Ecclésiaste 12
1 Souviens-toi aussi de ton Créateur aux jours de ta jeunesse, avant que les mauvais jours arrivent et que les années s'approchent, quand tu diras: « Je n'ai aucun plaisir à les voir ».
But remember also thy Creator in the days of thy youthful vigor, while the evil days are not yet come, nor those years draw nigh of which thou wilt say, I have no pleasure in them;
2 Avant que le soleil, la lumière, la lune et les étoiles ne soient obscurcis, et les nuages reviennent après la pluie;
While the sun, and the light, and the moon, and the stars, are not yet darkened, and the clouds return not again after the rain;
3 au jour où les gardiens de la maison trembleront, et les hommes forts s'inclineront, et les broyeurs cessent parce qu'ils sont peu nombreux, et ceux qui regardent par les fenêtres sont assombris,
On the day when the watchmen of the house will tremble and the men of might will bend themselves, and the grinders stand idle, because they are become few, and those be darkened that look through the windows;
4 et les portes doivent être fermées dans la rue; quand le bruit du broyage est faible, et l'un d'eux se lèvera à la voix d'un oiseau, et toutes les filles de la musique seront humiliées;
And when the two doors on the streets will be locked, while the sound of the mill becometh dull, and man riseth up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of song are brought low;
5 oui, ils auront peur des hauteurs, et les terreurs seront sur le chemin; et l'amandier fleurira, et la sauterelle sera un fardeau, et le désir s'éteindra; parce que l'homme va dans sa maison éternelle, et les personnes en deuil vont dans les rues;
Also when men will be afraid of every elevation, and are terrified on every way, and the almond-tree will refuse [its blossom], and the locust will drag itself slowly along, and the desire will gainsay compliance; because man goeth to his eternal home, and the mourners go about the streets;
6 avant que le cordon d'argent ne soit coupé, ou le bol d'or est cassé, ou le lanceur est cassé au niveau du ressort, ou la roue cassée à la citerne,
While the silver cord is not yet torn loose, and the golden bowl is not crushed, and the pitcher is not broken at the fountain, and the wheel is not crushed at the cistern;
7 et la poussière retourne à la terre comme elle était, et l'esprit retourne à Dieu qui l'a donné.
When the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return unto God who gave it.—
8 « Vanité des vanités », dit le prédicateur. « Tout est vanité! »
Vanity of vanities, saith Koheleth: all is vanity.—
9 De plus, parce que le prédicateur était sage, il enseignait encore la connaissance au peuple. Oui, il a médité, recherché et mis en ordre de nombreux proverbes.
And in addition to this that Koheleth was wise, he continually also taught the people knowledge, and he probed, and searched out, and composed many proverbs.
10 Le prédicateur s'efforçait de trouver des paroles agréables, des écrits irréprochables, des paroles de vérité.
Koheleth sought to find out acceptable words, and that which would be written down uprightly, even words of truth.
11 Les paroles des sages sont comme des aiguillons, et comme des clous bien fixés, les paroles des maîtres d'assemblée, qui sont données par un seul berger.
The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails fastened [are the words of] the men of the assemblies, which are given by one shepherd.
12 Sois donc averti, mon fils: on n'en finit pas de faire beaucoup de livres, et beaucoup d'étude est une fatigue pour la chair.
But more than all these, my son, take warning for thyself: the making of many books would have no end; and much preaching is a weariness of the flesh.
13 C'est la fin de l'affaire. Tout a été entendu. Craignez Dieu et gardez ses commandements, car c'est là tout le devoir de l'homme.
The end of the matter is, let us hear the whole: Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole [duty of] man.
14 Car Dieu mettra en jugement toute œuvre, toute chose cachée, soit bonne, soit mauvaise.
For every deed will God bring into the judgment concerning every thing that hath been hidden, whether it be good, or whether it be bad.
