Jérémie 20

1 Or Paschhur, fils du sacrificateur Immer, qui était chef de la maison de l'Éternel, entendit Jérémie qui prophétisait ces choses.

Pashhur son of Immer the priest—he was a leading officer—heard Jeremiah prophesying these words before Yahweh's house.

2 Alors Pashhur frappa Jérémie, le prophète, et le mit dans les ceps qui se trouvaient à la porte supérieure de Benjamin, dans la maison de l'Éternel.

So Pashhur beat Jeremiah the prophet and then placed him in the stocks that were at the Upper Gate of Benjamin in Yahweh's house.

3 Le lendemain, Paschhur fit sortir Jérémie des ceps. Jérémie lui dit: « Yahvé n'a pas donné à ton nom le nom de Pashhur, mais celui de Magormissabib.

It happened on the next day that Pashhur brought Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, “Yahweh has not called your name Pashhur, but you are Magor Missabib.

4 Car Yahvé a dit: « Voici, je vais faire de toi une terreur pour toi-même et pour tous tes amis. Ils tomberont par l'épée de leurs ennemis, et tes yeux le verront. Je livrerai tout Juda entre les mains du roi de Babylone, qui les emmènera captifs à Babylone et les tuera par l'épée.

For Yahweh says this, 'Look, I will make you an object of horror, you and all of your loved ones, for they will fall by the sword of their enemies and your eyes will see it. I will give all of Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon. He will make them captives in Babylon or attack them with the sword.

5 Et je livrerai toutes les richesses de cette ville, tous ses biens et tous ses objets précieux, oui, je livrerai tous les trésors des rois de Juda entre les mains de leurs ennemis. Ils les feront prisonniers, les prendront et les emmèneront à Babylone.

I will give him all the wealth of this city and all of its riches, all of its precious items and all the treasures of the kings of Judah. I will place these things in the hand of your enemies, and they will seize them. They will take them and bring them to Babylon.

6 Toi, Pashhur, et tous ceux qui habitent dans ta maison, vous irez en captivité. Vous viendrez à Babylone, et là vous mourrez, et là vous serez enterrés, vous et tous vos amis, à qui vous avez prophétisé faussement.'"

But you, Pashhur, and all the inhabitants of your house will go into captivity. You will go to Babylon and die there. You and all of your loved ones to whom you prophesied deceitful things will be buried there.'”

7 Yahvé, tu m'as persuadé, et j'ai été persuadé. Tu es plus fort que moi, et tu l'as emporté. Je suis devenu la risée de toute la journée. Tout le monde se moque de moi.

“Yahweh, you deceived me, and I was deceived. You are stronger than I, and you overpowered me. I have become a laughingstock all day long; everyone mocks me.

8 Car aussi souvent que je parle, je crie; Je crie: « Violence et destruction! » parce que la parole de Yahvé est devenue un opprobre pour moi, et une dérision, toute la journée.

For whenever I have spoken, I have called out and proclaimed, 'Violence and destruction.' Then Yahweh's word has become for me reproach and mocking every day.

9 Si je dis cela, je ne ferai pas mention de lui, ou de parler encore en son nom, alors il y a dans mon cœur comme un feu brûlant enfermé dans mes os. Je suis fatigué de tout retenir. Je ne peux pas.

If I say, 'I will not think about Yahweh anymore. I will not speak any longer in his name.' Then it is like a fire in my heart, held within my bones. So I struggle to contain it but I cannot.

10 Car j'ai entendu la diffamation de beaucoup: « Terreur de tous les côtés! Dénoncez, et nous le dénoncerons! » disent tous mes amis familiers, ceux qui guettent ma chute. « Peut-être sera-t-il persuadé, et nous l'emporterons sur lui, et nous prendrons notre revanche sur lui. »

I have heard rumors of terror from many people all around. 'Report! We must report it!' Those who are close to me watch to see if I will fall. 'Perhaps he can be tricked. If so, we can overpower him and take our revenge on him.'

11 Mais Yahvé est avec moi comme un grand puissant. C'est pourquoi mes persécuteurs vont trébucher, et ils ne l'emporteront pas. Ils seront totalement déçus parce qu'ils n'ont pas fait preuve de sagesse, même avec un déshonneur éternel qui ne sera jamais oublié.

But Yahweh is with me like a powerful warrior, so the ones pursuing me will stagger. They will not defeat me. They will be greatly ashamed, because they will not succeed. They will have unending shame, it will never be forgotten.

12 Mais Yahvé des armées, qui éprouve les justes, qui voit le cœur et l'esprit, laissez-moi voir votre vengeance sur eux, car je vous ai révélé ma cause.

But Yahweh of hosts, you examine the righteous and see the mind and the heart. Let me see your vengeance on them for I have committed my cause to you.

13 Chantez à Yahvé! Louez Yahvé, car il a délivré l'âme du malheureux de la main des méchants.

Sing to Yahweh! Praise Yahweh! For he has rescued the lives of those who are oppressed from the hand of evildoers.

14 Maudit soit le jour où je suis né. Ne laissez pas le jour où ma mère m'a enfanté être béni.

Let the day when I was born be cursed. Do not let the day that my mother bore me be blessed.

15 Maudit soit l'homme qui a apporté des nouvelles à mon père, en disant, « Un garçon est né pour toi », ce qui le rend très heureux.

Let the man who informed my father be cursed, the one who said, 'A male child has been born to you,' causing great joy.

16 Que cet homme soit comme les villes que l'Éternel a détruites, et ne s'est pas repenti. Qu'il entende un cri le matin, et de crier à l'heure du midi,

Let that man be like the cities that Yahweh overthrew and he did not have compassion on them. Let him hear a cry for help in the dawn, a battle cry at noontime,

17 parce qu'il ne m'a pas tué depuis le ventre de ma mère. Donc ma mère aurait été ma tombe, et ses entrailles toujours grandes.

because he did not kill me in the womb, making my mother to be my tomb, a womb that was pregnant forever.

18 Pourquoi suis-je sorti du ventre de ma mère pour voir le travail et la douleur? que mes jours soient consumés par la honte?

Why is it that I came out from the womb to see troubles and agony, so that my days are filled with shame?”
