Jérémie 10
1 Écoutez la parole que l'Éternel vous adresse, maison d'Israël!
Give ear to the word which the Lord says to you, O people of Israel:
2 Yahvé dit, « N'apprenez pas la voie des nations, et ne soyez pas consternés par les signes du ciel; car les nations sont consternées par eux.
This is what the Lord has said: Do not go in the way of the nations; have no fear of the signs of heaven, for the nations go in fear of them.
3 Car les coutumes des peuples ne sont que vanité; car on coupe un arbre de la forêt, le travail des mains de l'ouvrier à la hache.
For that which is feared by the people is foolish: it is the work of the hands of the workman; for a tree is cut down by him out of the woods with his axe.
4 Ils le décorent d'argent et d'or. Ils le fixent avec des clous et avec des marteaux, pour qu'il ne puisse pas bouger.
They make it beautiful with silver and gold; they make it strong with nails and hammers, so that it may not be moved.
5 Ils sont comme un palmier, dont le travail est tourné, et ne parle pas. Ils doivent être portés, parce qu'ils ne peuvent pas bouger. N'ayez pas peur d'eux; car ils ne peuvent pas faire le mal, il n'est pas en eux de faire le bien. »
It is like a pillar in a garden of plants, and has no voice: it has to be lifted, for it has no power of walking. Have no fear of it; for it has no power of doing evil and it is not able to do any good.
6 Il n'y a personne comme toi, Yahvé. Tu es génial, et ton nom est grand en puissance.
There is no one like you, O Lord; you are great and your name is great in power.
7 qui ne devraient pas vous craindre, Roi des nations? Car il vous appartient. Parce que parmi tous les sages des nations, et dans tout leur domaine royal, il n'y a personne comme toi.
Who would not have fear of you, O King of the nations? for it is your right: for among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you.
8 Mais ils sont tous ensemble brutaux et stupides, instruits par les idoles! C'est juste du bois.
But they are together like beasts and foolish: the teaching of false gods is wood.
9 Il y a de l'argent battu en plaques, qu'on apporte de Tarsis, et l'or d'Uphaz, le travail du graveur et des mains de l'orfèvre. Leurs vêtements sont bleus et violets. Ils sont tous l'œuvre d'hommes habiles.
Silver hammered into plates is sent from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the expert workman and of the hands of the gold-worker; blue and purple is their clothing, all the work of expert men.
10 Mais Yahvé est le vrai Dieu. Il est le Dieu vivant, et un Roi éternel. A sa colère, la terre tremble. Les nations ne sont pas capables de résister à son indignation.
But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God and an eternal king: when he is angry, the earth is shaking with fear, and the nations give way before his wrath.
11 « Tu leur diras ceci: « Les dieux qui n'ont pas fait les cieux et la terre disparaîtront de la terre et de sous les cieux. »
This is what you are to say to them: The gods who have not made the heavens and the earth will be cut off from the earth and from under the heavens.
12 Dieu a fait la terre par sa puissance. Il a établi le monde par sa sagesse, et c'est par son intelligence qu'il a déployé les cieux.
He has made the earth by his power, he has made the world strong in its place by his wisdom, and by his wise design the heavens have been stretched out.
13 Quand il fait entendre sa voix, les eaux dans les cieux rugissent, et il fait monter les vapeurs des extrémités de la terre. Il fait des éclairs pour la pluie, et fait sortir le vent de ses trésors.
At the sound of his voice there is a massing of waters in the heavens, and he makes the mists go up from the ends of the earth; he makes the thunder-flames for the rain, and sends out the wind from his store-houses.
14 Tout homme est devenu brutal et sans connaissance. Tout orfèvre est déçu par son image gravée; car son image en fusion n'est que mensonge, et il n'y a pas de souffle en eux.
Then every man becomes like a beast without knowledge; every gold-worker is put to shame by the image he has made: for his metal image is deceit, and there is no breath in them.
15 Ils sont une vanité, une œuvre d'égarement. Au moment de leur visite, ils périront.
They are nothing, a work of error: in the time of their punishment, destruction will overtake them.
16 La part de Jacob n'est pas comme celles-ci; car il est le créateur de toutes choses; et Israël est la tribu de son héritage. Yahvé des Armées est son nom.
The heritage of Jacob is not like these; for the maker of all things is his heritage: the Lord of armies is his name.
17 Rassemblez vos marchandises dans le pays, vous qui vivez en état de siège.
Get your goods together and go out of the land, O you who are shut up in the walled town.
18 Car Yahvé dit, « Voici qu'en ce moment, je vais frapper les habitants du pays, et les affligera, afin qu'ils le ressentent. »
For the Lord has said, I will send the people in flight like a stone from the land at this time, troubling them so that they will be conscious of it.
19 Malheur à moi, à cause de ma blessure! Ma blessure est grave; mais j'ai dit, « En vérité, c'est mon chagrin, et je dois le supporter. »
Sorrow is mine for I am wounded! my wound may not be made well; and I said, Cruel is my disease, I may not be free from it.
20 Ma tente a été détruite, et tous mes liens sont rompus. Mes enfants se sont éloignés de moi, et ils ne sont plus. Il n'y a plus personne pour étendre ma tente, pour installer mes rideaux.
My tent is pulled down and all my cords are broken: my children have gone from me, and they are not: no longer is there anyone to give help in stretching out my tent and hanging up my curtains.
21 Car les bergers sont devenus brutaux, et n'ont pas demandé l'avis de Yahvé. C'est pourquoi ils n'ont pas prospéré, et tous leurs troupeaux se sont dispersés.
For the keepers of the sheep have become like beasts, not looking to the Lord for directions: so they have not done wisely and all their flocks have been put to flight.
22 La voix de la nouvelle, la voici, elle vient, et une grande agitation venant du pays du nord, pour faire des villes de Juda une désolation, un lieu de résidence pour les chacals.
News is going about, see, it is coming, a great shaking is coming from the north country, so that the towns of Judah may be made waste and become the living-place of jackals.
23 Yahvé, je sais que la voie de l'homme n'est pas en lui-même. Il n'appartient pas à l'homme qui marche de diriger ses pas.
O Lord, I am conscious that a man's way is not in himself: man has no power of guiding his steps.
24 Yahvé, corrige-moi, mais doucement; pas dans votre colère, de peur que tu ne me réduises à néant.
O Lord, put me right, but with wise purpose; not in your wrath, or you will make me small.
25 Répands ta colère sur les nations qui ne te connaissent pas, et sur les familles qui n'invoquent pas ton nom; car ils ont dévoré Jacob. Oui, ils l'ont dévoré, consumé, et ont détruit sa maison.
Let your wrath be let loose on the nations which have no knowledge of you, and on the families who give no worship to your name: for they have made a meal of Jacob, truly they have made a meal of him and put an end to him and made his fields a waste.
