Jérémie 18
1 La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie par Yahvé, en ces termes:
The word which came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying:
2 « Lève-toi, descends à la maison du potier, et là je te ferai entendre mes paroles. »
Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there will I cause thee to hear my words.
3 Et je descendis à la maison du potier, et voici, il faisait quelque chose sur les roues.
So I went down to the potter's house, and behold, he was at work at the wheel.
4 Lorsque le vase qu'il avait fait d'argile était abîmé dans la main du potier, il en faisait un autre, comme il lui semblait bon de le faire.
And the vessel which he was making of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he began anew and made it another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.
5 Alors la parole de Yahvé me fut adressée, en ces termes:
Then came the word of Jehovah to me, saying:
6 « Maison d'Israël, ne puis-je pas faire de vous comme ce potier? dit Yahvé. « Voici, comme l'argile dans la main du potier, ainsi êtes-vous dans ma main, maison d'Israël.
Cannot I do after the manner of this potter With respect to you. O house of Israel, saith Jehovah? Behold, as the clay is in the hand of the potter, So are ye in my hand, O house of Israel!
7 Au moment où je parlerai d'une nation et d'un royaume, pour les arracher, les briser et les détruire,
Whenever I speak concerning a nation or a kingdom, That I will pluck it up, cast it down, or destroy it,
8 si cette nation, dont j'ai parlé, revient de son mal, je me repentirai du mal que j'ai voulu lui faire.
If that nation shall turn from its wickedness On account of which I threatened it, Then will I repent of the evil which I purposed to do to it.
9 Au moment où je parle au sujet d'une nation, et au sujet d'un royaume, de le bâtir et de le planter,
And whenever I speak concerning a nation or a kingdom, That I will build it, or plant it,
10 s'ils font ce qui est mal à mes yeux, s'ils n'obéissent pas à ma voix, alors je me repentirai du bien dont j'ai dit que je leur ferais bénéficier.
And it shall do that which is evil in my sight, And not hearken to my voice, Then will I repent of the good with which I promised to bless them.
11 « Maintenant, parlez aux hommes de Juda et aux habitants de Jérusalem, et dites: « L'Éternel dit: « Voici que je prépare le mal contre vous et que je forme un plan contre vous. Que chacun revienne maintenant de sa mauvaise voie, et qu'il corrige ses voies et ses actions ».
And now speak to the men of Judah, And to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I am framing evil against you, And meditating a design against you; Return ye now every one from his evil way, And amend your ways and your doings.
12 Mais ils dirent: « C'est en vain, car nous marcherons selon nos propres projets, et chacun suivra l'obstination de son mauvais cœur. »"
But they say, “There is no remedy, For we will walk after our own devices, And we will practise every one the perverseness of his evil heart.”
13 C'est pourquoi Yahvé dit: « Demandez maintenant parmi les nations, « Qui a entendu de telles choses? La vierge d'Israël a fait une chose très horrible.
Therefore thus saith Jehovah: Inquire ye now among the nations, Who hath heard such things as these? The virgin of Israel hath done a deed of horror.
14 La neige du Liban se détache-t-elle du rocher des champs? Les eaux froides qui descendent de loin seront-elles taries?
Shall the snow from the rocks of Lebanon forsake my fields? Or shall the cold flowing waters, that come from afar, be dried up?
15 Car mon peuple m'a oublié. Ils ont brûlé de l'encens à de faux dieux. Ils ont été amenés à trébucher sur leurs chemins. dans les chemins anciens, de marcher dans les chemins de traverse, d'une manière non construite,
Yet my people have forgotten me, And burned incense to vanity; They stumble in their paths, the old ways, And walk in ways that have not been thrown up,
16 pour faire de leur pays un objet d'étonnement, et un sifflement perpétuel. Tous ceux qui passeront devant seront étonnés, et secoue sa tête.
To make their land a desolation, A perpetual hissing; Every one that passeth through it shall be amazed, And shake his head.
17 Je les disperserai comme par un vent d'est devant l'ennemi. Je leur montrerai le dos, et pas le visage, au jour de leur calamité.
I will scatter them before the enemy, as with the east wind; I will show them the back, and not the face, In the day of their calamity.
18 Alors ils dirent: « Venez! Concevons des plans contre Jérémie; car la loi ne périra pas du prêtre, ni le conseil du sage, ni la parole du prophète. Venez, et frappons-le de la langue, et ne prêtons attention à aucune de ses paroles. »
But they say, “Come, let us devise measures against Jeremiah; For the law shall not perish from the priest, Nor counsel from the wise, Nor the word from the prophet; Come, let us smite him with the tongue, And not give heed to any of his words.”
19 Prends garde à moi, Yahvé, et écoute la voix de ceux qui me contestent.
Give heed to me, O Jehovah, And hear the voice of my adversaries!
20 Le mal doit-il être récompensé par le bien? Car ils ont creusé une fosse pour mon âme. Rappelez-vous comment je me suis tenu devant vous pour dire du bien d'eux, pour détourner d'eux ta colère.
Shall evil be returned for good? For they have digged a pit for me. Remember how I have stood before thee, To announce good to them, And to turn away thy wrath from them!
21 Livrez donc leurs enfants à la famine, et les livrer au pouvoir de l'épée. Que leurs femmes deviennent sans enfants et veuves. Laissez leurs hommes se faire tuer et leurs jeunes hommes frappés par l'épée au combat.
Therefore give thou up their sons to famine, And deliver them to the edge of the sword! Let their wives be childless and widows, Let their men be slain by pestilence, And their young men fall by the sword in battle!
22 Qu'un cri soit entendu de leurs maisons quand vous amenez une troupe soudainement sur eux; car ils ont creusé une fosse pour me prendre et des pièges cachés pour mes pieds.
Let a cry be heard from their houses, When thou shalt bring a troop upon them suddenly! For they have digged a pit to take me, And hidden snares for my feet.
23 Pourtant, Yahvé, tu connais tous leurs projets contre moi pour me tuer. Ne pardonnez pas leur iniquité. N'effacez pas leur péché de votre vue, Qu'ils soient renversés devant vous. Occupez-vous d'eux au moment de votre colère.
Thou, O Jehovah, knowest all their plots against my life! Cover not their iniquity, And blot not out their sin from thy sight! But let them be overthrown before thee; Deal with them in the time of thy wrath!
