Jérémie 2
1 La parole de Yahvé me fut adressée, en ces termes:
Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
2 « Va, et proclame aux oreilles de Jérusalem: « Yahvé dit », « Je me souviens pour vous de la gentillesse de votre jeunesse, votre amour en tant que mariée, comment tu m'as poursuivi dans le désert, dans une terre qui n'a pas été ensemencée.
Go, and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thy espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land [that was] not sown.
3 Israël était la sainteté pour Yahvé, les prémices de son accroissement. Tous ceux qui le dévorent seront tenus pour coupables. Le malheur viendra sur eux, dit Yahvé. »
Israel [was] holiness to the LORD, [and] the first-fruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.
4 Écoutez la parole de Yahvé, maison de Jacob, et toutes les familles de la maison d'Israël!
Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:
5 Yahvé dit, « Quelle iniquité vos pères ont-ils trouvée en moi, qu'ils se sont éloignés de moi, et ont marché après une vanité sans valeur, et sont devenus sans valeur?
Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they have gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and have become vain?
6 Ils n'ont pas dit: « Où est l'Éternel qui nous a fait monter du pays d'Égypte? qui nous a conduit dans le désert, à travers un pays de déserts et de fosses, à travers un pays de sécheresse et d'ombre de la mort, à travers une terre que personne n'a traversée, et où aucun homme ne vivait?
Neither said they, Where [is] the LORD that brought us out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drouth, and of the shades of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?
7 Je vous ai fait entrer dans un pays abondant. pour manger ses fruits et ses bienfaits; mais quand vous êtes entrés, vous avez souillé mon pays, et ont fait de mon héritage une abomination.
And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit of it, and the goodness of it; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination.
8 Les prêtres ne disaient pas: « Où est Yahvé? et ceux qui s'occupent de la loi ne me connaissaient pas. Les dirigeants ont aussi transgressé mes règles, et les prophètes ont prophétisé par Baal et suivi des choses qui ne profitent pas.
The priests said not, Where [is] the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after [things that] do not profit.
9 « C'est pourquoi je contesterai encore avec vous, dit Yahvé, « et je me disputerai avec les enfants de vos enfants ».
Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children's children will I plead.
10 Car passez dans les îles de Kittim, et regardez. Envoie à Kedar, et réfléchis bien, et voir s'il y a eu une telle chose.
For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send to Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there is such a thing.
11 Une nation a changé ses dieux, qui ne sont pas vraiment des dieux? Mais mon peuple a changé sa gloire pour ce qui ne profite pas.
Hath a nation changed [their] gods, which [are] yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for [that which] doth not profit.
12 « Cieux, soyez étonnés de ce qui suit et avoir horriblement peur. Soyez très désolés », dit Yahvé.
Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD.
13 « Car mon peuple a commis deux maux: ils m'ont abandonné, moi, la source d'eau vive, et se sont taillés des citernes: des citernes cassées qui ne peuvent pas contenir d'eau.
For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, [and] hewed out for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
14 Israël est-il un esclave? Est-il né dans l'esclavage? Pourquoi est-il devenu un captif?
[Is] Israel a servant? [is] he a home-born [slave]? why is he laid waste?
15 Les jeunes lions ont rugi contre lui et ont élevé leur voix. Ils ont fait de ses terres des déchets. Ses villes sont brûlées, sans habitant.
The young lions roared upon him, [and] yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.
16 Les enfants de Memphis et de Tachpanès ont brisé la couronne de ta tête.
Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head.
17 « N'est-ce pas vous qui l'avez provoqué? en ce que tu as abandonné Yahvé ton Dieu, quand il te conduisait par le chemin?
Hast thou not procured this to thyself in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way?
18 Maintenant, que gagnez-vous à aller en Égypte, pour boire les eaux du Shihor? Ou bien, pourquoi voulez-vous aller jusqu'en Assyrie, pour boire les eaux du fleuve?
And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river?
19 « Ta propre méchanceté te corrigera, et votre retour en arrière vous réprimandera. Sachez donc et voyez que c'est une chose mauvaise et amère, que tu as abandonné Yahvé ton Dieu, et que ma crainte ne soit pas en vous, dit le Seigneur, Yahvé des Armées.
Thy own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that [it is] an evil [thing] and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear [is] not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.
