Job 22
1 Alors Éliphaz, le Thémanite, prit la parole,
Then responded Eliphaz the Temanite, and said: —
2 « Un homme peut-il être utile à Dieu? Certes, celui qui est sage est profitable à lui-même.
Unto GOD, can a man act as friend? Surely a discreet man befriendeth himself!
3 Est-ce un plaisir pour le Tout-Puissant que vous soyez justes? Ou est-ce que ça lui profite que vous rendiez vos voies parfaites?
Is it a pleasure to the Almighty, that thou shouldst be righteous? or any profit, that thou shouldst be blameless in thy ways?
4 Est-ce pour votre piété qu'il vous réprimande, qu'il entre avec vous dans le jugement?
Is it, for thy reverence, that he will accuse thee? will enter with thee into judgment?
5 Votre méchanceté n'est-elle pas grande? Il n'y a pas non plus de fin à vos iniquités.
Is not, thy wickedness, great? and, without end, [are not] thine iniquities?
6 Car tu as pris des gages de ton frère pour rien, et ont dépouillé les nus de leurs vêtements.
Surely then hast been wont to put thy brother in pledge, for nothing, and, the garments of the ill-clad, hast thou stripped off:
7 Vous n'avez pas donné d'eau à boire à ceux qui sont fatigués, et vous avez refusé du pain aux affamés.
No water—to the weary, hast thou given to drink, and, from the hungry, thou hast withheld bread:
8 Mais le puissant, lui, avait la terre. L'homme honorable, il y a vécu.
A man of might, to him, pertaineth the land, and, the favorite, dwelleth therein:
9 Tu as renvoyé les veuves à vide, et les bras de l'orphelin ont été brisés.
Widows, thou hast sent away empty, and, the arms of the fatherless, thou dost crush.
10 C'est pourquoi il y a des pièges autour de toi. Une peur soudaine vous trouble,
For this cause, round about thee, are snares, and a dread startleth thee suddenly;
11 ou l'obscurité, de sorte que vous ne pouvez pas voir, et des flots d'eaux te couvrent.
Or darkness—thou canst not see, and, a flood of waters, covereth thee.
12 « Dieu n'est-il pas dans les hauteurs du ciel? Voyez la hauteur des étoiles, comme elles sont hautes!
Is not, GOD, [in] the height of the heavens? Behold, then, the head of the stars, that they are high.
13 Vous dites: « Que sait Dieu? Peut-il juger à travers l'obscurité épaisse?
Wilt thou say then, What doth GOD know? Out through a thick cloud, can he judge?
14 Des nuages épais le couvrent, de sorte qu'il ne voit pas. Il marche sur la voûte du ciel.
Dark clouds, are a veil to him, and he cannot see, or, the vault of the heavens, doth he walk?
15 Garderez-vous l'ancienne manière, que les hommes méchants ont foulés,
The path of the ancient time, wilt thou mark, which the men of iniquity trod?
16 qui ont été enlevés avant leur heure, dont le fondement a été déversé comme un torrent,
Who were snatched away before the time, and, a stream, washed away their foundation?
17 qui ont dit à Dieu: « Eloigne-toi de nous ». et « Que peut faire le Tout-Puissant pour nous? ».
Who had been saying unto GOD, Depart from us! and—What can the Almighty do for himself?
18 Pourtant, il a rempli leurs maisons de bonnes choses, mais le conseil des méchants est loin de moi.
Yet, he, had filled their houses with good! The counsel of the lawless, then, is far from me:
19 Les justes le voient et se réjouissent. Les innocents les ridiculisent,
The righteous shall see and rejoice, and, the innocent, shall laugh them to scorn:
20 en disant: « Ceux qui se sont élevés contre nous ont été exterminés. Le feu a consumé leur reste.
If our assailants do not vanish, then, their abundance, a fire consumeth!
21 « Fais connaissance avec lui maintenant, et sois en paix. Par elle, le bien viendra à toi.
Shew thyself to be one with him—I pray thee—and prosper, thereby, shall there come on thee blessing.
22 Veuillez recevoir l'instruction de sa bouche, et déposez ses paroles dans votre cœur.
Accept, I beseech thee, from his mouth—instruction, —and lay up his sayings in thy heart.
23 Si vous revenez au Tout-Puissant, vous serez édifiés, si vous éloignez l'iniquité loin de vos tentes.
If thou return unto the Almighty and submit thyself, if thou far remove perversity from thy tent,
24 Dépose ton trésor dans la poussière, l'or d'Ophir parmi les pierres des ruisseaux.
Then lay up, in the dust, precious ore, and, among the stones of the torrent-beds, fine gold:
25 Le Tout-Puissant sera ton trésor, et de l'argent précieux pour vous.
So shall, the Almighty, become, thy precious ores, yea glittering silver unto thee!
26 Car alors tu te complairas dans le Tout-Puissant, et tu lèveras ton visage vers Dieu.
For, then, in the Almighty, shalt thou take exquisite delight, and shalt lift up—unto GOD—thy face;
27 Tu le prieras, et il t'écoutera. Tu paieras tes vœux.
Thou shalt make entreaty unto him, and he will hear thee, and, thy vows, shalt thou pay;
28 Tu décréteras aussi une chose, et elle sera établie pour toi. La lumière brillera sur vos chemins.
And thou shalt decree a purpose, and it shall be fulfilled unto thee, and, upon thy ways, shall have shone a light;
29 Lorsqu'ils s'abaisseront, tu diras: « Relève-toi ». Il sauvera l'humble personne.
When men cast themselves down, then thou shalt say: Up! And, him that is of downcast eyes, shall he save;
30 Ildélivrera même celui qui n'est pas innocent. Oui, il sera délivré par la propreté de vos mains. »
He shall deliver the innocent, and thou shalt escape by the pureness of thy hands.
