1 Après avoir prononcé ces paroles, Jésus sortit avec ses disciples de l'autre côté du torrent de Cédron, où il y avait un jardin, dans lequel il entra avec ses disciples.
When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, and his disciples.
2 Judas, qui le trahissait, connaissait aussi ce lieu, car Jésus s'y réunissait souvent avec ses disciples.
And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus often resorted thither with his disciples.
3 Judas donc, ayant pris un détachement de soldats et d'officiers des principaux sacrificateurs et des pharisiens, y vint avec des lanternes, des torches et des armes.
Judas then, having received a band [of men] and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns, and torches, and weapons.
4 Jésus donc, sachant tout ce qui lui arrivait, sortit et leur dit: « Qui cherchez-vous? »
Jesus therefore, knowing all things that were coming upon him, went forth, and said to them, Whom seek ye?
5 Ils lui répondirent: « Jésus de Nazareth. » Jésus leur dit: « Je suis lui. » Judas, qui le livrait, se tenait aussi avec eux.
They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith to them, I am [he]. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them.
6 Lorsqu'il leur dit: « C'est moi », ils reculèrent et tombèrent à terre.
As soon then as he had said to them, I am [he], they went backward, and fell to the ground.
7 Il leur demanda donc à nouveau: « Qui cherchez-vous? » Ils ont dit: « Jésus de Nazareth. »
Then he asked them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.
8 Jésus répondit: « Je vous ai dit que c'était moi. Si donc vous me cherchez, laissez ceux-là s'en aller, »
Jesus answered, I have told you that I am [he]: If therefore ye seek me, let these go away:
9 afin que s'accomplisse la parole qu'il a dite: « De ceux que tu m'as donnés, je n'ai perdu aucun. »
That the saying might be fulfilled which he spoke, Of them whom thou gavest to me, I have lost none.
10 Simon-Pierre, ayant une épée, la tira, frappa le serviteur du souverain sacrificateur, et lui coupa l'oreille droite. Le nom du serviteur était Malchus.
Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
11 Jésus dit alors à Pierre: « Remets l'épée dans son fourreau. La coupe que le Père m'a donnée, ne la boirai-je pas? »
Then said Jesus to Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
12 Le détachement, le commandant et les officiers des Juifs se saisirent donc de Jésus, le lièrent,
Then the band, and the captain, and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,
13 et le conduisirent d'abord chez Anne, car il était beau-père de Caïphe, qui était grand prêtre cette année-là.
And led him away to Annas first, (for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was the high priest that same year.)
14 Or, c'est Caïphe qui avait conseillé aux Juifs qu'il convenait qu'un seul homme périsse pour le peuple.
Now Caiaphas was he who gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
15 Simon Pierre suivait Jésus, ainsi qu'un autre disciple. Or ce disciple était connu du grand prêtre, et il entra avec Jésus dans la cour du grand prêtre;
And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and [so did] another disciple. That disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.
16 mais Pierre se tenait à la porte, dehors. L'autre disciple, qui était connu du grand prêtre, sortit donc, parla à la servante qui gardait la porte, et fit entrer Pierre.
But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple who was known to the high priest, and spoke to her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
17 Alors la servante qui gardait la porte dit à Pierre: « Es-tu aussi un des disciples de cet homme? » Il a dit: « Je ne le suis pas. »
Then saith the damsel that kept the door to Peter, Art not thou also [one] of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.
18 Or les serviteurs et les officiers se tenaient là, ayant fait un feu de charbons, car il faisait froid. Ils se chauffaient. Pierre était avec eux, debout et se réchauffant.
And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; (for it was cold) and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.
19 Le grand prêtre interrogea donc Jésus sur ses disciples et sur son enseignement.
The high priest then asked Jesus concerning his disciples, and concerning his doctrine.
20 Jésus lui répondit: « J'ai parlé ouvertement au monde. J'ai toujours enseigné dans les synagogues et dans le temple, là où les Juifs se réunissent toujours. Je n'ai rien dit en secret.
Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.
