1 Or, un homme était malade, Lazare, de Béthanie, du village de Marie et de sa sœur Marthe.
Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.
2 C'était cette Marie, qui avait oint le Seigneur de parfum et lui avait essuyé les pieds avec ses cheveux, dont le frère Lazare était malade.
It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick.
3 Les sœurs envoyèrent donc vers lui, en disant: « Seigneur, voici que celui pour qui tu as une grande affection est malade. »
The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, "Lord, look, the one you love is sick."
4 Mais Jésus, ayant entendu cela, dit: « Cette maladie n'est pas pour la mort, mais pour la gloire de Dieu, afin que le Fils de Dieu soit glorifié par elle. »
But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God's Son may be glorified by it."
5 Or, Jésus aimait Marthe, et sa sœur, et Lazare.
Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6 Ayant donc appris que celui-ci était malade, il resta deux jours dans le lieu où il était.
When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.
7 Puis, après cela, il dit aux disciples: « Retournons en Judée. »
Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let us go into Judea again."
8 Les disciples lui demandèrent: « Rabbi, les Juifs voulaient justement te lapider. Vas-tu y retourner? »
The disciples told him, "Rabbi, the Jewish leaders were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?"
9 Jésus répondit: « N'y a-t-il pas douze heures de jour? Si un homme marche pendant le jour, il ne bronche pas, parce qu'il voit la lumière de ce monde.
Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10 Mais si un homme marche pendant la nuit, il trébuche, parce que la lumière n'est pas en lui. »
But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."
11 Il disait ces choses, et après cela, il leur dit: « Notre ami Lazare s'est endormi, mais je m'en vais afin de le réveiller de son sommeil. »
He said these things, and after that, he said to them, "Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep."
12 Les disciples dirent donc: « Seigneur, s'il s'est endormi, il se rétablira. »
Then the disciples said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."
13 Or Jésus avait parlé de sa mort, mais ils pensaient qu'il parlait de se reposer dans le sommeil.
Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.
14 Jésus leur dit donc clairement: Lazare est mort.
So Jesus said to them plainly then, "Lazarus is dead.
15 Je me réjouis pour vous de n'avoir pas été là, afin que vous croyiez. Néanmoins, allons vers lui. »
I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let us go to him."
16 Thomas donc, qu'on appelle Didyme, dit à ses compagnons d'infortune: « Allons aussi, afin de mourir avec lui. »
Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us go also, that we may die with him."
17 Lorsque Jésus arriva, il trouva qu'il était déjà dans le tombeau depuis quatre jours.
So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.
18 Or Béthanie était près de Jérusalem, à environ quinze stades.
Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away.
19 Beaucoup de Juifs s'étaient joints aux femmes qui entouraient Marthe et Marie, pour les consoler au sujet de leur frère.
Many of the Jewish people had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.
20 Marthe, ayant appris que Jésus arrivait, alla à sa rencontre, mais Marie resta dans la maison.
Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.
21 Marthe dit alors à Jésus: « Seigneur, si tu avais été là, mon frère ne serait pas mort.
Therefore Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother would not have died.
22 Maintenant encore, je sais que tout ce que tu demanderas à Dieu, Dieu te le donnera. »
Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you."
23 Jésus lui dit: « Ton frère ressuscitera. »
Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."
24 Marthe lui dit: « Je sais qu'il ressuscitera à la résurrection, au dernier jour. »
Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."
25 Jésus lui dit: « Je suis la résurrection et la vie. Celui qui croit en moi vivra, même s'il meurt.
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.
And whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" (aiōn g165)
27 Elle lui dit: « Oui, Seigneur. Je suis arrivée à croire que tu es le Christ, le Fils de Dieu, celui qui vient dans le monde. »
She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, he who comes into the world."
28 Après avoir dit cela, elle s'en alla et appela secrètement Marie, sa sœur, en disant: « Le Maître est ici et il t'appelle. »
And when she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, "The Teacher is here, and is calling you."
29 Ayant entendu cela, elle se leva promptement et alla vers lui.
When she heard this, she arose quickly, and went to him.
30 Or, Jésus n'était pas encore entré dans le village, mais il se trouvait à l'endroit où Marthe l'avait rencontré.
Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him.
31 Alors les Juifs qui étaient avec elle dans la maison et la consolaient, voyant que Marie se levait rapidement et sortait, la suivirent en disant: « Elle va au sépulcre pour y pleurer. »
Then the Judeans who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
32 C'est pourquoi, lorsque Marie arriva au lieu où se trouvait Jésus et qu'elle le vit, elle tomba à ses pieds et lui dit: « Seigneur, si tu avais été là, mon frère ne serait pas mort. »
Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother would not have died."
