Josué 10
1 Adoni Tsédek, roi de Jérusalem, apprit que Josué avait pris Aï et l'avait dévouée par interdit, comme il avait fait à Jéricho et à son roi, et que les habitants de Gabaon avaient fait la paix avec Israël et se trouvaient au milieu d'eux.
Now it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek, the king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured 'Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; [that] as he had done to Jericho and its king, so had he done to 'Ai and its king; and that the inhabitants of Gib'on had made peace with Israel, and were in the midst of them:
2 Il eut une grande crainte, parce que Gabaon était une grande ville, une des villes royales, parce qu'elle était plus grande qu'Aï, et que tous ses hommes étaient puissants.
That they were greatly afraid; because Gib'on was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than 'Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.
3 Alors Adoni-Zedek, roi de Jérusalem, envoya dire à Hoham, roi d'Hébron, à Piram, roi de Jarmuth, à Japhia, roi de Lakis, et à Debir, roi d'Églon:
Therefore Adoni-zedek the king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham the king of Hebron, and unto Piram the king of Yarmuth, and unto Yaphia', the king of Lachish, and unto Debir the king of 'Eglon, saying,
4 « Montez vers moi et aidez-moi. Frappons Gabaon, car ils ont fait la paix avec Josué et avec les enfants d'Israël. »
Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gib'on; for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.
5 Alors les cinq rois des Amoréens, le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d'Hébron, le roi de Jarmuth, le roi de Lakis et le roi d'Églon, se rassemblèrent et montèrent, eux et toutes leurs armées, ils campèrent contre Gabaon et lui firent la guerre.
And the five kings of the Emorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Yarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of 'Eglon, assembled themselves together, and went up, they and all their camps, and encamped before Gib'on, and made war against it.
6 Les hommes de Gabaon envoyèrent dire à Josué, au camp de Guilgal: « N'abandonne pas tes serviteurs! Monte vite vers nous et sauve-nous! Aide-nous, car tous les rois des Amoréens qui habitent dans la montagne se sont rassemblés contre nous. »
And the men of Gib'on sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Do not withdraw thy hand from thy servants: come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us; for all the kings of the Emorites that dwell in the mountains are assembled together against us.
7 Et Josué monta de Guilgal, lui et toute l'armée avec lui, y compris tous les vaillants hommes.
And Joshua went up from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor.
8 Yahvé dit à Josué: « Ne les crains pas, car je les ai livrés entre tes mains. Pas un seul d'entre eux ne tiendra devant toi. »
And the Lord said unto Joshua, Be not afraid of them; for into thy hand have I delivered them: there shall not stand a man of them before thee.
9 Josué vint donc à eux soudainement. Il marcha toute la nuit depuis Guilgal.
And Joshua came unto them suddenly; the whole night he went up from Gilgal.
10 Yahvé les confondit devant Israël. Il leur fit subir une grande défaite à Gabaon, les poursuivit par le chemin de la montée de Beth Horon, et les battit jusqu'à Azéka et à Makkéda.
And the Lord brought them in confusion before Israel, and they smote them with a great slaughter at Gib'on, and pursued them by the way of the ascent to Beth-choron, and smote them up to 'Azekah, and up to Makkedah.
11 Comme ils fuyaient devant Israël, alors qu'ils étaient à la descente de Beth Horon, Yahvé lança du ciel sur eux de grosses pierres jusqu'à Azéka, et ils moururent. Ceux qui moururent à cause des pierres de grêle furent plus nombreux que ceux que les enfants d'Israël tuèrent par l'épée.
And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, while they were in the declivity of Beth-choron, that the Lord cast down upon them great stones from heaven, up to 'Azekah, and they died: there were more who died by means of the hailstones than those whom the children of Israel had slain with the sword.
12 Et Josué parla à Yahvé, le jour où Yahvé livra les Amoréens aux enfants d'Israël. Il dit aux yeux d'Israël: « Soleil, arrête-toi sur Gibéon! Toi, lune, arrête-toi dans la vallée d'Aijalon! »
Then spoke Joshua to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered up the Emorites before the children of Israel, and he said before the eyes of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gib'on; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ayalon.
