Job 38
1 Et Yahvé répondit à Job du haut du tourbillon,
Then did the Lord address Job out of the storm-wind, and said,
2 « Qui est celui qui obscurcit le conseil par des mots sans connaissance?
Who is this that casteth darkness [on my] counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Accrochez-vous comme un homme, car je t'interrogerai, puis tu me répondras!
Do but gird up like a mighty man thy loins: and I will ask thee, and do thou inform me.
4 « Où étiez-vous lorsque j'ai posé les fondations de la terre? Déclarez, si vous avez de la compréhension.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? tell it, if thou hast any understanding [of it].
5 Qui a déterminé ses mesures, si vous le savez? Ou qui a dépassé les bornes?
Who fixed her measurements, if thou knowest it? or who stretched the measuring-line over her?
6 Sur quoi ses fondations étaient-elles fixées? Ou qui a posé sa pierre angulaire,
Upon what are her foundation-pillars placed at rest? or who laid her corner-stone:
7 quand les étoiles du matin chantaient ensemble, et tous les fils de Dieu ont crié de joie?
When altogether sang the morning stars in gladness, and shouted for joy all the sons of God?
8 « Ou qui a fermé la mer avec des portes, quand il est sorti de l'utérus,
And who closed up with doors the sea, when, issuing forth, it came out of the deep bosom of the earth?
9 quand j'ai fait des nuages son vêtement, et l'a enveloppé dans une épaisse obscurité,
When I made the clouds its garment, and thick fog its swaddling-cloth,
10 marqués pour cela ma limite, fixer les barres et les portes,
And when I decreed for it my law, and set [for it] bars and doors,
11 et dit: « Vous pouvez venir ici, mais pas plus loin. Vos fières vagues seront arrêtées ici »?
And said, Thus far mayest thou come, but no farther; and here shall be stayed [thy strength] in the pride of thy waves?
12 « De ton temps, tu as donné des ordres au matin, et a permis à l'aube de connaître sa place,
Didst thou ever, in all thy days, command the morning; didst thou ever assign the morning-dawn its place:
13 pour s'emparer des extrémités de la terre, et en faire sortir les méchants?
That it might lay hold of the ends of the earth, so that the wicked might be shaken out therefrom?
14 Il est changé comme l'argile sous le sceau, et présenté comme un vêtement.
She is changed as the sealing-clay: and [all things] stand as though newly clad.
15 La lumière est cachée aux méchants. Le bras supérieur est cassé.
And from the wicked is their light withdrawn, and the high-raised arm is broken.
16 « Es-tu entré dans les sources de la mer? Ou avez-vous marché dans les recoins des profondeurs?
Didst thou ever penetrate as far as the springs of the sea? or wander through the bottom of the deep?
17 Les portes de la mort se sont-elles révélées à vous? Ou avez-vous vu les portes de l'ombre de la mort?
Were the gates of death ever laid open unto thee? or canst thou see the doors of the shadow of death?
18 As-tu compris la terre dans sa largeur? Déclarez, si vous savez tout.
Hast thou a clear understanding of the breadth of the earth? Tell it, if thou knowest it all.
19 « Quel est le chemin vers la demeure de la lumière? Quant à l'obscurité, où est sa place,
Where is the way [to the spot where] the light dwelleth? and the darkness—where is its place,
20 que vous devez le prendre à sa limite, pour que tu discernes les chemins de sa maison?
That thou mightest take each to its boundary, and that thou mightest mark the pathways to its house?
21 Tu le sais certainement, car tu es né à cette époque, et le nombre de vos jours est grand!
Thou [surely] knowest it; because thou wast then born, and the number of thy days is great!
22 Vous êtes entrés dans les entrepôts de la neige, ou avez-vous vu les entrepôts de la grêle,
Didst thou ever enter into the treasuries of the snow? or canst thou see the treasuries of the hail,
23 que j'ai réservé pour le temps de la détresse, contre le jour de la bataille et de la guerre?
Which I have reserved for the time of distress, for the day of fight and battle?
24 De quelle manière la foudre est-elle distribuée, ou le vent d'est dispersé sur la terre?
Where is the way [to the spot where] the light divideth itself, [where] the east wind is scattered over the earth?
25 Qui a creusé un canal pour les eaux de crue, ou la trajectoire de l'orage,
Who hath divided off watercourses for the overflowing rain, and a way for the lightning [that is followed by] thunders,
26 pour faire pleuvoir sur un pays où il n'y a pas d'homme, dans le désert, où il n'y a pas d'homme,
To bring rain on a land, void of men; on a wilderness wherein no son of earth [is found];
27 pour rassasier le terrain vague et désolé, pour faire pousser l'herbe tendre?
To satisfy waste and desolate lands; and to promote the growth of the tender grass?
28 La pluie a-t-elle un père? Ou qui est le père des gouttes de rosée?
Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of the dew?
29 De quel ventre la glace est-elle sortie? Qui a donné naissance à la gelée grise du ciel?
Out of whose womb cometh forth the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven—who giveth birth to it?
30 Les eaux deviennent dures comme la pierre, lorsque la surface des profondeurs est gelée.
[When] like a stone the waters are congealed, and the face of the deep is bound in fetters?
31 « Pouvez-vous lier l'amas des Pléiades, ou détacher les cordes d'Orion?
Canst thou bind together the chains of the Pleiades, or loosen the bands of Orion?
32 Peux-tu diriger les constellations dans leur saison? Ou pouvez-vous guider l'ourse avec ses oursons?
Canst thou bring forth the constellations of the zodiac, each in its season? or canst thou guide the Bear with its young?
33 Connais-tu les lois des cieux? Pouvez-vous établir sa domination sur la terre?
Knowest thou the laws of heaven? or dost thou appoint its rule on the earth?
34 « Pouvez-vous élever votre voix vers les nuages, pour que l'abondance des eaux te couvre?
Canst thou lift up to the clouds thy voice, that the abundance of waters may cover thee?
35 Peux-tu envoyer des éclairs, pour qu'ils partent? Est-ce qu'ils vous disent: « Nous y voilà »?
Canst thou send out lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here are we?
36 Qui a mis la sagesse dans les parties intérieures? Ou qui a donné de l'intelligence à l'esprit?
Who hath put wisdom in the dark clouds? or who hath given understanding to the bright meteors?
37 Qui peut compter les nuages par la sagesse? Ou qui peut verser les récipients du ciel,
Who ordaineth the skies with wisdom? or who emptieth out the bottles of heaven.
38 quand la poussière se transforme en masse, et les mottes de terre collent ensemble?
When the dust is poured out as molten metal, and the clods are made to cleave fast together?
39 « Peux-tu chasser la proie pour la lionne, ou satisfaire l'appétit des jeunes lions,
Dost thou hunt for the lioness her prey? and suppliest thou the food for the young lions,
40 quand ils sont accroupis dans leur tanière, et se mettre à l'affût dans les fourrés?
When they are couched in their lairs, rest in the thicket, lying in wait?
41 Qui fournit au corbeau sa proie, quand ses petits crient vers Dieu, et errent par manque de nourriture?
Who provideth for the raven his provision? when his young ones cry unto God, and wander about for lack of food?
