Hébreux 11
1 Or la foi est l'assurance des choses qu'on espère, la preuve de celles qu'on ne voit pas.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
2 Car c'est par là que les anciens ont obtenu l'approbation.
For by it the elders obtained a good report.
3 Par la foi, nous comprenons que l'univers a été formé par la parole de Dieu, de sorte que ce que l'on voit n'a pas été fait à partir de choses visibles. (aiōn g165)
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which appeared. (aiōn g165)
4 Par la foi, Abel a offert à Dieu un sacrifice plus excellent que celui de Caïn, par lequel il a reçu le témoignage qu'il était juste, Dieu témoignant à l'égard de ses dons, et par lequel, bien que mort, il parle encore.
By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained testimony that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
5 C'est par la foi qu'Hénoc a été enlevé, afin qu'il ne voie pas la mort, et qu'il n'a pas été retrouvé, parce que Dieu l'a traduit. Car il lui a été rendu témoignage qu'avant sa translation il avait été bien agréable à Dieu.
By faith Enoch was translated, that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
6 Sans la foi, il est impossible de lui être agréable, car celui qui s'approche de Dieu doit croire qu'il existe et qu'il est le rémunérateur de ceux qui le cherchent.
But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
7 Par la foi, Noé, averti des choses qu'on ne voyait pas encore, et animé d'une crainte pieuse, a préparé un navire pour sauver sa maison, par lequel il a condamné le monde et est devenu héritier de la justice selon la foi.
By faith Noah, being warned by God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
8 C'est par la foi qu'Abraham, lorsqu'il fut appelé, obéit pour sortir vers le lieu qu'il devait recevoir en héritage. Il sortit, sans savoir où il allait.
By faith Abraham, when he was called to remove into a place which he should afterwards receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out not knowing whither he was going.
9 C'est par la foi qu'il vécut comme un étranger dans la terre promise, comme dans une terre qui ne lui appartenait pas, habitant sous des tentes avec Isaac et Jacob, héritiers avec lui de la même promesse.
By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as [in] a foreign country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
10 Car il attendait la cité qui a des fondements, et dont Dieu est le constructeur et l'artisan.
For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker [is] God.
11 C'est par la foi que Sara elle-même a reçu le pouvoir de concevoir, et qu'elle a enfanté un enfant à un âge avancé, car elle a considéré comme fidèle celui qui avait promis.
Through faith also Sarah herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
12 C'est pourquoi un seul homme a engendré autant d'enfants que les étoiles du ciel sont nombreuses, et aussi innombrables que le sable qui est au bord de la mer, et il est comme mort.
Therefore there sprang even from one, and him as good as dead, [so many] as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea-shore innumerable.
13 Tous ceux-là sont morts dans la foi, n'ayant pas reçu les promesses, mais les ayant vues et embrassées de loin, et ayant confessé qu'ils étaient étrangers et pèlerins sur la terre.
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of [them], and embraced [them], and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
14 Car ceux qui disent de telles choses montrent clairement qu'ils cherchent un pays à eux.
For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
15 Si en effet ils avaient pensé au pays d'où ils sont partis, ils auraient eu le temps de revenir.
And truly, if they had been mindful of that [country] from whence they came, they might have had opportunity to return.
16 Mais maintenant ils désirent un pays meilleur, c'est-à-dire un pays céleste. C'est pourquoi Dieu n'a pas honte d'eux, d'être appelé leur Dieu, car il leur a préparé une cité.
But now they desire a better [country], that is, a heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for he hath prepared for them a city.
17 Par la foi, Abraham, mis à l'épreuve, offrit Isaac. En effet, celui qui avait reçu avec joie les promesses offrait son fils unique,
By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only-begotten [son],
18 à qui il avait été dit: « Ta descendance sera comptée comme celle d'Isaac »,
Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
19 concluant que Dieu est capable de ressusciter même d'entre les morts. Au sens figuré, il l'a aussi ressuscité d'entre les morts.
