Job 15
1 Alors Éliphaz, le Thémanite, prit la parole,
Then answered Eliphaz the Themanite, and said,
2 « Si un homme sage répond par une vaine connaissance, et se remplir du vent d'est?
Should a wise man utter windy knowledge, and fill his inward parts with the east wind?
3 Doit-il raisonner avec des propos non profitables, ou avec des discours avec lesquels il ne peut rien faire de bon?
Should he reason with a speech which availeth nothing? and with words in which there is no profit?
4 Oui, vous supprimez la peur, et entravent la dévotion devant Dieu.
Yea, thou truly makest void the fear [of God], and diminishest devotion before God.
5 Car ton iniquité enseigne ta bouche, et vous choisissez le langage des rusés.
For thy iniquity teacheth thy mouth, so that thou choosest the language of the crafty.
6 C'est ta propre bouche qui te condamne, et non moi. Oui, tes propres lèvres témoignent contre toi.
Thy own mouth must condemn thee, but not I: yea, thy own lips will testify against thee.
7 « Es-tu le premier homme qui soit né? Ou bien on vous a fait sortir avant les collines?
Wast thou born as the first man? or wast thou brought forth before the hills?
8 Avez-vous entendu le conseil secret de Dieu? Limitez-vous la sagesse à vous-même?
Hast thou listened to the secret counsel of God? and is wisdom therefore of little esteem with thee?
9 Que savez-vous que nous ne savons pas? Que comprenez-vous qui n'est pas en nous?
What knowest thou, that we do not know? what understandest thou, which is not with us?
10 Avec nous, il y a des hommes aux cheveux gris et des hommes très âgés, beaucoup plus vieux que ton père.
Both the grayheaded and the very aged are among us, — richer than thy father in days.
11 Les consolations de Dieu sont-elles trop petites pour vous, même la parole qui est douce envers vous?
Are the divine consolations too little for thee? and the word that was so mild with thee?
12 Pourquoi ton cœur t'emporte-t-il? Pourquoi vos yeux clignotent-ils?
Whither doth thy heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes gaze at?
13 que vous tournez votre esprit contre Dieu, et laisser de telles paroles sortir de votre bouche?
That thou shouldst turn against God thy spirit, and utter [such] words out of thy mouth?
14 Qu'est-ce que l'homme, pour qu'il soit pur? Qu'est-ce que celui qui est né d'une femme, pour qu'il soit juste?
What is man, that he should be pure? and that he who is born of woman should be declared righteous?
15 Voici, il ne fait pas confiance à ses saints. Oui, les cieux ne sont pas propres à ses yeux;
Behold, in his holy ones he putteth no trust; and the heavens are not pure in his eyes:
16 combien moins celui qui est abominable et corrompu, un homme qui boit l'iniquité comme de l'eau!
How much more then the abominable and corrupt, the man who drinketh like water wrong-doing?
17 « Je vais te montrer, écoute-moi; ce que j'ai vu, je vais le déclarer
I will instruct thee, hear me; and what I have seen will I relate;
18 (que les sages ont raconté par leurs pères, et ne l'ont pas caché;
Which wise men have ever told, and have not concealed, as they obtained it from their fathers;
19 à qui seul le pays a été donné, et aucun étranger ne passait parmi eux):
Unto whom alone the earth was given, and into whose midst no stranger ever entered.
20 Le méchant se tord de douleur tous ses jours, même le nombre d'années qui sont réservées à l'oppresseur.
All his days is the wicked plagued with pain, and the number of years which are laid by for the tyrant.
21 Un bruit de terreur est dans ses oreilles. Dans la prospérité, le destructeur viendra sur lui.
A sound of terrors is in his ears: during peace will the waster come over him.
22 Il ne croit pas qu'il reviendra des ténèbres. Il est attendu par l'épée.
He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is looked for by the sword.
23 Il erre à la recherche de pain, en disant: « Où est-il? ». Il sait que le jour des ténèbres est prêt à sa main.
He wandereth abroad for bread, [saying, ] Where is it? he knoweth that there is ready at his hand the day of darkness.
24 La détresse et l'angoisse l'effraient. Ils l'emportent sur lui, comme un roi prêt à la bataille.
Distress and anguish terrify him: they assail him with might, as a king prepared for the battle.
25 Parce qu'il a étendu sa main contre Dieu, et se comporte fièrement contre le Tout-Puissant,
Because he had stretched out against God his hand, and strengthened himself against the Almighty;
26 il court vers lui avec un cou raide, avec les boucliers épais de ses boucliers,
[And] he had run against him, with an [extended] neck, with the thick roundings of his bucklers;
27 parce qu'il s'est couvert le visage de sa graisse, et a accumulé de la graisse sur ses cuisses.
Because he had covered his face with his fat, and had made thick folds of fat on his flanks;
28 Il a habité des villes désertes, dans des maisons que personne n'habitait, qui étaient prêts à devenir des tas.
And he dwelt in abandoned cities, in houses which none inhabited, which were destined to be ruinous heaps.
29 Il ne sera pas riche, et sa fortune ne durera pas, et leurs biens ne s'étendront pas sur la terre.
[Yet] will he not remain rich, neither will his wealth endure, nor will he attain their perfection on earth.
30 Il ne sortira pas des ténèbres. La flamme desséchera ses branches. Il s'en ira par le souffle de la bouche de Dieu.
He will never depart out of darkness: the flame shall dry up his shoots, and he will depart by the breath of God's mouth.
31 Qu'il ne se fie pas au vide, en se trompant lui-même, car le vide sera sa récompense.
Let him that goeth astray not trust in vanity; for vanity will be what he obtaineth thereby.
32 Elle s'accomplira avant son temps. Sa branche ne sera pas verte.
Even before his time will it be overfull, and his branches will not be green.
33 Il secouera son raisin non mûr comme la vigne, et il rejettera sa fleur comme l'olivier.
He will shake off like the vine his unripe grapes, and cast off like the olive his blossoms.
34 Car la compagnie des impies sera stérile, et le feu consumera les tentes de la corruption.
For the assembly of hypocrites will remain desolate, and fire will consume the tents of bribery.
35 Ils conçoivent la malice et produisent l'iniquité. Leur cœur prépare la tromperie. »
They conceive trouble, and bring forth wrong-doing, and their body prepareth deceit.