33 Voyant donc qu'elle pleurait, et que les Juifs qui étaient venus avec elle pleuraient, Jésus poussa un gémissement en esprit et fut troublé,
When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Judeans weeping who came with her, he was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled,
34 et dit: « Où l'avez-vous déposé? » Ils lui ont dit: « Seigneur, viens et vois. »
and said, "Where have you put him?" They told him, "Lord, come and see."
35 Jésus a pleuré.
Jesus wept.
36 Les Juifs disaient donc: « Voyez quelle affection il avait pour lui! »
The Judeans therefore said, "See how he loved him."
37 Certains d'entre eux disaient: « Cet homme, qui a ouvert les yeux de l'aveugle, n'aurait-il pas pu aussi empêcher cet homme de mourir? »
But some of them said, "Could not this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?"
38 Jésus, gémissant de nouveau en lui-même, se rendit au sépulcre. C`était une caverne, et une pierre était posée contre elle.
So Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
39 Jésus dit: « Ôtez la pierre. » Marthe, la sœur de celui qui était mort, lui dit: « Seigneur, il y a déjà une odeur nauséabonde, car il y a quatre jours qu'il est mort. »
Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."
40 Jésus lui dit: « Ne t'ai-je pas dit que si tu crois, tu verras la gloire de Dieu? »
Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see God's glory?"
41 Ils ôtèrent donc la pierre de l'endroit où était couché le mort. Jésus leva les yeux et dit: « Père, je te remercie de m'avoir écouté.
So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, "Father, I thank you that you listened to me.
42 Je sais que tu m'écoutes toujours, mais j'ai dit cela à cause de la foule qui se tenait là, afin qu'ils croient que tu m'as envoyé. »
I know that you always listen to me, but because of the crowd that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me."
43 Après avoir dit cela, il cria d'une voix forte: « Lazare, sors de là! »
When he had said this, he shouted with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out."
44 Celui qui était mort sortit, les pieds et les mains liés par des bandelettes, et son visage était enveloppé d'un linge. Jésus leur dit: « Libérez-le, et laissez-le aller. »
The man who had died came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Free him, and let him go."
45 C'est pourquoi beaucoup de Juifs, qui étaient venus auprès de Marie et qui avaient vu ce que Jésus faisait, crurent en lui.
Therefore many of the Judeans, who came to Mary and had seen the things which he did, believed in him.
46 Mais quelques-uns d'entre eux s'en allèrent chez les pharisiens et leur racontèrent les choses que Jésus avait faites.
But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.
47 Alors les principaux sacrificateurs et les pharisiens tinrent conseil, et dirent: « Que faisons-nous? Car cet homme fait beaucoup de miracles.
The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? For this man does many signs.
48 Si nous le laissons ainsi, tout le monde croira en lui, et les Romains viendront nous enlever notre place et notre nation. »
If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."
49 Mais un certain Caïphe, qui était grand prêtre cette année-là, leur dit: « Vous ne savez rien du tout,
But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all,
50 et vous ne pensez pas qu'il est avantageux pour nous qu'un seul homme meure pour le peuple, et que toute la nation ne périsse pas. »
nor do you consider that it is advantageous for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish."
51 Il n'avait pas dit cela de lui-même, mais, étant grand prêtre cette année-là, il avait prophétisé que Jésus mourrait pour la nation,
Now he did not say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,
52 et non pour la nation seulement, mais aussi pour rassembler en un seul les enfants de Dieu dispersés.
and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
53 Dès ce jour, ils tinrent conseil pour le faire mourir.
So from that day on they plotted to kill him.
54 Jésus ne marchait donc plus ouvertement parmi les Juifs, mais il s'en alla de là dans le pays voisin du désert, dans une ville appelée Ephraïm. Il y resta avec ses disciples.
Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Judeans, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim; and stayed there with his disciples.
55 Or, la Pâque des Juifs était proche. Plusieurs montaient de la campagne à Jérusalem avant la Pâque, pour se purifier.
Now the Jewish Passover was near, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.
56 Alors, ils cherchaient Jésus et, debout dans le temple, ils se disaient les uns aux autres: « Que pensez-vous qu'il ne vienne pas du tout à la fête? »
Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, "What do you think—that he is not coming to the feast at all?"
57 Or, les chefs des prêtres et les pharisiens avaient ordonné que si quelqu'un savait où il se trouvait, il devait le signaler, afin qu'ils se saisissent de lui.
Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might arrest him.
