1 Après ces choses, lorsque la colère du roi Assuérus fut apaisée, il se souvint de Vasthi, de ce qu'elle avait fait et de ce qui avait été décrété contre elle.
Therfor whanne these thingis weren doon, aftir that the indignacioun of kyng Assuerus was coold, he bithouyte of Vasthi, and what thingis sche hadde do, ethir what thingis sche suffride.
2 Alors les serviteurs du roi qui le servaient dirent: « Qu'on cherche pour le roi de belles jeunes vierges.
And the children and the mynystris of the kyng seiden to `the kyng, Damyselis, virgyns `and faire, be souyt to the kyng; and `men ben sent,
3 Que le roi nomme des officiers dans toutes les provinces de son royaume, afin qu'ils rassemblent toutes les belles jeunes filles vierges à la citadelle de Suse, à la maison des femmes, sous la garde d'Hégaï, eunuque du roi, gardien des femmes. Qu'on leur donne des cosmétiques;

4 et que la jeune fille qui plaira au roi soit reine à la place de Vasthi. » La chose plut au roi, et il fit ainsi.

5 Il y avait dans la citadelle de Suse un Juif du nom de Mardochée, fils de Jaïr, fils de Schimeï, fils de Kis, Benjamite,

7 Il éleva Hadassa, c'est-à-dire Esther, la fille de son oncle, car elle n'avait ni père ni mère. La jeune fille était belle et équitable; et quand son père et sa mère furent morts, Mardochée la prit pour sa propre fille.

8 Ainsi, lorsque l'ordre du roi et son décret furent entendus, et que de nombreuses jeunes filles furent rassemblées à la citadelle de Suse, sous la garde d'Hégaï, Esther fut emmenée dans la maison du roi, sous la garde d'Hégaï, gardien des femmes.
And whanne the comaundement of the kyng was ofte pupplischid, and bi his comaundement many faire virgyns weren brouyt to Susa, and weren bitakun to Egey, the onest seruaunt and chast, also Hester among othere damesels was bytakun to hym, that sche schulde be kept in the noumbre of wymmen.
9 La jeune fille lui plut et elle obtint de lui de la bienveillance. Il s'empressa de lui donner des cosmétiques et des portions de nourriture, ainsi que les sept jeunes filles de choix qui devaient lui être confiées hors de la maison du roi. Il les installa, elle et ses servantes, à la meilleure place dans la maison des femmes.
And sche pleside hym, and foond grace in his siyt, that he hastide the ournement of wymmen, and bitook to hir her partis, and seuene the faireste damesels of the kyngis hows; and he ournede and araiede bothe hir and damesels suynge hir feet.
10 Esther n'avait pas fait connaître son peuple ni sa parenté, car Mardochée lui avait donné l'ordre de ne pas le faire.

11 Mardochée se promenait tous les jours devant le parvis de la maison des femmes, pour savoir comment allait Esther et ce qu'elle allait devenir.

13 La jeune femme se présenta alors au roi de la manière suivante: on lui donna tout ce qu'elle désirait pour qu'elle passe avec elle de la maison des femmes à la maison du roi.
And thei entriden to the kyng, and what euer thing perteynynge to ournement thei axiden, thei token; and thei weren araied as it pleside hem, and passiden fro the chaumbre of wymmen to the kyngis bed.
14 Elle y alla le soir, et le lendemain elle retourna dans la seconde maison des femmes, sous la garde de Shaashgaz, l'eunuque du roi, qui gardait les concubines. Elle n'entrait plus chez le roi, à moins que le roi ne se réjouisse d'elle, et qu'elle ne soit appelée par son nom.

15 Or, lorsque le tour d'Esther, fille d'Abihail, oncle de Mardochée, qui l'avait prise pour sa fille, vint à entrer chez le roi, elle ne demanda rien d'autre que ce que lui conseilla Hégaï, l'eunuque du roi, gardien des femmes. Esther obtint la faveur de tous ceux qui la regardaient.

16 Esther fut conduite chez le roi Assuérus, dans sa maison royale, le dixième mois, qui est le mois de Tébeth, la septième année de son règne.
Therfor sche was lad to the bed of kyng Assuerus, in the tenthe monethe, which is clepid Cebeth, in the seuenthe yeer of his rewme.
17 Le roi aima Esther plus que toutes les femmes, et elle obtint à ses yeux plus de faveur et de bienveillance que toutes les vierges, de sorte qu'il mit la couronne royale sur sa tête et l'établit reine à la place de Vasthi.
And the kyng feruentli louyde hir more than alle wymmen, and sche hadde grace and mercy bifor hym ouer alle wymmen; and he settide the diademe of rewme `on hir heed, and he made hir to regne in the stide of Vasthi.
18 Alors le roi fit un grand festin pour tous ses princes et ses serviteurs, même le festin d'Esther, et il proclama une fête dans les provinces, et donna des cadeaux selon la générosité du roi.
And he comaundide a ful worschipful feeste to be maad redi to alle hise princes and seruauntis, for the ioynyng togidere and the weddyngis of Hester; and he yaf rest to alle prouynces, and yaf yiftis aftir the worschipful doyng of a prynce.
19 Lorsque les vierges furent réunies pour la seconde fois, Mardochée était assis à la porte du roi.
And whanne virgyns weren souyt also the secounde tyme, and weren gaderid togidere, Mardochee dwellide at the yate of the kyng.
20 Esther n'avait pas encore fait connaître sa parenté ni son peuple, comme Mardochée le lui avait ordonné; car Esther obéissait à Mardochée, comme elle l'avait fait lorsqu'elle avait été élevée par lui.
Hester hadde not yit schewid hir cuntrei and puple, bi comaundement of hym; for whi what euer thing he comaundide, Hester kepte, and sche dide so alle thingis, as sche was wont in that tyme, in which he nurschide hir a litil child.
21 En ces jours-là, comme Mardochée était assis à la porte du roi, deux eunuques du roi, Bigthan et Teresh, qui étaient portiers, se mirent en colère et cherchèrent à porter la main sur le roi Assuérus.
Therfor in that tyme, wherynne Mardochee dwellide at the `yate of the king, Bagathan and Thares, twei seruauntis of the kyng, weren wrothe, `that weren porteris, and saten in the first threisfold of the paleis; and thei wolden rise ayens the kyng, and sle hym.
22 Cette affaire fut connue de Mardochée, qui en informa la reine Esther, et Esther en informa le roi au nom de Mardochée.
Which thing was not hid fro Mardochee, and anoon he telde to the queen Hester, and sche to the kyng, bi the name of Mardochee, that hadde teld the thing to hir.
23 Lorsque l'affaire fut examinée et qu'elle fut reconnue exacte, ils furent tous deux pendus à un gibet, et cela fut écrit dans le livre des chroniques en présence du roi.
