d'argent. Ils devinrent l'héritage des enfants de Joseph.
And the children of Israel brought up the bones of Joseph out of Egypt, and buried [them] in Sicima, in the portion of the land which Jacob bought of the Amorites who lived in Sicima for a hundred ewe-lambs; and he gave it to Joseph for a portion.
33 Eléazar, fils d'Aaron, mourut. On l'enterra dans la colline de Phinées, son fils, qui lui avait été donnée dans la montagne d'Ephraïm.
And it came to pass afterwards that Eleazar the high-priest the son of Aaron died, and was buried in Gabaar of Phinees his son, which he gave him in mount Ephraim.
