Deutéronome 9
1 Écoute, Israël! Tu vas aujourd'hui passer le Jourdain, pour aller déposséder des nations plus grandes et plus puissantes que toi, des villes grandes et fortifiées jusqu'au ciel,
Heare O Israel, Thou shalt passe ouer Iorden this day, to goe in and to possesse nations greater and mightier then thy selfe, and cities great and walled vp to heauen,
2 un peuple grand et haut, les fils des Anakim, que tu connais et dont tu as entendu dire: « Qui peut tenir devant les fils d'Anak? ».
A people great and tall, euen the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak?
3 Sache donc aujourd'hui que Yahvé ton Dieu est celui qui passe devant toi comme un feu dévorant. Il les détruira et les fera tomber devant toi. Tu les chasseras et tu les feras périr rapidement, comme Yahvé te l'a dit.
Vnderstand therefore that this day ye Lord thy God is he which goeth ouer before thee as a consuming fire: he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them downe before thy face: so thou shalt cast them out and destroy them suddenly, as the Lord hath said vnto thee.
4 Ne dis pas dans ton cœur, après que Yahvé ton Dieu les aura chassés devant toi: « C'est à cause de ma justice que Yahvé m'a fait entrer en possession de ce pays »; car Yahvé les chasse devant toi à cause de la méchanceté de ces nations.
Speake not thou in thine heart (after that the Lord thy God hath cast them out before thee) saying, For my righteousnesse the Lord hath brought me in, to possesse this land: but for the wickednesse of these nations the Lord hath cast them out before thee.
5 Ce n'est ni à cause de ta justice, ni à cause de la droiture de ton cœur que tu entres en possession de ce pays; mais c'est à cause de la méchanceté de ces nations que Yahvé ton Dieu les chasse devant toi, afin d'accomplir la parole que Yahvé a jurée à tes pères, à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob.
For thou entrest not to inherite their lande for thy righteousnesse, or for thy vpright heart: but for the wickednesse of those nations, the Lord thy God doth cast them out before thee, and that he might performe the worde which the Lord thy God sware vnto thy fathers, Abraham, Izhak, and Iacob.
6 Sache donc que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, ne te donne pas ce bon pays à posséder pour ta justice, car tu es un peuple à la nuque raide.
Vnderstand therefore, that ye Lord thy God giueth thee not this good land to possesse it for thy righteousnes: for thou art a stifnecked people.
7 Souviens-toi, et n'oublie pas, comment tu as provoqué la colère de Yahvé ton Dieu dans le désert. Depuis le jour où tu as quitté le pays d'Égypte jusqu'à ce que tu sois arrivé en ce lieu, tu as été rebelle à Yahvé.
Remember, and forget not, howe thou prouokedst the Lord thy God to anger in the wildernesse: since the day that thou diddest depart out of the land of Egypt, vntill ye came vnto this place ye haue rebelled against the Lord.
8 A Horeb aussi, tu as provoqué la colère de Yahvé, et Yahvé s'est mis en colère contre toi pour te détruire.
Also in Horeb ye prouoked the Lord to anger so that the Lord was wroth with you, euen to destroy you.
9 Lorsque je suis monté sur la montagne pour recevoir les tables de pierre, les tables de l'alliance que Yahvé a conclue avec vous, je suis resté sur la montagne quarante jours et quarante nuits. Je n'ai ni mangé de pain ni bu d'eau.
When I was gone vp into the mount, to receiue the tables of stone, the tables, I say, of the couenant, which the Lord made with you: and I abode in the mount fourtie daies and fourtie nights, and I neither ate bread nor yet dranke water:
10 Yahvé m'a remis les deux tables de pierre écrites du doigt de Dieu. Elles contenaient toutes les paroles que Yahvé a prononcées avec vous sur la montagne, au milieu du feu, le jour de l'assemblée.
Then the Lord deliuered me two tables of stone, written with the finger of God, and in them was conteyned according to all the wordes which the Lord had said vnto you in the mount out of the middes of the fire, in the day of the assemblie.
11 Au bout de quarante jours et quarante nuits, Yahvé me donna les deux tables de pierre, les tables de l'alliance.
And when the fourtie dayes and fourtie nightes were ended, the Lord gaue me the two tables of stone, the tables, I say, of the couenant.
12 Yahvé me dit: « Lève-toi, descends vite d'ici, car ton peuple que tu as fait sortir d'Égypte s'est corrompu. Ils se sont vite détournés de la voie que je leur avais prescrite. Ils se sont fait une image en fonte! »
And the Lord said vnto me, Arise, get thee downe quickly from hence: for thy people which thou hast brought out of Egypt, haue corrupt their wayes: they are soone turned out of the way, which I commanded them: they haue made them a molten image.
13 Yahvé m'a parlé et a dit: « J'ai vu ce peuple, et voici, c'est un peuple à la nuque raide.
Furthermore, the Lord spake vnto me, saying, I haue seene this people, and beholde, it is a stifnecked people.
