1 Pilate prit alors Jésus et le fit fouetter.
So Pilate then took Jesus, and flogged him.
2 Les soldats tordirent des épines pour en faire une couronne qu'ils mirent sur sa tête, et ils le revêtirent d'un vêtement de pourpre.
The soldiers twisted thorns into a crown, and put it on his head, and dressed him in a purple garment.
3 Ils ne cessaient de dire: « Salut, roi des Juifs! » et de le gifler.
And they kept coming up to him and saying, "Greetings, King of the Jews." and they struck him with their hands.
4 Alors Pilate sortit de nouveau, et leur dit: « Voici que je vous l'amène, afin que vous sachiez que je ne trouve aucun motif d'accusation contre lui. »
Then Pilate went out again, and said to them, "Look, I am bringing him out to you, that you may know that I find no basis for a charge against him."
5 Jésus sortit donc, portant la couronne d'épines et le vêtement de pourpre. Pilate leur dit: « Voici l'homme! »
Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. And he said to them, "Look, here is the man."
6 Les principaux sacrificateurs et les huissiers, l'ayant vu, poussèrent des cris et dirent: « Crucifie! Crucifie! » Pilate leur dit: « Prenez-le vous-mêmes et crucifiez-le, car je ne trouve aucun motif d'accusation contre lui. »
When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him, they shouted, saying, "Crucify. Crucify." Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves, and crucify him, for I find no basis for a charge against him."
7 Les Juifs lui répondirent: « Nous avons une loi, et c'est par notre loi qu'il doit mourir, parce qu'il s'est fait Fils de Dieu. »
The Jewish leaders answered him, "We have a law, and by that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God."
8 Lorsque Pilate entendit cette parole, il eut encore plus peur.
When therefore Pilate heard this saying, he was more afraid.
9 Il entra de nouveau dans le prétoire, et dit à Jésus: « D'où es-tu? » Mais Jésus ne lui répondit pas.
He entered into the Praetorium again, and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave him no answer.
10 Pilate lui dit alors: « Ne me parles-tu pas? Ne sais-tu pas que j'ai le pouvoir de te libérer et que j'ai le pouvoir de te crucifier? »
Pilate therefore said to him, "Are you not speaking to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and have power to crucify you?"
11 Jésus répondit: « Vous n'auriez aucun pouvoir sur moi, si cela ne vous était donné d'en haut. C'est pourquoi celui qui m'a livré à vous a un plus grand péché. »
Jesus answered, "You would have no power at all against me, unless it were given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me to you has greater sin."
12 A ce moment-là, Pilate cherchait à le relâcher, mais les Juifs s'écriaient: « Si tu relâches cet homme, tu n'es pas l'ami de César! Quiconque se fait roi parle contre César! »
At this, Pilate was seeking to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, saying, "If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend. Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar."
13 Dès que Pilate eut entendu ces paroles, il fit sortir Jésus et s'assit sur le siège du tribunal, en un lieu appelé « le Pavé », mais en hébreu, « Gabbatha ».
When Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called "The Pavement," but in Hebrew, "Gabbatha."
14 Or, c'était le jour de la préparation de la Pâque, vers la sixième heure. Il dit aux Juifs: « Voici votre Roi! »
Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, at about noon. He said to the Jewish leaders, "Look, here is your King."
15 Ils s'écrièrent: « Qu'on le chasse! Qu'on l'emmène! Crucifiez-le! » Pilate leur a dit: « Crucifierai-je votre Roi? » Les chefs des prêtres ont répondu: « Nous n'avons pas d'autre roi que César! »
They shouted, "Away with him. Away with him. Crucify him." Pilate said to them, "Should I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar."
16 Alors, il le leur livra pour qu'il soit crucifié. Ils prirent donc Jésus et l'emmenèrent.
So then he delivered him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus.
17 Il sortit, portant sa croix, pour se rendre au lieu appelé « lieu du crâne », qui se nomme en hébreu « Golgotha »,
And he went out, carrying the cross himself, to the place called "The Place of a Skull," which is called in Hebrew, "Golgotha,"
18 où ils le crucifièrent, ainsi que deux autres personnes, de chaque côté, et Jésus au milieu.
where they crucified him, and with him two others, on either side one, and Jesus in the middle.
19 Pilate écrivit aussi un titre, et le mit sur la croix. Il y était écrit: « JÉSUS DE NAZARETH, LE ROI DES JUIFS ».
Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. There was written, "JESUS THE NAZOREAN, THE KING OF THE JEWS."
20 Beaucoup de Juifs lisaient ce titre, car le lieu où Jésus avait été crucifié était proche de la ville; et il était écrit en hébreu, en latin et en grec.
