Hébreux 12
1 C'est pourquoi, nous qui sommes entourés d'une si grande nuée de témoins, rejetons tout fardeau et le péché qui nous enveloppe si facilement, et courons avec persévérance dans la course qui nous est proposée,
Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 en regardant à Jésus, le père et le consommateur de la foi, qui, pour la joie qui lui était réservée, a enduré la croix, en méprisant sa honte, et s'est assis à la droite du trône de Dieu.
looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of [our] faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and hath sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 Considérez en effet celui qui a supporté une telle contradiction des pécheurs contre lui-même, afin que vous ne vous lassiez pas, en défaillant dans vos âmes.
For consider him that hath endured such gainsaying of sinners against themselves, that ye wax not weary, fainting in your souls.
4 Vous n'avez pas encore résisté jusqu'au sang, en luttant contre le péché.
Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin:
5 Vous avez oublié l'exhortation qui raisonne avec vous comme avec des enfants, « Mon fils, ne prends pas à la légère le châtiment du Seigneur, et ne vous laissez pas abattre quand il vous réprimande;
and ye have forgotten the exhortation, which reasoneth with you as with sons, My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord, Nor faint when thou art reproved of him;
6 car celui que le Seigneur aime, il le discipline, et châtie chaque fils qu'il reçoit. »
For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, And scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
7 C'est pour la discipline que vous endurez. Dieu vous traite comme des enfants; car quel est le fils que son père ne corrige pas?
It is for chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom [his] father chasteneth not?
8 Mais si vous êtes privés de la discipline, à laquelle tous ont eu part, vous êtes illégitimes, et non des enfants.
But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
9 D'ailleurs, les pères de notre chair nous ont châtiés, et nous les avons respectés. Ne devrions-nous pas plutôt être soumis au Père des esprits et vivre?
Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
10 Ils nous ont en effet châtiés pendant quelques jours, comme il leur a semblé bon, mais lui, c'est pour notre bien, afin que nous participions à sa sainteté.
For they verily for a few days chastened [us] as seemed good to them; but he for [our] profit, that [we] may be partakers of his holiness.
11 Tout châtiment semble pour l'instant non pas joyeux, mais douloureux; mais il produit ensuite le fruit paisible de la justice pour ceux qu'il a formés.
All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous, but grievous: yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, [even the fruit] of righteousness.
12 C'est pourquoi relevez les mains qui pendent et les genoux affaiblis,
Wherefore lift up the hands that hang down, and the palsied knees;
13 et tracez des sentiers droits pour vos pieds, afin que ce qui est boiteux ne soit pas disloqué, mais plutôt guéri.
and make straight paths for your feet, that that which is lame be not turned out of the way, but rather be healed.
14 Recherchez la paix avec tous les hommes et la sanctification sans laquelle personne ne verra le Seigneur,
Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord:
15 en veillant à ce qu'il n'y ait pas d'homme qui manque à la grâce de Dieu, à ce qu'aucune racine d'amertume ne germe chez vous et ne souille plusieurs personnes,
looking carefully lest [there be] any man that falleth short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble [you], and thereby the many be defiled;
16 à ce qu'il n'y ait pas d'impudique ou de profane, comme Ésaü, qui a vendu son droit d'aînesse pour un repas.
lest [there be] any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one mess of meat sold his own birthright.
17 Vous savez en effet que, lorsqu'il voulut ensuite hériter de la bénédiction, il fut rejeté, parce qu'il ne trouva pas de lieu où il pût se raviser, bien qu'il le cherchât avec larmes.
For ye know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected (for he found no place of repentance), though he sought it diligently with tears.
18 Car vous n'êtes pas arrivés à une montagne que l'on pouvait toucher et qui brûlait de feu, ni à l'obscurité, ni aux ténèbres, ni à la tempête,
For ye are not come unto [a mount] that might be touched, and that burned with fire, and unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
19 ni au son d'une trompette, ni à la voix des paroles, que ceux qui l'entendaient suppliaient qu'on ne leur adressât pas un mot de plus,
and the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which [voice] they that heard entreated that no word more should be spoken unto them:
20 car ils ne pouvaient supporter ce qui avait été ordonné: « Si un seul animal touche la montagne, il sera lapidé ».
for they could not endure that which was enjoined, If even a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned;
21 L'apparition était si effrayante que Moïse dit: « Je suis terrifié et je tremble. »
and so fearful was the appearance, [that] Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:
22 Mais vous êtes venus à la montagne de Sion, à la cité du Dieu vivant, la Jérusalem céleste, à une multitude innombrable d'anges,
but ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable hosts of angels,
23 au rassemblement et à l'assemblée des premiers-nés inscrits dans les cieux, à Dieu, le juge de tous, aux esprits des justes rendus parfaits,
to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
24 à Jésus, le médiateur d'une nouvelle alliance, et au sang de l'aspersion qui vaut mieux que celui d'Abel.
and to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaketh better than [that of] Abel.
25 Veillez à ne pas refuser celui qui parle. Car s'ils n'ont pas échappé au refus de celui qui avertissait sur la terre, à combien plus forte raison n'échapperons-nous pas, nous qui nous détournons de celui qui avertit du haut des cieux,
See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not, when they refused him that warned [them] on earth, much more [shall not] we [escape], who turn away from him that [warneth] from heaven:
26 dont la voix a ébranlé la terre alors, mais qu'il a promis maintenant en disant: « Encore une fois, j'ébranlerai non seulement la terre, mais aussi les cieux. »
whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more will I make to tremble not the earth only, but also the heaven.
27 Cette expression « Encore une fois » signifie que ce qui est ébranlé est enlevé, comme les choses faites, afin que ce qui n'est pas ébranlé demeure.
And this [word], Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain.
28 C'est pourquoi, recevant un Royaume qui ne peut être ébranlé, ayons la grâce, par laquelle nous servons Dieu agréablement, avec respect et crainte,
Wherefore, receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us have grace, whereby we may offer service well-pleasing to God with reverence and awe:
29 car notre Dieu est un feu dévorant.
for our God is a consuming fire.
