Job 28
1 « Il y a certainement une mine d'argent, et un endroit pour l'or qu'ils raffinent.
Truly there is a vein for silver, And a place for gold, which men refine.
2 Le fer est extrait de la terre, et le cuivre est fondu à partir du minerai.
Iron is obtained from earth, And stone is melted into copper.
3 L'homme met fin à l'obscurité, et cherche jusqu'à la frontière la plus lointaine, les pierres de l'obscurité et des ténèbres épaisses.
Man putteth an end to darkness; He searcheth to the lowest depths For the stone of darkness and the shadow of death.
4 Il ouvre un puits loin de l'endroit où vivent les gens. Ils sont oubliés par le pied. Ils sont suspendus loin des hommes, ils se balancent d'avant en arrière.
From the place where they dwell they open a shaft; Forgotten by the feet, They hang down, they swing away from men.
5 Quant à la terre, c'est d'elle que vient le pain. En dessous, il est comme retourné par le feu.
The earth, out of which cometh bread, Is torn up underneath, as it were by fire.
6 Saphirs proviennent de ses roches. Il a de la poussière d'or.
Her stones are the place of sapphires, And she hath clods of gold for man.
7 Ce chemin, aucun oiseau de proie ne le connaît, L'œil du faucon ne l'a pas vu non plus.
The path thereto no bird knoweth, And the vulture's eye hath not seen it;
8 Les bêtes fières ne l'ont pas foulée, et le lion féroce n'est pas passé par là.
The fierce wild beast hath not trodden it; The lion hath not passed over it.
9 Il pose sa main sur le rocher de silex, et il renverse les montagnes par les racines.
Man layeth his hand upon the rock; He upturneth mountains from their roots;
10 Il creuse des canaux parmi les rochers. Son œil voit chaque chose précieuse.
He cleaveth out streams in the rocks, And his eye seeth every precious thing;
11 Il lie les ruisseaux pour qu'ils ne coulent pas. La chose qui est cachée, il la met en lumière.
He bindeth up the streams, that they trickle not, And bringeth hidden things to light.
12 « Mais où trouvera-t-on la sagesse? Où se trouve le lieu de la compréhension?
But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?
13 L'homme ne connaît pas son prix, et on ne le trouve pas sur la terre des vivants.
Man knoweth not the price thereof, Nor can it be found in the land of the living.
14 L'abîme dit: « Ce n'est pas en moi ». La mer dit: « Elle n'est pas avec moi ».
The deep saith, It is not in me; And the sea saith, It is not with me.
15 On ne peut pas l'obtenir pour de l'or, l'argent ne sera pas non plus pesé pour son prix.
It cannot be gotten for gold, Nor shall silver be weighed out as the price thereof.
16 Il ne peut être évalué avec l'or d'Ophir, avec le précieux onyx, ou le saphir.
It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir, With the precious onyx or the sapphire.
17 L'or et le verre ne peuvent pas l'égaler, Elle ne sera pas non plus échangée contre des bijoux en or fin.
Gold and crystal are not to be compared with it; Nor can it be purchased with jewels of fine gold.
18 Il ne sera fait mention ni du corail ni du cristal. Oui, le prix de la sagesse est supérieur à celui des rubis.
No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; For wisdom is more precious than pearls.
19 La topaze d'Éthiopie ne l'égalera pas. Il ne sera pas évalué avec de l'or pur.
The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it, Nor can it be purchased with pure gold.
20 D'où vient donc la sagesse? Où se trouve le lieu de la compréhension?
Whence then cometh wisdom? And where is the place of understanding?
21 Elle est cachée aux yeux de tous les vivants, et gardé à l'écart des oiseaux du ciel.
Since it is hidden from the eyes of all living, And kept close from the fowls of the air.
22 Destruction et Mort disent, « Nous en avons entendu la rumeur de nos oreilles.
Destruction and Death say, We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.
23 « Dieu comprend son chemin, et il connaît sa place.
God knoweth the way to it; He knoweth its dwelling-place.
24 Car il regarde jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre, et voit sous tout le ciel.
For he seeth to the ends of the earth, And surveyeth all things under the whole heaven.
25 Il établit la force du vent. Oui, il mesure les eaux par mesure.
When he gave the winds their weight, And meted out the waters by measure;
26 Quand il a fait un décret pour la pluie, et un chemin pour l'éclair du tonnerre,
When he prescribed a law to the rain, And a path to the thunder-flash, —
27 alors il l'a vu, et l'a déclaré. Il l'a établi, oui, et l'a recherché.
Then did he see it, and make it known; He established it, and searched it out.
28 Il dit à l'homme, Voici la crainte de l'Éternel, qui est la sagesse. S'éloigner du mal, c'est comprendre. »
But he said unto man, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, And to depart from evil is understanding.