20 « Car il y a longtemps que j'ai brisé ton joug, et briser vos liens. Tu as dit: « Je ne servirai pas ». car sur chaque haute colline et sous chaque arbre vert, tu t'es incliné, jouant la prostituée.
For of old time I have broken thy yoke, [and] burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot.
21 Pourtant, je t'avais planté une vigne noble, une semence pure et fidèle. Comment donc êtes-vous devenus pour moi les branches dégénérées d'une vigne étrangère?
Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine to me?
22 Car si tu te laves avec de la lessive, et utiliser beaucoup de savon, mais ton iniquité est marquée devant moi », dit le Seigneur Yahvé.
For though thou shalt wash thee with niter, and take thee much soap, [yet] thy iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.
23 « Comment pouvez-vous dire: « Je ne suis pas souillé »? Je ne me suis pas attaqué aux Baals? Voyez votre chemin dans la vallée. Sachez ce que vous avez fait. Tu es un dromadaire rapide qui parcourt ses chemins,
How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: [thou art] a swift dromedary traversing her ways;
24 un âne sauvage habitué au désert, qui renifle le vent dans sa soif. Quand elle est en chaleur, qui peut la repousser? Tous ceux qui la cherchent ne se lasseront pas. Dans son mois, ils la trouveront.
A wild ass used to the wilderness, [that] snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.
25 « Empêchez vos pieds d'être nus, et votre gorge de la soif. Mais tu as dit: « C'est en vain ». Non, car j'ai aimé des étrangers, et je les suivrai.
Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.
26 Comme le voleur a honte quand on le trouve, et la maison d'Israël a honte... eux, leurs rois, leurs princes, leurs prêtres et leurs prophètes,
As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed: they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,
27 qui disent au bois: « Tu es mon père ». et une pierre: « Tu m'as donné naissance ». car ils m'ont tourné le dos, et non leur visage, mais au moment de leur détresse, ils diront: « Lève-toi et sauve-nous! ».
Saying to a stock, Thou [art] my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned [their] back to me, and not [their] face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.
28 « Mais où sont vos dieux que vous vous êtes faits? Laissez-les se lever, s'ils peuvent vous sauver au moment où vous êtes dans le pétrin, car tu as autant de dieux que tu as de villes, ô Juda.
But where [are] thy gods that thou hast made for thyself? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for [according to] the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.
29 « Pourquoi voulez-vous me disputer? Vous avez tous péché contre moi, dit Yahvé.
Why will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD.
30 « C'est en vain que j'ai frappé tes enfants. Ils n'ont reçu aucune correction. Votre propre épée a dévoré vos prophètes, comme un lion destructeur.
In vain have I smitten your children; they have received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.
31 Génération, considère la parole de Yahvé. Ai-je été un désert pour Israël? Ou une terre de ténèbres épaisses? Pourquoi mon peuple dit-il: « Nous nous sommes détachés »? Nous ne viendrons plus chez toi »?
O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness to Israel? a land of darkness? why say my people, We are lords; we will come no more to thee?
32 « Une vierge peut-elle oublier ses ornements, ou une mariée sa tenue? Mais mon peuple m'a oublié pendant des jours sans nombre.
Can a maid forget her ornaments, [or] a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.
33 Comme tu prépares bien ton chemin pour chercher l'amour! C'est pourquoi tu as même enseigné tes voies aux méchantes femmes.
Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways.
34 Le sang des âmes des pauvres innocents se trouve aussi dans tes jupes. Vous ne les avez pas trouvés en train d'entrer par effraction, mais c'est à cause de toutes ces choses.
Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.
35 Tu as pourtant dit: « Je suis innocent. Sa colère s'est détournée de moi. « Voici, je vais vous juger, parce que tu dis: « Je n'ai pas péché ».
Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger will turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.
36 Pourquoi faites-vous tant d'efforts pour changer vos habitudes? Tu auras aussi honte de l'Égypte, comme vous avez eu honte de l'Assyrie.
Why dost thou go about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.
37 Vous quitterez aussi ce lieu avec les mains sur la tête; car Yahvé a rejeté ceux en qui vous vous êtes confiés, et vous ne prospérerez pas avec eux.
Yes, thou shalt go forth from him, and thy hands upon thy head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.