Accounting that God [was] able to raise [him] even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
20 C'est par la foi qu'Isaac a béni Jacob et Ésaü, même en ce qui concerne les choses à venir.
By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
21 C'est par la foi que Jacob, à sa mort, bénit chacun des fils de Joseph et se prosterna, appuyé sur le sommet de son bâton.
By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshiped, [leaning] upon the top of his staff.
22 C'est par la foi que Joseph, lorsque sa fin approcha, fit mention du départ des enfants d'Israël, et donna des instructions concernant ses ossements.
By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.
23 C'est par la foi que Moïse, à sa naissance, fut caché pendant trois mois par ses parents, parce qu'ils virent qu'il était un bel enfant; et ils ne craignirent pas l'ordre du roi.
By faith Moses when he was born, was hid three months by his parents, because they saw [he was] a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.
24 C'est par la foi que Moïse, devenu grand, refusa d'être appelé fils de la fille de Pharaon,
By faith Moses, when he had come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;
25 préférant partager les mauvais traitements du peuple de Dieu plutôt que de jouir pour un temps des plaisirs du péché,
Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
26 considérant l'opprobre du Christ comme une plus grande richesse que les trésors de l'Égypte, car il en attendait la récompense.
Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt: for he had respect to the recompense of the reward.
27 C'est par la foi qu'il quitta l'Égypte, sans craindre la colère du roi, car il endurait, comme s'il voyait celui qui est invisible.
By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
28 C'est par la foi qu'il a gardé la Pâque et l'aspersion du sang, afin que le destructeur des premiers-nés ne les touche pas.
Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the first-born should touch them.
29 C'est par la foi qu'ils traversèrent la mer Rouge comme sur une terre sèche. Lorsque les Égyptiens ont essayé de le faire, ils ont été engloutis.
By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry [land]: which the Egyptians essaying to do were drowned.
30 C'est par la foi que les murs de Jéricho sont tombés après avoir été encerclés pendant sept jours.
By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encompassed seven days.
31 C'est par la foi que Rahab la prostituée n'a pas péri avec les désobéissants, ayant reçu les espions en paix.
By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, as she had received the spies with peace.
32 Que dirai-je encore? Car le temps me manquerait si je parlais de Gédéon, de Barak, de Samson, de Jephté, de David, de Samuel et des prophètes -
And what shall I say more? for the time would fail me to tell of Gideon, and [of] Barak, and [of] Samson, and [of] Jephthah, [of] David also, and Samuel, and [of] the prophets:
33 qui, par la foi, ont soumis des royaumes, exercé la justice, obtenu des promesses, fermé la gueule des lions,
Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
34 éteint la puissance du feu, échappé au tranchant de l'épée, se sont fortifiés à partir de leur faiblesse, sont devenus puissants à la guerre et ont mis en fuite les armées étrangères.
Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
35 Des femmes ont reçu leurs morts par résurrection. D'autres ont été torturés, n'acceptant pas leur délivrance, afin d'obtenir une meilleure résurrection.
Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:
36 D'autres ont été éprouvés par la moquerie et la flagellation, et même par les liens et la prison.
And others had trial of [cruel] mockings and scourgings, and, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:
37 Ils ont été lapidés. On les a sciés. Ils ont été tentés. Ils ont été tués par l'épée. Ils allaient et venaient, vêtus de peaux de brebis et de peaux de chèvres, dans la misère, l'affliction, les mauvais traitements,
They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheep-skins, and goat-skins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;
38 eux dont le monde n'était pas digne, errant dans les déserts, les montagnes, les cavernes et les trous de la terre.
(Of whom the world was not worthy: ) they wandered in deserts, and [in] mountains, and [in] dens and caves of the earth.
39 Tous ceux-là, après avoir été recommandés pour leur foi, n'ont pas reçu la promesse,
And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
40 Dieu ayant prévu quelque chose de meilleur à notre égard, afin que, sans nous, ils ne soient pas parfaits.
God having provided some better [thing] for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