14 Laisse-moi tranquille, afin que je les détruise et que j'efface leur nom de dessous le ciel; et je ferai de toi une nation plus forte et plus grande qu'eux. »
Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and put out their name from vnder heaue, and I wil make of thee a mightie nation, and greater then they be.
15 Et je me suis retourné et je suis descendu de la montagne, et la montagne brûlait de feu. Les deux tables de l'alliance étaient dans mes deux mains.
So I returned, and came downe from the Mount (and the Mount burnt with fire, and ye two Tables of the couenant were in my two handes)
16 Je regardai, et voici, vous aviez péché contre Yahvé votre Dieu. Vous vous étiez fait un veau façonné. Vous vous étiez détournés rapidement de la voie que l'Éternel vous avait prescrite.
Then I looked, and beholde, ye had sinned against the Lord your God: for ye had made you a molten calfe, and had turned quickly out of the way which the Lord had commanded you.
17 Je saisis les deux tables, je les jetai de mes deux mains et je les brisai sous vos yeux.
Therefore I tooke the two Tables, and cast them out of my two handes, and brake them before your eyes.
18 Je me suis prosterné devant l'Éternel, comme au début, pendant quarante jours et quarante nuits. Je n'ai ni mangé de pain ni bu d'eau, à cause de tout le péché que vous avez commis, en faisant ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, pour l'irriter.
And I fell downe before the Lord, fourtie dayes, and fourtie nightes, as before: I neither ate bread nor dranke water, because of al your sinnes, which ye had committed, in doing wickedly in the sight of the Lord, in that ye prouoked him vnto wrath.
19 Car j'ai eu peur de la colère et du vif déplaisir avec lesquels Yahvé s'est mis en colère contre vous pour vous détruire. Mais cette fois-là aussi, l'Éternel m'a écouté.
(For I was afraide of the wrath and indignation, wherewith the Lord was mooued against you, euen to destroy you) yet the Lord heard me at that time also.
20 Yahvé s'est mis en colère contre Aaron au point de le détruire. En même temps, j'ai prié pour Aaron.
Likewise ye Lord was very angrie with Aaron, euen to destroy him: but at that time I prayed also for Aaron.
21 J'ai pris ton péché, le veau que tu avais fait, je l'ai brûlé au feu et je l'ai écrasé en le broyant très fin, jusqu'à ce qu'il soit aussi fin que de la poussière. J'ai jeté sa poussière dans le ruisseau qui descendait de la montagne.
And I tooke your sinne, I meane the calfe which ye had made, and burnt him with fire, and stamped him and ground him small, euen vnto very dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the riuer, that descended out of the mount.
22 A Tabérah, à Massa et à Kibroth Hattaava, vous avez provoqué la colère de l'Éternel.
Also in Taberah, and in Massah and in Kibrothhattaauah ye prouoked ye Lord to anger.
23 Lorsque l'Éternel vous envoya de Kadès-Barnéa, en disant: « Montez et prenez possession du pays que je vous donne », vous vous êtes rebellés contre le commandement de l'Éternel, votre Dieu, et vous n'avez pas cru en lui ni écouté sa voix.
Likewise when the Lord sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Goe vp, and possesse the land which I haue giuen you, then ye rebelled against the commandement of the Lord your God, and beleeued him not, nor hearkened vnto his voyce.
24 Tu t'es rebellé contre Yahvé depuis le jour où je t'ai connu.
Ye haue bene rebellious vnto the Lord, since the day that I knewe you.
25 Je me suis donc prosterné devant l'Éternel pendant les quarante jours et les quarante nuits où je me suis prosterné, parce que l'Éternel avait dit qu'il te détruirait.
Then I fell downe before ye Lord fourtie dayes and fourtie nightes, as I fell downe before, because ye Lord had said, that he woulde destroy you.
26 J'ai prié Yahvé et j'ai dit: « Seigneur Yahvé, ne détruis pas ton peuple et ton héritage que tu as rachetés par ta grandeur, que tu as fait sortir d'Égypte à main forte.
And I prayed vnto the Lord, and saide, O Lord God, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatnesse, whom thou hast brought out of Egypt by a mightie hand.
27 Souviens-toi de tes serviteurs, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob. Ne regarde pas l'obstination de ce peuple, ni sa méchanceté, ni son péché,
Remember thy seruants Abraham, Izhak, and Iaakob: looke not to ye stubburnes of this people, nor to their wickednes, nor to their sinne,
28 de peur que le pays d'où tu nous as fait sortir ne dise: « Parce que Yahvé n'a pas pu les faire entrer dans le pays qu'il leur avait promis, et parce qu'il les a haïs, il les a fait sortir pour les tuer dans le désert.
Lest the countrey, whence thou broughtest them, say, Because ye Lord was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, or because he hated them, he caried them out, to slay them in the wildernesse.
29 Pourtant, ils sont ton peuple et ton héritage, que tu as fait sortir par ta grande puissance et par ton bras étendu. »
Yet they are thy people, and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out by thy mightie power, and by thy stretched out arme.
