Genèse 16
1 Saraï, la femme d'Abram, ne lui donna pas d'enfants. Elle avait une servante, une Égyptienne, qui s'appelait Agar.
But Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children, —she had, however, an Egyptian handmaid, whose name was Hagar.
2 Saraï dit à Abram: « Voici, Yahvé m'a empêché d'enfanter. Va donc voir ma servante. Il se peut que j'obtienne d'elle des enfants. » Abram écouta la voix de Saraï.
So then Sarai said unto Abram Behold, I pray thee, Yahweh hath restrained me, from bearing, go in I pray thee unto, my handmaid, peradventure I may be built up from, her, And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
3 Saraï, la femme d'Abram, prit Agar l'Égyptienne, sa servante, après qu'Abram eut vécu dix ans au pays de Canaan, et la donna pour femme à son mari Abram.
So Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian. her handmaid, at the end of ten years of Abram’s dwelling in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband, to be to him as a wife.
4 Il alla vers Agar, et elle devint enceinte. Quand elle vit qu'elle avait conçu, sa maîtresse fut méprisée à ses yeux.
And he went in unto Hagar and she conceived, —and when she saw that she had conceived, lightly esteemed, was her lady, in her eyes.
5 Saraï dit à Abram: « Ce tort est de ta faute. J'ai mis ma servante dans ton sein, et quand elle a vu qu'elle avait conçu, elle m'a méprisée. Que Yahvé juge entre moi et toi. »
Then said Sarai unto Abram: My wrong, is, on thee! I, gave my handmaid into thy bosom, and when she seeth that she hath conceived, then am I lightly esteemed in her eyes Yahweh judge betwixt me and her.
6 Mais Abram dit à Saraï: « Voici ta servante qui est entre tes mains. Fais-lui tout ce qui est bon à tes yeux. » Saraï la traita durement, et elle s'enfuit devant elle.
And Abram said unto Sarai, Lo! thy handmaid, is in thy hand, do to her what is good in thine eyes. So Sarai humbled her, and she fled from her face.
7 L'ange de Yahvé la trouva près d'une fontaine d'eau dans le désert, près de la fontaine sur le chemin de Shur.
And the messenger of Yahweh found her by the fountain of water in the desert, —by the fountain in the way to Shur.
8 Il lui dit: « Agar, servante de Saraï, d'où viens-tu? Où vas-tu? » Elle a dit: « Je fuis le visage de ma maîtresse Saraï. »
So he said Hagar! handmaid of Sarai! Whence hast thou come, and whither wouldst thou go? And she said, From the face of Sarai, my lady, am, I, fleeing.
9 L'ange de Yahvé lui dit: « Retourne vers ta maîtresse, et soumets-toi à ses mains. »
And the messenger of Yahweh said to her, Return unto thy lady, —and humble thyself under her hands.
10 L'ange de Yahvé lui dit: « Je multiplierai beaucoup ta descendance, et elle ne sera pas comptée comme une multitude. »
And the messenger of Yahweh said to her, I will, greatly multiply, thy seed—so that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
11 L'ange de Yahvé lui dit: « Voici, tu es enceinte, et tu vas enfanter un fils. Tu lui donneras le nom d'Ismaël, car Yahvé a entendu ta souffrance.
And the messenger of Yahweh said to her, Behold thee! with child, and about bearing a son—and thou shalt call his name Ishmael ["God hearkeneth"] for Yahweh hath hearkened unto thy humiliation.
12 Il sera comme un âne sauvage parmi les hommes. Sa main sera contre tout homme, et la main de tout homme contre lui. Il vivra en opposition à tous ses frères. »
But, he, will be a wild ass of a man, his hand, against every one, and every one’s hand against him—yet, in presence of all his brethren, shall he have his habitation.
13 Elle appela le nom de Yahvé qui lui avait parlé: « Tu es un Dieu qui voit », car elle disait: « Suis-je restée en vie après l'avoir vu? »
And she called the name of Yahweh, who had spoken unto her, Thou GOD of vision! For she said. Do I even here, retain my vision after a vision?
14 C'est pourquoi on appela le puits Beer Lahai Roi. Voici, il est entre Kadès et Bered.
On this account, is the well called, the well of the life of vision, lo! it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15 Agar enfanta un fils à Abram. Abram donna à son fils, qu'Agar avait enfanté, le nom d'Ismaël.
So Hagar bare to Abram a son, —and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bare, Ishmael.
16 Abram était âgé de quatre-vingt-six ans quand Agar enfanta Ismaël à Abram.
Now, Abram, was eighty—six years old, —when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.