Therefore many Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.
21 Les principaux sacrificateurs des Juifs dirent donc à Pilate: « N'écris pas: « Le roi des Juifs », mais: « Il a dit: « Je suis le roi des Juifs »".
The chief priests of the Jewish people therefore said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'he said, I am King of the Jews.'"
22 Pilate répondit: « Ce que j'ai écrit, je l'ai écrit. »
Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."
23 Les soldats, après avoir crucifié Jésus, prirent ses vêtements et en firent quatre parts, une part pour chaque soldat, et aussi la tunique. Or la tunique était sans couture, tissée depuis le haut jusqu'au bas.
Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his clothes and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
24 Ils se dirent alors les uns aux autres: « Ne la déchirons pas, mais tirons au sort à qui elle appartiendra », afin que s'accomplisse l'Écriture, qui dit, « Ils ont partagé mes vêtements entre eux. Ils ont tiré au sort mes vêtements. » C'est pourquoi les soldats ont fait ces choses.
Then they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to decide whose it will be," that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which says, "They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they cast a lot." Therefore the soldiers did these things.
25 Mais près de la croix de Jésus se tenaient sa mère, la sœur de sa mère, Marie, femme de Clopas, et Marie-Madeleine.
But there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 Jésus, voyant sa mère et le disciple qu'il aimait qui se tenaient là, dit à sa mère: « Femme, voici ton fils. »
Therefore when Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, "Woman, look, your son."
27 Puis il dit au disciple: « Voici ta mère. » Dès cette heure-là, le disciple la prit chez lui.
Then he said to the disciple, "Look, your mother." From that hour, the disciple took her to his own home.
28 Après cela, Jésus, voyant que tout était maintenant achevé, afin que l'Écriture fût accomplie, dit: « J'ai soif! »
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I am thirsty."
29 Un vase plein de vinaigre était placé là; on mit une éponge pleine de vinaigre sur de l'hysope, et on la porta à sa bouche.
A vessel full of sour wine was set there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop, and held it at his mouth.
30 Lorsque Jésus eut reçu le vinaigre, il dit: « Tout est accompli. » Puis il baissa la tête et rendit l'esprit.
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished." He bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.
31 Les Juifs, comme c'était le jour de la préparation, afin que les corps ne restent pas sur la croix pendant le sabbat (car ce sabbat était particulier), demandèrent à Pilate qu'on leur rompe les jambes et qu'on les emporte.
Therefore the Jewish leaders, because it was the Preparation Day, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special one), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
32 Les soldats vinrent donc briser les jambes du premier et de l'autre qui avait été crucifié avec lui.
Therefore the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him;
33 Mais lorsqu'ils arrivèrent à Jésus et qu'ils virent qu'il était déjà mort, ils ne lui brisèrent pas les jambes.
but when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
34 Mais l'un des soldats lui perça le côté avec une lance, et aussitôt il sortit du sang et de l'eau.
However one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
35 Celui qui a vu a rendu son témoignage, et son témoignage est vrai. Il sait qu'il dit la vérité, afin que vous croyiez.
He who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, that you may believe.
36 Car ces choses sont arrivées afin que s'accomplisse l'Écriture: « Aucun de ses os ne sera brisé. »
For these things happened, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, "A bone of him will not be broken."
37 Une autre Écriture dit encore: « Ils regarderont celui qu'ils ont percé. »
Again another Scripture says, "They will look on him whom they pierced."
38 Après cela, Joseph d'Arimathée, qui était disciple de Jésus, mais en secret par crainte des Juifs, demanda à Pilate de pouvoir emporter le corps de Jésus. Pilate lui donna la permission. Il vint donc et emporta le corps de Jésus.
After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jewish leaders, asked of Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission. He came therefore and took away his body.
39 Nicodème, qui était d'abord venu voir Jésus de nuit, vint aussi apporter un mélange de myrrhe et d'aloès, soit environ cent livres romaines.
Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.
40 Ils prirent donc le corps de Jésus, et le lièrent avec les aromates dans des linges, selon la coutume juive d'ensevelir.
So they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, according to Jewish burial practice.
41 Or, à l'endroit où il avait été crucifié, il y avait un jardin. Dans ce jardin se trouvait un tombeau neuf, dans lequel on n'avait encore jamais mis d'homme.
Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden. In the garden was a new tomb in which no one had ever yet been placed.
42 Alors, à cause du jour de la préparation des Juifs (car le tombeau était proche), ils y déposèrent Jésus.
Then because of the Jewish Preparation Day (for the tomb was nearby) they put Jesus there.
