Genèse 13
1 Abram monta hors d'Égypte - lui, sa femme, tout ce qu'il possédait, et Lot avec lui - dans le Sud.
So Abram and Sarai left Egypt, and they took along all his possessions, and Lot went with them to the Negev [Desert].
2 Abram était très riche en bétail, en argent et en or.
Abram was very rich. He owned a lot of livestock, silver and gold.
3 Il partit du Sud jusqu'à Béthel, à l'endroit où se trouvait sa tente au début, entre Béthel et Aï,
They continued traveling from place to place from the Negev [Desert] toward Bethel [town] to the place between Bethel and Ai where they had previously set up their tents,
4 à l'endroit de l'autel qu'il avait fait là au début. Là, Abram invoqua le nom de Yahvé.
and where Abram had made a stone altar and worshiped Yahweh.
5 Lot, qui était allé avec Abram, avait aussi des troupeaux et des tentes.
Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks of sheep and goats and herds of cattle, and tents.
6 Le pays ne pouvait pas les porter, pour qu'ils vivent ensemble; car leurs biens étaient si grands qu'ils ne pouvaient pas vivre ensemble.
But they had so many animals that they could not all stay in the same area. There was not enough land to provide water and food for all their animals.
7 Il y eut des querelles entre les bergers du bétail d'Abram et les bergers du bétail de Lot. Les Cananéens et les Phéréziens vivaient dans le pays en ce temps-là.
Furthermore, the descendants of Canaan and Perizzi were also living in that area, and the land really belonged to them. And the men who took care of Abram’s animals started quarreling with the men who took care of Lot’s animals.
8 Abram dit à Lot: « Je t'en prie, qu'il n'y ait pas de dispute entre toi et moi, entre tes bergers et mes bergers, car nous sommes parents.
So Abram said to Lot, “Since we are close relatives, it is not good for us two to quarrel, or for the men who take care of your animals to quarrel with the men who take care of my animals.
9 Le pays tout entier n'est-il pas devant toi? Je te prie de te séparer de moi. Si tu vas à gauche, je vais à droite. Ou si tu vas à droite, j'irai à gauche. »
There is plenty of land for both of us. So we should separate. You can choose whatever part you want [RHQ]. If you want the area over there, I will stay here. If you want the area here, I will go over there.”
10 Lot leva les yeux et vit toute la plaine du Jourdain, qui était partout bien arrosée, avant que Yahvé ne détruise Sodome et Gomorrhe, comme le jardin de Yahvé, comme le pays d'Égypte, en allant vers Zoar.
Lot looked around toward Zoar [town], and saw that there was plenty of water all over the plain near the Jordan [River]. It was like the park/garden in Eden, and like the land in Egypt. [That was before Yahweh destroyed [the cities of] Sodom and Gomorrah which were on that plain.]
11 Lot choisit donc pour lui la plaine du Jourdain. Lot voyagea vers l'est, et ils se séparèrent les uns des autres.
So Lot chose the land in the plain of the Jordan [River]. He left his uncle, Abram, and moved east.
12 Abram habita le pays de Canaan, et Lot habita les villes de la plaine, et il déplaça sa tente jusqu'à Sodome.
Abram stayed in the Canaan area, and Lot started to live near the cities in the plain of the Jordan [River], and he set up his tents near Sodom [city].
13 Or, les hommes de Sodome étaient extrêmement méchants et pécheurs contre Yahvé.
[You need to know that] people who lived there were extremely wicked.
14 Yahvé dit à Abram, après que Lot se fut séparé de lui: « Maintenant, lève les yeux et regarde du lieu où tu es, vers le nord et vers le sud, vers l'est et vers l'ouest,
After Abram and Lot separated, Yahweh said to Abram, “Look around at this whole area where you are. Look north and south, look east and west.
15 car je donnerai tout le pays que tu vois, à toi et à ta postérité, pour toujours.
I will give to you and your descendants all the land that you see; I will give it to you forever.
16 Je rendrai ta descendance comme la poussière de la terre, de sorte que si un homme peut compter la poussière de la terre, alors ta descendance pourra aussi être comptée.
I will cause your descendants to be as numerous as particles of dust! [It will be easier] to count the particles of dust than it will be to count your descendants [HYP].
17 Lève-toi, parcours le pays dans sa longueur et dans sa largeur, car je te le donnerai. »
Walk through the land in every direction, because I am going to give it all to you.”
18 Abram déplaça sa tente et vint s'établir près des chênes de Mamré, qui sont à Hébron, et il y bâtit un autel à Yahvé.
So Abram [and his men] took down their tents and moved to Hebron and started to live by the huge trees [at the town] Mamre. He placed a stone altar there to [make sacrifices to] Yahweh.