13 Le soleil s'arrêta, et la lune resta immobile, jusqu'à ce que la nation se soit vengée de ses ennemis. N'est-ce pas écrit dans le livre de Jashar? Le soleil resta au milieu du ciel, et ne se pressa pas de se coucher, pendant tout un jour.
And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Yashar? And the sun stood still in the midst of the heavens, and hastened not to go down about a whole day.
14 Il n'y a pas eu de jour comme celui-là, ni avant ni après, où l'Éternel ait écouté la voix d'un homme, car l'Éternel a combattu pour Israël.
And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the Lord hearkened unto the voice of a man; for the Lord fought for Israel.
15 Josué retourna, et tout Israël avec lui, au camp, à Guilgal.
And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
16 Ces cinq rois s'enfuirent, et se cachèrent dans la caverne de Makkéda.
But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.
17 On fit dire à Josué: « On a trouvé les cinq rois, cachés dans la caverne de Makkéda. »
And it was told to Joshua, saying, The five kings have been found hidden in the cave at Makkedah.
18 Josué dit: « Faites rouler de grosses pierres pour couvrir l'entrée de la grotte, et placez des hommes à côté pour les garder;
And Joshua said, Roll great stones to the mouth of the cave, and set men over it to guard them;
19 mais ne restez pas là. Poursuivez vos ennemis et attaquez-les par derrière. Ne les laisse pas entrer dans leurs villes, car Yahvé ton Dieu les a livrés entre tes mains. »
But you, do ye not stay, pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them: suffer them not to enter into their cities; for the Lord your God hath delivered them into your hand.
20 Lorsque Josué et les enfants d'Israël eurent achevé de les tuer par un très grand carnage, jusqu'à ce qu'ils fussent consumés, et que ce qui restait d'eux fut entré dans les villes fortifiées,
And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of smiting them with a very great defeat, till they were all spent, and those that escaped had fled from them and entered into the fortified cities,
21 tout le peuple retourna en paix au camp de Josué à Makkéda. Personne ne remua la langue contre aucun des enfants d'Israël.
That all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: no one pointed against any man of the children of Israel his tongue.
22 Alors Josué dit: « Ouvrez l'entrée de la caverne, et amenez-moi ces cinq rois qui en sont sortis. »
Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out unto me those five kings out of the cave.
23 Ils firent ainsi, et lui amenèrent ces cinq rois hors de la caverne: le roi de Jérusalem, le roi d'Hébron, le roi de Jarmuth, le roi de Lakis et le roi d'Églon.
And they did so, and brought forth unto him those five kings out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Yarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of 'Eglon.
24 Lorsqu'ils eurent amené ces rois devant Josué, celui-ci appela tous les hommes d'Israël et dit aux chefs des hommes de guerre qui l'accompagnaient: « Approchez. Mettez vos pieds sur la nuque de ces rois. » Ils s'approchèrent, et mirent leurs pieds sur leur cou.
And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon their necks.
25 Josué leur dit: « N'ayez pas peur et ne vous effrayez pas. Soyez forts et courageux, car c'est ce que Yahvé fera à tous vos ennemis contre lesquels vous combattrez. »
And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be disheartened, be strong and of good courage; for thus will the Lord do unto all your enemies against whom ye fight.
26 Ensuite, Josué les frappa, les mit à mort et les pendit à cinq arbres. Ils restèrent suspendus aux arbres jusqu'au soir.
And Joshua smote them afterward, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees; and they remained hanging upon the trees until the evening.
27 Au moment où le soleil se couchait, Josué donna l'ordre de les descendre des arbres, de les jeter dans la grotte où ils s'étaient cachés et de poser sur l'entrée de la grotte de grandes pierres qui subsistent encore aujourd'hui.
And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hidden; and they placed great stones upon the mouth of the cave, [which remain] even until this very day.
28 Ce jour-là, Josué prit Makkéda et la frappa du tranchant de l'épée, avec son roi. Il la détruisit entièrement, ainsi que tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient. Il ne laissa subsister personne. Il fit au roi de Makkéda ce qu'il avait fait au roi de Jéricho.
