Job 21
1 Alors Job répondit,
Then responded Job, and said: —
2 « Écoutez attentivement mon discours. Que ceci soit votre consolation.
Hear ye patiently my words, and let this be your consolation:
3 Permettez-moi, et je parlerai aussi. Après que j'ai parlé, moquez-vous.
Suffer me, that, I, may speak, and, after I have spoken, thou canst mock!
4 Quant à moi, ma plainte est-elle adressée à un homme? Pourquoi ne devrais-je pas être impatient?
Did, I, unto man, make my complaint? Wherefore, then, should my spirit not be impatient?
5 Regardez-moi, et soyez étonnés. Posez votre main sur votre bouche.
Turn round to me, and be astonished, and lay hand on mouth!
6 Quand je me souviens, je suis troublé. L'horreur s'empare de ma chair.
When I call to mind, then am I dismayed, and there seizeth my flesh a shuddering: —
7 « Pourquoi les méchants vivent-ils, devenir vieux, oui, et devenir puissant?
Wherefore do, lawless men, live, advance in years, even wax mighty in power?
8 Leur enfant est établi avec eux à leurs yeux, leur progéniture devant leurs yeux.
Their seed, is established in their sight, along with them, yea their offspring, before their eyes;
9 Leurs maisons sont à l'abri de la peur, la verge de Dieu n'est pas non plus sur eux.
Their houses, are at peace, without dread, neither is, the rod of GOD, upon them;
10 Leurs taureaux se reproduisent sans faute. Leurs vaches vêlent, et ne font pas de fausses couches.
His bull, covereth, and causeth not aversion, His cow safely calveth, and casteth not her young;
11 Ils envoient leurs petits comme un troupeau. Leurs enfants dansent.
They send forth—like a flock—their young ones, and, their children, skip about for joy;
12 Ils chantent au tambourin et à la harpe, et se réjouir au son de la pipe.
They rejoice aloud as [with] timbrel and lyre, and make merry to the sound of the pipe;
13 Ils passent leurs jours dans la prospérité. En un instant, ils descendent au Shéol. (Sheol h7585)
They complete, in prosperity, their days, and, in a moment to hades, they sink down. (Sheol h7585)
14 Ils disent à Dieu: « Éloigne-toi de nous! car nous ne voulons pas connaître vos habitudes.
Yet they said unto GOD, Depart from us, and, In the knowledge of thy ways, find we no pleasure.
15 Qu'est-ce que le Tout-Puissant, pour que nous le servions? Quel profit devrions-nous avoir, si nous le prions? ».
What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? Or what shall we profit, that we should urge him?
16 Voici, leur prospérité n'est pas dans leur main. Le conseil des méchants est loin de moi.
Lo! not in their own hand, is their welfare, The counsel of lawless men, is far from me!
17 « Combien de fois la lampe des méchants s'éteint-elle? que leur calamité s'abat sur eux, que Dieu distribue des peines dans sa colère?
How oft, the lamp of the lawless, goeth out, and their calamity, cometh upon them, Sorrows, apportioneth he in his anger;
18 Combien de fois ne sont-ils pas comme du chaume devant le vent? comme de l'ivraie que la tempête emporte?
They become as straw before the wind, and as chaff, which the storm stealeth away.
19 Vous dites: « Dieu fait retomber son iniquité sur ses enfants ». Qu'il s'en rende compte à lui-même, afin qu'il le sache.
Shall, GOD, reserve, for his children, his sorrow? Let him recompense him so that he may know it;
20 Que ses propres yeux voient sa destruction. Qu'il boive la colère du Tout-Puissant.
His own eyes, shall see his misfortune, and, the wrath of the Almighty, shall he drink.
21 Car que se soucie-t-il de sa maison après lui, lorsque le nombre de ses mois sera interrompu?
For what shall be his pleasure in his house after him, when, the number of his months, is cut in twain?
22 « Si quelqu'un enseigne la connaissance à Dieu, puisqu'il juge ceux qui sont élevés?
Is it, to GOD, one can teach knowledge, seeing that, he, shall judge, them who are on high?
23 On meurt dans toute sa force, en étant tout à fait à l'aise et tranquille.
This, man dieth, in the very perfection of his prosperity, wholly tranquil and secure;
24 Ses seaux sont pleins de lait. La mœlle de ses os est humidifiée.
His veins, are filled with nourishment, and, the marrow of his bones, is fresh;
25 Un autre meurt dans l'amertume de l'âme, et n'a jamais le goût du bien.
Whereas, this other man, dieth, in bitterness of soul, and hath never tasted good fortune:
26 Ils se couchent tous deux dans la poussière. Le ver les recouvre.
Together, in the dust, they lie down, and, the worm, spreadeth a covering over them.
27 « Voici, je connais tes pensées, les plans avec lesquels vous me feriez du tort.
Lo! I know your plans, and the devices, wherewith ye would do me violence!
28 Car vous dites: « Où est la maison du prince? Où est la tente dans laquelle vivaient les méchants?
For ye say, Where is the house of the noble-minded? And where the dwelling-tent of the lawless?
29 N'avez-vous pas demandé aux hommes de bonne volonté? Vous ne connaissez pas leurs preuves,
Have ye not asked the passers-by in the way? And, their signs, can ye not recognise?
30 que l'homme mauvais est réservé pour le jour de la calamité, qu'ils sont conduits au jour de la colère?
That, to the day of calamity, is the wicked reserved, to the day of indignant visitation, are they led.
31 Qui déclarera sa voie à sa face? Qui lui rendra ce qu'il a fait?
Who can declare—to his face—his way? And, what, he, hath done, who shall recompense to him?
32 Pourtant, il sera porté au tombeau. Des hommes veilleront sur la tombe.
Yet, he, to the graves, is borne, and, over the tomb, one keepeth watch;
33 Les mottes de la vallée lui seront douces. Tous les hommes le suivront, comme il y en a eu d'innombrables avant lui.
Pleasant to him are the mounds of the torrent-bed, —and, after him, doth every man march, as, before him, there were without number.
34 Alorscomment pouvez-vous me réconforter avec des bêtises, parce que dans vos réponses il ne reste que le mensonge? »
How then should ye comfort me with vanity, since, as for your replies, there lurketh, [in them] treachery?