21 Pourquoi m'interroges-tu? Demandez à ceux qui m'ont entendu ce que je leur ai dit. Voici, ils savent les choses que j'ai dites. »
Why dost thou ask me? ask them who heard me, what I have said to them: behold, they know what I have said.
22 Lorsqu'il eut dit cela, l'un des officiers qui se tenait là frappa Jésus de la main, en disant: « C'est ainsi que tu réponds au grand prêtre? »
And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers who stood by, struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?
23 Jésus lui répondit: « Si j'ai mal parlé, témoigne du mal; mais si j'ai bien parlé, pourquoi me frappes-tu? »
Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear testimony of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?
24 Annas l'envoya lié à Caïphe, le grand prêtre.
(Now Annas had sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.)
25 Or Simon-Pierre était debout et se chauffait. Ils lui dirent donc: « Tu n'es pas aussi un de ses disciples, n'est-ce pas? » Il l'a nié et a dit: « Je ne le suis pas. »
And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore to him, Art not thou also [one] of his disciples? He denied [it], and said, I am not.
26 Un des serviteurs du grand prêtre, parent de celui à qui Pierre avait coupé l'oreille, dit: « Ne t'ai-je pas vu avec lui dans le jardin? »
One of the servants of the high priest (being the kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off) saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
27 Pierre le renia donc de nouveau, et aussitôt le coq chanta.
Peter then denied again, and immediately the cock crowed.
28 Ils conduisirent donc Jésus de chez Caïphe au prétoire. C'était de bonne heure, et eux-mêmes n'entraient pas dans le prétoire, afin de ne pas se souiller, mais de pouvoir manger la Pâque.
Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment-hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.
29 Pilate sortit donc vers eux et dit: « Quelle accusation portez-vous contre cet homme? »
Pilate then went out to them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?
30 Ils lui répondirent: « Si cet homme n'était pas un malfaiteur, nous ne te l'aurions pas livré. »
They answered and said to him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee.
31 Pilate leur dit donc: « Prenez-le vous-mêmes, et jugez-le selon votre loi. » C'est pourquoi les Juifs lui dirent: « Il nous est interdit de mettre quelqu'un à mort »,
Then said Pilate to them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
32 afin que s'accomplisse la parole de Jésus, qu'il avait prononcée, en indiquant par quel genre de mort il devait mourir.
That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying what death he should die.
33 Pilate entra donc de nouveau dans le prétoire, appela Jésus, et lui dit: « Es-tu le roi des Juifs? »
Then Pilate entered into the judgment-hall again, and called Jesus, and said to him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
34 Jésus lui répondit: « Tu dis cela tout seul, ou bien d'autres t'ont-ils parlé de moi? »
Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing from thyself, or did others tell it thee concerning me?
35 Pilate répondit: « Je ne suis pas Juif, n'est-ce pas? Ta propre nation et les chefs des prêtres t'ont livré à moi. Qu'as-tu fait? »
Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee to me: What hast thou done?
36 Jésus répondit: « Mon Royaume n'est pas de ce monde. Si mon Royaume était de ce monde, alors mes serviteurs combattraient, pour que je ne sois pas livré aux Juifs. Mais maintenant, mon Royaume n'est pas d'ici-bas. »
Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
37 Pilate lui dit donc: « Es-tu donc un roi? » Jésus répondit: « Vous dites que je suis un roi. C'est pour cela que je suis né, et c'est pour cela que je suis venu dans le monde, afin de rendre témoignage à la vérité. Tous ceux qui sont de la vérité écoutent ma voix. »
Pilate therefore said to him, Art thou a King then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a King. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
38 Pilate lui dit: « Qu'est-ce que la vérité? » Après avoir dit cela, il sortit de nouveau vers les Juifs, et leur dit: « Je ne trouve aucun motif d'accusation contre lui.
Pilate saith to him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them, I find in him no fault.
39 Mais vous avez pour coutume que je vous livre quelqu'un à la Pâque. Voulez-vous donc que je vous relâche le roi des Juifs? »
But ye have a custom that I should release to you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release to you the King of the Jews?
40 Alors ils crièrent tous à nouveau, disant: « Pas cet homme, mais Barabbas! » Or Barabbas était un brigand.
Then they all cried again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