And Joshua captured Makkedah on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and its king he devoted, them, and all the souls that were therein; he left none that escaped; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done unto the king of Jericho.
29 Josué passa de Makkéda, et tout Israël avec lui, à Libna, et il combattit Libna.
Then did Joshua, and all Israel with him, pass from Makkedah unto Libnah; and he fought against Libnah;
30 Yahvé la livra aussi, avec son roi, entre les mains d'Israël. Il la frappa du tranchant de l'épée, ainsi que tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient. Il n'y laissa personne. Il fit à son roi ce qu'il avait fait au roi de Jéricho.
And the Lord delivered it also into the hand of Israel, with its king; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he left none in it that escaped; and he did unto its king as he had done unto the king of Jericho.
31 Josué passa de Libna, et tout Israël avec lui, à Lakis; il campa devant elle, et la combattit.
And Joshua, and all Israel with him, passed from Libnah unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it;
32 Yahvé livra Lakis entre les mains d'Israël. Il la prit le second jour, et la frappa du tranchant de l'épée, avec tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient, selon tout ce qu'il avait fait à Libna.
And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel; and he captured it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein: just as he had done to Libnah.
33 Alors Horam, roi de Guézer, monta au secours de Lakis; et Josué le frappa, lui et son peuple, jusqu'à ce qu'il ne lui restât plus personne.
Then came up Horam the king of Gezer to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none that escaped.
34 Josué passa de Lakis, et tout Israël avec lui, à Églon; ils campèrent devant elle et la combattirent.
And Joshua and all Israel with him passed from Lachish unto 'Eglon; and they encamped against it, and fought against it;
35 Ils la prirent ce jour-là, et la frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée. Il dévora par interdit tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient ce jour-là, selon tout ce qu'il avait fait à Lakis.
And they captured it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword; and all the souls that were therein he devoted on that day: just as he had done to Lachish.
36 Josué monta d'Églon, et tout Israël avec lui, à Hébron, et ils combattirent contre elle.
And Joshua and all Israel with him went up from 'Eglon unto Hebron; and they fought against it;
37 Ils la prirent et la frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée, avec son roi, toutes ses villes et tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient. Il ne laissa rien subsister, selon tout ce qu'il avait fait à Églon, et il la détruisit par interdit, ainsi que tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient.
And they captured it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and its king, and all its cities, and all the souls that were therein; he left none that escaped, just as he had done to 'Eglon; and he devoted it, and all the souls that were therein.
38 Josué retourna, et tout Israël avec lui, à Debir, et il l'attaqua.
And Joshua and all Israel with him returned to Debir; and fought against it;
39 Il la prit, avec son roi et toutes ses villes. Ils les frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée et dévouèrent par interdit tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient. Il ne laissa personne en vie. Ce qu'il avait fait à Hébron, il le fit à Debir et à son roi, et à Libna et à son roi.
And he captured it, and its king, and all its cities; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and devoted all the souls that were therein; he left none that escaped: as he had done to Hebron, so did he to Debir and to its king; and as he had done to Libnah and to its king.
40 Josué frappa tout le pays, la montagne, le midi, la plaine, les coteaux, et tous leurs rois. Il ne laissa subsister personne, mais il dévora tout ce qui respirait, comme l'avait ordonné Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël.
And Joshua smote all the country, the mountain, and the south, and the lowlands, and the declivities, and all their kings; he left none that escaped; and all that breathed he utterly destroyed, as the Lord, the God of Israel had commanded.
41 Josué les battit depuis Kadesh Barnea jusqu'à Gaza, et tout le pays de Gosen jusqu'à Gabaon.
And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea' even unto Gazzah, and all the country of Goshen, even up to Gib'on.
42 Josué prit tous ces rois et leur pays en une seule fois, car l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël, combattait pour Israël.
And all these kings and their land did Joshua capture at one time; because the Lord, the God of Israel fought for Israel.
43 Josué retourna, et tout Israël avec lui, au camp, à Guilgal.
And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
