Job 29
1 Job reprit sa parabole, et dit,
And Job again took up his measure, and said,
2 « Oh! si j'étais comme dans les mois d'autrefois, comme à l'époque où Dieu veillait sur moi;
Oh that it were with me as in the months of old, as in the days, when, GOD, used to watch over me;
3 quand sa lampe brillait sur ma tête, et par sa lumière j'ai traversé les ténèbres,
When his lamp shone over my head, by whose light, I could go through darkness;
4 que j'étais dans la fleur de l'âge, quand l'amitié de Dieu était dans ma tente,
As I was, in the days of my prime, when, the intimacy of GOD, was over my tent;
5 quand le Tout-Puissant était encore avec moi, et mes enfants étaient autour de moi,
While yet the Almighty was with me, round about me, were my young men;
6 quand mes pas étaient lavés au beurre, et le rocher a versé pour moi des flots d'huile,
When my steps were bathed in milk, and, the rock, poured out beside me, rivulets of oil:
7 quand je suis sorti par la porte de la ville, quand j'ai préparé mon siège dans la rue.
When I went out to the gate unto the city, in the open place, made ready my seat,
8 Les jeunes gens m'ont vu et se sont cachés. Le vieillard s'est levé et s'est mis debout.
Young men saw me, and hid themselves, and, the aged, arose—they stood;
9 Les princes s'abstinrent de parler, et ont posé leur main sur leur bouche.
Rulers, restrained speech, and, a hand, laid they on their mouth;
10 La voix des nobles était étouffée, et leur langue collée au palais.
The voice of nobles, was hushed, and their tongue to their palate, did cleave;
11 Car lorsque l'oreille m'a entendu, elle m'a béni, et quand l'œil m'a vu, il m'a félicité,
When, the ear, heard, then it pronounced me happy, When, the eye, saw, then it bare me witness;
12 car j'ai délivré le pauvre qui criait, et l'orphelin aussi, qui n'avait personne pour l'aider,
Because I used to deliver the oppressed who was crying out for aid, the fatherless also, and him that had no helper;
13 la bénédiction de celui qui était prêt à périr est venue sur moi, et j'ai fait en sorte que le cœur de la veuve chante de joie.
The blessing of him that was ready to perish, upon me was wont to descend, and, the heart of the widow, caused I to sing for joy;
14 Je me suis revêtu de la justice, et elle m'a habillé. Ma justice était comme une robe et un diadème.
Righteousness, I put on, and it clothed me, Like a robe and turban, was my, justice;
15 J'étais les yeux des aveugles, et des pieds aux boiteux.
Eyes, became I to the, blind, and, feet to the lame, was, I!
16 J'ai été un père pour les nécessiteux. J'ai fait des recherches sur la cause de celui que je ne connaissais pas.
A father, was, I, to the needy, and, as for the cause which I knew not, I used to search it out;
17 J'ai brisé les mâchoires des injustes. et a arraché la proie de ses dents.
And I shivered the fangs of the perverse, —and, out of his teeth, I tare the prey.
18 Alors j'ai dit: « Je mourrai dans ma propre maison », Je compterai mes jours comme le sable.
Then said I, Like a stem, shall I grow old, yea, as the sand, shall I multiply days:
19 Ma racine s'étend jusqu'aux eaux. La rosée repose toute la nuit sur ma branche.
My root, is laid open to the waters, and, the dew, shall lodge for the night in my boughs;
20 Ma gloire est fraîche en moi. Mon arc est renouvelé dans ma main.
Mine honour, shall be young again with me, and, my bow, in my hand, be renewed.
21 « Les hommes m'ont écouté, ils ont attendu, et j'ai gardé le silence pour mon conseil.
To me, men hearkened, and waited, and kept silence for my counsel;
22 Après mes paroles, ils n'ont plus parlé. Mon discours est tombé sur eux.
After I had spoken, they spake not again, and, upon them, used my speech to drop;
23 Ils m'attendaient comme la pluie. Leurs bouches buvaient comme avec la pluie de printemps.
And they waited, as for rain, for me, and, their mouths, they opened wide for the spring-rain;
24 Je leur ai souri quand ils n'avaient pas confiance. Ils n'ont pas rejeté la lumière de mon visage.
I laughed at them—they lost confidence, and, the light of my countenance, they suffered not to fail;
25 J'ai choisi leur voie, et je me suis assis comme chef. J'ai vécu comme un roi dans l'armée, comme celui qui réconforte les personnes en deuil.
I chose out their way, and sat chief, —and abode, as king, in an army, as one who, to mourners, giveth comfort.
